During this short but comprehensive video I share with you helpful tips about how to save and store leaves (and other vegetation) to use in the eco printing studio. I ask is there a best season to gather leaves, discuss several different ways of storing them and then give my top recommendations about which leaves to gather. All in all I cover the things that I would have liked to know myself when I started to eco print! Although I work without traditional powdered mordants using the 'dirty pot' technique all the information I've included is perfectly suitable for those who enjoy working with mordants and/or medium print too. If you'd like to learn more about working with the 'dirty pot' why not check out my video which explains a little about the process? • Eco printing without m...

Thanks for the video! It’s very helpful. What’s the dirty pot for? What else do you put in there?

You’re welcome Dori and I’m glad that you found it helpful! Rather than using traditional mordants (powdered metal salts0 to fix colour on my fabric I choose to work in a very natural manner and use the composition of the pot itself and what I put in it to affect the results. A ‘dirty pot’ is reactive (not glass or stainless steel, they are non-reactive) and the easiest to start with is aluminium. The metal of the pot helps with wash and light fastness of the eco printing and I add a brew of water, vinegar, some vegetation (I only ever use eucalyptus and onion skins for this) and at times rusty metal too. The brew changes colour depending on how much of each I have in the pot at any given time and it always looks dark as the ace of spades! It looks filthy which might explain the expression ‘dirty pot’ but that doesn’t mean that the prints are not crisp and beautiful! Here’s a link to a video which might help you understand the process a little more. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rZt_dKl6q9-mXZ8.html

Hello your work so inspiring . Love it! I have one question: whe I press my leaves they became dry . Then put them in water soak but they isn’t good for rolling - they just fall apart? Thanks

Hi, I love your work and I am trying to learn it. One of the problems I’m facing is sourcing of leaves that are rich in pigmentation like eucalyptus, maple and walnut and other types of leaves . Do you provide that?
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pooja, where exactly do you live? It’s always easy to yearn for what we don’t have access to but I bet there are other leaves in your region that will work well too. Please just let me know where that is and I’ll see if I can make any suggestions! I do provide leaves for workshop participants when they visit me here in Ireland but can’t post any over international borders I’m afraid. It’s very important to be mindful of not transporting diseases in vegetation and obeying all the customs rules.

@@clasheen I'm from India. Are there any ecommerce sites which provide such facility? I think fruits and vegetables are also exported/imported so leaves can too subject to custom duties

@@PoojaYadav-kn7oy Hi again Pooja, you are actually very lucky living in India as you will have access to several fantastic eco printing leaves and it is always better to use local vegetation, not buy it in. I think that you should be able to find rose leaves, casuarina, teak and indeed walnut if you just ask around. Often people have a tree or two in their garden or if they don't have gardens there will be trees in urban areas. Often these are planted in car parks and florists are also good to ask for eucalyptus leaves. They usually are happy to give out free rose leaves as well and then in the kitchen you can use the dry skins from onions and slices of fresh turmeric! Don't make things complicated, experiment with local vegetation and you will get the best results. Good luck! PS Im going to make a short video shortly with information about resources and it will include a list of excellent online groups that you can join and ask questions of members. There are quite a few eco printers in India I think so will probably discover they can suggest more different local leaves.

Aloha Nicola, I live in Hawaii and I would like to pick your brain and see if you can recommend any type of leaves growing in tropical regions that would be workable in the Dirty Pot method. What is the best fabric and process to test these leaves? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo! Thank You!

If you live in Hawaii you should have access to different varieties of eucalyptus but my top pick if you can get any would be teak leaves!!! I believe that they can grow on the islands and while I’ve not used them myself workshop students have had excellent results in the past! For info about fabric etc. my eBook is the best comprehensive guide to working in the ‘dirty pot’, I wrote it because I just don’t have enough hours in the day to answer each question! nicolabrown.ie/shop/new-products/eco-printing-in-the-dirty-pot-ebook/
