What do you guys think of the trc apocalyse? Joe x did destroy it. But I think you should not bang a knife against a metal car post🤨. But would it last longer if it would have been fullconvex like you dbk version apocalypse and as the dbk knife? Me and more people want you opinion because I think Joe x testing is not realistic.(can he also destroy whitout hitting metal and whitout using a gun?) And this way only the soft steels look good like the aus8 of his girfriend(lilly)😂

Regarding number one my most expensive knife is a Winkler Utility 6. It has the most asymmetrical grind of the roughly 50 fixed blades I own. Winkler told me to send it back for a new one but I'm so impressed by the design, toughness and ease of sharpening that I haven't bothered. Another great video.

Unfortunately sometimes it's a cheap rambo-esque knife making politicians crap out panicked laws nobody likes or needs that will only restrict the law abiding people. Look at germany after Mannheim this year, they now want to restrict fixed blades to under 6cm and make double edged knives illegal to own. I know, I am ranting now, but the german market has been dictating the size of fixed blades in the central european market for decades with §42 restricting length to below 12cm so many knives on offer are 11,5cm. I am OK with 11,5cm but now am worried how a 6cm restriction would change things for the rest of us. Will all fixed blades now be 5,5cm max? (most manufacturers make the blade shorter to reduce the chance of a 12cm blade being measured as 12,1cm and cause fines and stuff) There are a ton of petitions around, so if you are german please add your signature on some! Maybe if DBK reads this, they might mention this in an episode.

I agree with you about the size of a hiking knive, that it shall be a small one. Depends on the location where you hike. I am doing a lot of hiking in Romania, where the bear population is the highest in Europe, i think. I allways carry a slightly bigger knive only for this reason, like 13-15 cm long blade. Not that i could defeat a bear and survive, but it makes me a bit more confident. And i'll have slightly more chances with a survival knive than a small bushcraft knive. Or i might be a bit too paranoic:))

Knife laws only effect the people who carry a knife as a tool. Those who use a knife as a weapon will just go to the kitchen drawer & take a knife. Knife laws don't stop knife crime.

While i’m no expert on the matter and it surely differs in cultures and regions, but most likely, knife laws also stop unplanned incidents. People that getting drunk and stupid, or get into fights for any reason is probably a target for these laws. Escalation from a slap on the cheek to something much worse is something lawmakers have in mind, not only psychotic murderers and terrorists.

Here in holland they overregulate everything.. it's silly. A knife is a tool, that's all, and anything can turn into a weapon if someone has bad intentions. Honest nature and human loving bushcrafters and people that use those tools should not fall under those rules, that simple. I say no to that law, they should listen to WE The People. But all laws are actually vague and open for interpretation here.. as they see fit. The words should not be differently interpreted as stated. The same like the 2nd amendement in the USA, read carefully its words.. its written very clear and smart. They gonna try to ban lighters next because it can cause a fire?! lol!!! oh wait, they are already taking the fuel away.. damn. It's just madness, and only a fool would take heed to these dictatorial rules that have nothing to do with reality. We The people Govern Ourselves!

@@svzgditeam5919 Knife laws in Sweden are similar. But you know, there’s both pros and cons with laws open for interpretation. The big issue with the rockstead isn't the hardness (although that doesn't help it), it's the steel. Zdp-189 is a poorly designed steel whose only real strength is sharpenability vs edge retention. It relies purely on a stupid amount of carbon and chromium for it's abrasiom resistance instead of using fewer much harder carbides (like vanadium or niobium). This high concentration of relatively course carbides means the toughness is horrible and, even with 20% chromium, it has poor stainlessness. Steels like k390, 10v, or vanadis 8 are steels that have the same edge retention while having much higher toughness.

G'day guys, up front, not hating at all, great channel and agree with much of what you said on this one, especially on the point of particular environmental considerations. However; on the general question of "survival". Mark Young made a great comment earlier in the year, and I paraphrase "it's more like unplanned camping" yes indeed, particularly for the experienced and assuming you're not separated from your kit. Real survival though, requiters a better than decent shelter, maybe from scratch and I'd suggest "big fire" as the highest of priorities. Dont care what Ray Mears or anyone else says, you dont wanna do that with a 6 incher or less, yes it can be done and fill your boots, but it's only a back up option I reckon, so get fair dinkum you blokes, big fellas rule in that respect !!!!!! ...... and very often at reasonable prices too. Cheers Duke. P.S. the K-Bar fighting knife; ? fantastic piece of history if you have an original, ....... but really, a mass produced, cheap and nasty, piece of sh*t IMO, ...... better off using a bayonet I reckon ; )

Good advice on starting with a Mora, Rokka or something in between like an easy scandi Condor Terrasaur. Started camping at 10, got a foldable steel EKA scandivex grind, still use it. Only 40 yrs later I bought myself a 🇭🇷 custom Malanika, because of this channel 🤙. Bushcrafter in CPM Cruwear and Desert Ironwood. My precious. (The sheath, over time, does need extra stitches or rivets to keep the knife tight...) Precious but I'll smash it when batonning though, it's used, when camping/wood fire prep, it's not a 'display knife'. I'd probably bitch and moan for a month, if I'd ever chip a Rockstead, so it would be 'display only'. Not my cup of tea.

Here in Finland knife laws are not so hard, at least not yet. I don't remember the exact words, but you can carry knife of any size as long as you have a reason for it. I carry puukko openly on my work clothes, because I use it in many tasks as a maintanence guy. But self defence isnt a valid reason here, because there really is no need for that. There are only few places in biggest cities where you could get in trouble at night time. But those are allso the places where you should not carry (openly), because that will draw attension of both criminals and police. So, I wouldn't carry openly in biggest cities, but everywhere else - no one cares or says anything as long as you behave.

Hi guys! You raised an extremely interesting topic 👌🏻. From my experience, I know that we often choose knives that are too large. I personally made such a mistake. In my opinion, they are more useful in the home garden than in the field. Apart from the fact that they are heavy and not very comfortable to carry, they make you aware that you can build a house thanks to the possibility of batoning large pieces of wood. but when going to the forest, the question is: where the hell can I find such large pieces of wood??? …. Of course, we can prepare them ourselves using an ax or saw. But if we are going to carry a saw or an axe, why do we need a large, heavy knife? To sum up, in my opinion a compact beast (e.g. FV F1… or BR Aurora, TRC DBK…) is sufficient in the field. The second option is: a saw and a small knife with a high level of edge retention. In other words, there's not much area to effectively use large knives in practice, although some are awesome. Best regards to all!💪🏻🔪

For those getting into bushcraft: You won't get a better knife than the Mora Bushcraft Black or even the Mora Robust, just because tou payed way more. I still haven't found a knife ,that feathersticks easier and carves better,than the knives from Mora, aka Morakniv. They are also a dream to reprofile or even learn how to sharpen a knife. Those are the best, even for that! Their sheaths, are the most practical, because you don't have to clean the blade everytime you sheath the knife, thing that is most welcome, when collecting wild edibles! THey are also THE sharpest knives out there,which means, that both the heat treatment and the geometries, are spot on! For a bushcraft, a proper slightly convexed, scandi grind, on a blade that won't be thicker than 3 mm or much longer than 4 inches (9cm to 12cm maximum). and an ergonomic thick handle, is all you need.Hope this helps beginners, Happy new Year!!

In Germany the knife laws also became harder (§42a). It's so ridiculous. The harder the law became, the more knife attacking idiots are outside. I was playing with knives since I was a kid, and my friends did so. No one cared about it. And we are well and nice behaving people😊. The law for punishing those knife-attackers otherwise didn't get harder. Why not? I would put them into jail for min. 5 years. If they kill someone, I'd never let them out again. But in Germany you'll get out sometimes, after 15 years (so called lebenslänglich / lifelong arrest😂) even for a murder. Only when the judge says: lebenslänglich mit anschließender Sicherheitsverwahrung, (sorry cannot translate that correct) then they keep you inside prison forever! For me a knife is a tool. Different knives for different work, that's it. Nice video like always. Oh, by the way...who was that woman with the nice voice on mistake 1 and 4?😘

You so nailed this one, thank you! If one is buying a knife just because they love the design - than everything goes (I got TOPS Knives Earth Skills just for that reason), but if one is looking for a user, then going 'back to basics' is the best way - and only go 'up' once you really understand what works for you. One of the first knives I ever got was Iiisaki Aito - and while I don't use it often these days - every time I need to do some wood working - it is the knife I grab even though I have some more fancy ones (but obviously don't have the DBK bushcrafter yet - that is to be fixed eventually).

I'm buying myself a BRK Cub EDC for Christmas. It's a smaller version of the original Cub design. I've not found a lot of info on the knife, but it seems to fit my needs. The handle is a full size and the blade is short (98mm) and thin (3mm) in 3V.

No we can't, be cautious, read the laws. There are a lot of strange knife laws in the US and Kentucky. People assume what you said because a lot of guns are legal to own and carry.
@ironman2326
@ironman2326 7 ай бұрын
@@VitalyMack I can't find any that are illegal. You can open carry basically any fixed blade, even a sword. You used to not be able to conceal carry unless you had a permit but now you no longer need that unless you are going to conceal carry to another state that permits KY conceal carry licenses. If you know of a specific knife that is illegal to carry, please let me know, but any folder, regardless of blade length is legal to my understanding. Obviously you can't take them into certain buildings, but I'm speaking generally.

@ironman2326 just checked, looks like some of the restrictions have been lifted. Butterfly knives were used to be considered deadly weapons, OTFs, switchblade, etc. But yeah, most states and municipalities have special restrictions on knives that would surprise you. Well that's good then. I had a friend get into some legal problems because he pulled out a butterfly knife from a concealed position, to cut something. We were all rather shocked...of you know knives, you'll know that you are more likely to hurt yourself with a butterfly knife, lol

@@ironman2326 looks good. I see that it's made in Tiwan, which is good. Though I didn't see any steel specs. Let me know. I just came back from a month long hunting trip, got to use the BK2. It is a very good knive, amd you can grab it right by the tip and do more precise cuts as well. Overall, I felt that during a backwoods hunting trip, it was a bit to heavy. So I'm going to try a smaller bushcraft knife next with a light saw. I actually prefer light saws for my fire needs. Though, the Becker BK2 is comforting in the woods, very sturdy, and you can really use that thing for self defence if needed.

Not everybody. You made and make these mistakes and possibly your followers who trust your judgement. There are very few new designs. It's usually variations on existing designs like your Bushcrafter. The Tracker is a new design, just a bad design. I agree on that one. IMO there are no survival knives or bushcraft knives. Just knives. In locations where I travel my machete is often the knife most used for bushcraft tasks. Military knives are very often bad knives. They are often cheaply produced knives and in bulk so the production cost is usually very low. An exception is often found in Scandinavia. I agree on the EDC part where really all you need or can take is a simple (non locking) SAK. So it seems like you are finally getting what I was telling you all this time?
