I was a caregiver for an elderly woman who had started out farming with her husband probably in the early 50's. She had the most beautiful hands and nails for a woman in her 80's. I commented on how beautiful her hands and nails were. She said, "Thank you. It's probably from all of the cantaloupes I've waxed in all my years of farming." She told me that when they were a young couple and started out farming for profit, they chose cantaloupes as their main crop. After their first couple years of farming, they were losing money. She said the stores would not buy their cantaloupes because the cantaloupes were "too juicy and too sweet". The cantaloupes would not last long in storage, and in the stores because of that. If you ever wonder why you can't find a tasty melon in your grocery stores, that's why. After a few years of taking losses, they bought more land and started growing onions as their main crop. Their family is one of the largest onion farmers, and cold storage, on the West Coast, Callandri Farms. She was an amazing woman. I loved to hear her farming stories of days gone by.

I loved reading this!! Thank you for sharing!! I’m saving seeds from my local farm who is on their 5th generation of farmers in upstate NY. Love hearing stories from the old timers. My FIL grew the very best Swiss Chard and had a massive personal garden. He grew up working in cranberry bogs in Plymouth and was disciplined after attending the Citadel and being a civil engineer. He taught me a lot but even so, my garden will never compare!! Hopefully next season, I will be able to grow some cantelope because I’m saving heirloom ones from the melons I bought home today.

I used this method and saved the seeds for an entire cantaloupe (hundreds) and did a test with 7 of them to see if they'd sprout. 6 of the 7 sprouted! So it's safe to say this method rocks!!

We dry ours on coffee filters. The filters wick away the water and help the seeds dry quickly but the seeds don't stick to the filter paper. It is very easy to pour the dry seeds directly into a storage bottle or bag.

I grew my own cantaloupes this year and I waited until the first one fell off and then collected them. The seeds weren't all falling off, but they were much easier to slide off the melon, compared to store bought.

I just discovered you today as I was looking for a tutorial on saving melon seeds. You produce a perfectly understandable vlog, well spoken and without any confusing or incomplete teachings. I subscribed immediately and look forward to future tutorials from you. One question: Do melon seeds require stratification to become viable?

Already did this a similar way and got tons of seeds from the cantaloupes I eat Your way looks way easier I was putting them in a disposable baking pan after sorting them out by hand I’d spin them around the seeds will clump up and the pulp would co around the edges of the seeds I’d pull the seeds out dump the water and then do this a few times until there was no pulp left I’d leave them in the baking pan to dry in the sun I also tried planting the floaters and some actually sprouted

The juices of the seeds are very flavorful and it heightens the fragrance of the melons, especially if you puree the melons and add the juices of the seeds to the puree and add stevia with some water.

@@judichristopher4604 In CA you can grow them year round, unless you live in the areas that get very frosty and snowing weather, like Lake Tahoe. It would depend on how cold it gets where you live. I actually lived in a desert area of CA, the Antelope Valley, and some winters were too cold, but I noticed they grew them year round in other areas of CA.

pretty close to how I do it. I done store bought, over half the seeds failed the float test, and it took a couple of years to get a good grow percentage rate, but can't even tell now they came from a store cantaloupe. don't recommend trying it though cause farmer market cantaloupe, more variety, more seeds, and higher grow percentage.

Very Helpful video! I just harvested my first cantaloupe, but it was really small. :( Can you make a video about growing watermelons in raised beds? I tried trellising, but it's not working out so well. It would be really helpful if you made a video on the squash vine borer / prevention, and why my corn is turning red and drying out. Thanks!
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 9 жыл бұрын
+bananabugies The corn is turning red because of a lack of phosphorus and nitrogen. Also, corn naturally dies as the season progresses. Watermelons can be grown in raised beds just like the can in ground, make sure to check out my watermelon growing guide to see how.

I've read on the internet the way to save melon seeds is to soak them for four days so they firm it and then the ones that float at the top you throw those out and then you let them dry and then you put them in the freezer for two days and then in the refrigerator until you're ready to plant is that not right?

If the fruit came from south of the border, it may have been radiated before coming through customs. That's not good for the seeds. Most of the melons I've found in our stores are from Guatemala or south of the border. Even when I lived in California, I was discouraged to see that most of the grocery stores' produce came from foreign countries. I lived in the San Joaquin Valley, one of the largest agriculture counties in the country, and CA produce is primarily exported to other countries. I usually passed on foreign produce because I resent buying produce from foreign countries, and ours is being sent elsewhere. I worked in a cherry packing plant in CA, and while there, I found out the best cherries were going to Japan, and other countries.
