I always thought that people with huge video game collections just had a ton of excess money they were willing to spend to get everything they wanted. But then I learned the unfortunate truth that the key is actually buying not only games you want, but also games you want to sell (assuming you can buy them cheap enough) and using that profit to buy more games. Keep the stuff you want, sell the rest, and eventually you'll have a big collection of games.

My advice is to consider buying games with label damage, loose discs or otherwise not in your preferred condition. You may come across a copy in better condition for a deal, but if not, you still have the game to play

I go to many conventions. I happened to run into the same reseller booth three cons in a row and always purchased something and talked passionately about games with them. Also, follow them on social media and comment on their stuff, etc. They always hook me up with deals and discounts, and they know I have a weak spot for guide books. I ordered something from their online shop a while back, and they decided to throw a guide book in there for free because they know how much I love them.

Patience is key! Even today I find great deals (people making pricing mistakes, for example). They just don't come along as often as before. It also pays to get close to a private seller (repeat customer; good faith negotiations). I get great deals that way.

I just inherited my brother-in-law’s jungle green N64, a bunch of games, my wife’s childhood NES and SEGA Genesis all with games. I DID have to hound them for years to get them...but they now have a safe home!

The mini consoles have been great for this. I know some people don't count them because it's emulation but what a great way to get so many excellent games for such a low price. Many of them work out to 2 to 4 bucks per game and that ignores that you're getting the console and controller(s).

There is one more way, one that I tend to practice often, but it's no picnic... Buying loose games that are in rough shape. Since loose games surly are much cheaper than buying games that are complete are clearly stated here in this video one thing that I feel has to be mentioned is buying games in rough or bad shape since this is really a great way to save some dough! You know the ones, writing on the cartridge, that missing label, or that one copy of Tetris that for some reason turned yellow. Yeah... Those ones. If you already have the tools and chemical agents along with the know-how you can turn the hands of time on these games and make them look like new again! It may take time and you may want to decide that first you want the game but maybe you want to restore it later but you can still get that like new look if you are open to restoration. I bought all the original Game Boy Pokemon games for a little over a hundred dollars and they looked terrible but were original and were completely serviceable. They are clean, they have new repro labels that match the originals closely, and all the batteries were replaced by purchasing a cheap soldering iron and a bulk pack of batteries which don't cost more than like ten bucks that you can stretch for each game that runs on them. All you really need at this point is time my friends and then you will be gaming like the big dogs who spend the big bucks for clean carts and labels and no one will know the difference. *This is the story of why I paid someone to take a NES cartridge from me.* My name is Chris. and in 2003 one Sunday in Ohio, I went to a flea market with some friends. I figured I could find some video games. I didn't find too much. Just a few Atari 2600 games, and a Sega Genesis model 2 with no games. On our way back home, we spotted a neighborhood that was having a garage sale day. So we stopped at the few places that weren't selling baby clothes. At one house that didn't even have a garage this old guy with glasses was selling all kinds of crap. I asked him if he had any video games and he replied: "No." ... "I mean Yes." "I have a box down in the basement." After what felt like 15 minutes he returned with a large torn and water damaged box that was collapsing on itself. Inside the box was a spaghetti pile of mixed controllers for a few systems. A couple 3-button Sega Genesis controllers, a few Atari 5200 games Millipede/ Zaxxon/and Ms Pacman, a Recoton 4 button turbo pad for the NES, 4 Atari joysticks, a Sega Master System game Alex Kidd, a Turbo Grafx 16 card Keith Courage in the Alpha Zones, a broken Gameboy DMG, Altered Beast for the Genesis, and 3 copies of Super Mario Bros for NES. But at the bottom of the box was something weird. Unlike anything I have seen before. It looked like a Nintendo cartridge but way taller. I couldn't reach it because of all the dang controller cables in the way. I asked him how much for the Recoton NES controller and the Keith Courage Turbo Card. He replied: "Fifty bucks for the whole box." Thinking about his offer, I realized that most of the box's contents was not worth the price he was asking. But still wondering what else could be in this box, and what was that weird cartridge. I agreed to take a gamble. I paid the man for the box, and my friend bought an old lamp and a pair of gloves. I shoved the box into the trunk of my friend Paul's Honda Accord and we left towards the house across the street. Paul's girlfriend Sarah seen some Goped scooters on their lawn and was pretty excited. When I got home I carried the fairly heavy box upstairs and into my bedroom. I was alone. I set the box on the floor and began digging stuff out. I grappled with the spaghetti pile of controllers lifting it partially from the box and tossing it onto the floor. Finally, I could see what else was in there. A PS1 memory card, Tetris for Gameboy, and there it was... The tall cartridge. It looked just like a NES cartridge but taller and heavier. The grey plastic was lighter in color than a normal game. It didn't have any artwork, or an official label. It just had a white sticker with faded and illegible handwriting on it. I couldn't tell what it said, but managed to read some numbers: _1987_ Looked like it was a prototype of some sort. It would not fit into my NES, and I didn't own a top loader. So I disassembled my Nintendo and took off the top of it's plastic shell. "Now we're in business!" I exclaimed. The cartridge now fit. I hooked up my Nintendo to my 19 inch RCA CRT TV, and turned on the TV. I plugged in my new Recoton Turbo controller after wiping it down with a sanitizer wipe. I pressed the power button on my NES. Nothing. The red power light was flashing on and off on the console. I took out the cartridge and blew like a hurricane in July. It was less dusty now, but still dirty. I went to the bathroom and retrieved a few cotton swabs and some 70% isopropyl alcohol. Upon cleaning the PCB's contacts a bunch of grey and green gunk came off. After letting it dry for a few minutes, I put the game back into the system. I pressed the power button. *Game Start* in bright red letters shown on the television. What? No game title? Then a black screen. Oh, it's probably loading... Nothing happens. Oh, it probably crashed. I then reached forward to turn off the console. Before I could reach the button, it happened... I felt fuzzy and tingling all over my body, almost like being electrocuted. My stretched out hand disappeared in front of my very eyes. I felt my whole body disintegrate into millions of small pieces. I felt like a human fog. A man made of mist. Then before I could come to any realization of what was really happening, I awoke to a new reality. Everything I saw was thin. The sky was thin. There was no sun or clouds. Light was emanating from everywhere and everything at once. The ground was flat without undulations. The trees were thin. Then I saw my arms and legs were also thin. I then walked slightly to the left. and I saw it finally... As I began to walk, I saw the world grow in whatever direction I went. New trees, new houses and new people sprung into existence. When I walked backwards they disappeared. It was at that moment I had realized I was inside of the video game! When I move in 2 directions, forward or backwards, I can see the world. When I turn to the left or right, the whole dang world disappeared. Was I really inside of a video game? How could this be real? How?! Then I heard it... A sound that would curdle your soul. A snort, a sneeze, and a fart all rolled together. I looked behind me and saw a hairy man with a pig face dressed in royal armor. He was slowly coming at me with a sword. I didn't know how to defend myself. I backed away, not knowing what I would do. Needing an escape from certain doom, I clamoured at my body. Do I have any equipment or inventory, I thought? Reaching out to my hip, I felt it... A golden sword in a leather sheath! I unbuttoned the holding strap, and drew my sword. Holding it upwards to the cloudless sky. I exclaimed: "I shall not fall into the hands of evil. Away foul beast!" Thrusting my sword forward as I leaped towards the pig faced soldier. "Guards!" , he cried in a shrieking voice. "Intruder !" he garbled out, as he turned around slightly. I changed my direction, and made a run for the huge wall surrounding the garden area we were in. Behind me I hear more shrieking voices, unable to understand what they were saying. Running as fast as I could, I realized that I had the energy of a hundred men. I didn't feel out of breath at all. Upon reaching the gargantuan brick wall, I see a castle in the distance. I frantically search for a door or anything to make my escape. Then I felt something strike me in the head. As I collapse to the ground in pain, I begin to loose consciousness. In my fading sight I see a face of a beautiful princess dressed in a purple hooded robe. I awoke in a dark chamber room lit by candlelight. The flames seamed to repeat in a pattern. I tried to sit up and then a voice spoke from the shadows. "You're finally awake." A young lady steps forward out of the darkness. "Who are you?", she said. I sat up on what I realized now was a large canopy bed. "I am Chris", I replied. "Uknown Error", she blurted out. I then said, "I am Player 1." She begins to say, "I am Princess Nin of the kingdom Tendo. The wise men of council prophesized of your arrival many generations ago. Are you willing to save this world from the evil darkness that has befallen our land?" "Yes or No?" I asked her, "What darkness?" She replied, "Yes or No?" "••ck", I said. She replied, "Yes or No?" I took a long moment before answering. "Yes!", I forcefully yelled. She began to speak again, "Your journey is dangerous, please take this with you." A lantern materialized before our eyes. I reached forward taking the lantern and held it up high over my head. A melody began to play briefly before fading away. "You will need this too", she spoke. Just then a golden sword beamed into existence in front of me. I clutched the sword tightly and held it high above me. The same melody played again. "Good luck on your quest, brave soul. Only you can save our kingdom from the evil that has engulfed this world." "Missing Text...", she cried. I said, "What?" "Missing Text...", she cried again. Before I could realize what to do next, I blinked my eyes. When I opened them again I was in my room, with familiar sights. Looking up at the ceiling fan and the posters on my wall. I was laying on the floor of my room, wondering if I had been dreaming. Did I pass out? Was that a dream? Was the Kingdom of Tendo still in trouble? I picked myself off of the floor and looked over at my disassembled NES. That weird cartridge was still hanging out of it. I borrowed my Mom's car, and brought the game to my local thrift store. "I have a donation", I told the clerk. "Sorry, no video games", she said. I pulled out a twenty dollar bill from my pocket and slid it across the counter. "I had two donations, I guess." She smiled and said, "toss it in the bin over there", as she pointed to the back of the store. I walked over and dropped in the cartridge. It fell to the bottom of the bin, mixed in with random things. I left the store, and went home. Another solid vid man. I was gifted some really nice games last year b/c people know I'm into collecting. A tip I'll offer is get to know local game shop owners. It's always cool to have another friend into the same stuff you are (gaming and the stuff that overlaps it) and often they'll give you a heads up on inventory or maybe even better pricing. Plus they're often just really cool people.

My advice would be finding a Retro Store, here in Alaska I have Ian's Game Paradise. I look at the store 1st for a video game that I want & if it is not there I go online. Any game I purchase online that I do not like I give it to him for resale. As it's a game he does not have (at least for sale at his store) so he is happy to take it & then I get store credit & boom your next retro video game at his store is way cheaper. It's a win win for both of us.

This video is so true, I recently paid $220 Australian for 2 megadrives and 19 games from a guy who wanted to move on his old collection. After selling off the games I didn't want and both the megadrives I ended up with Ghouls and ghosts, Alissa dragoon, atomic runner, sonic 2, truxton, rocket knight , X men, sonic and knuckles, blades of vengence and streets of rage 3!! For $0!! All boxed with instructions apart from blades of vergence. Buying collections is the way to go

I once found a working Turbo-grafx 16 in the hard case along with 12 complete games including bonk 1 and 2 sitting out by the curb 7 years or so ago.

I mix it up. I have a Retron 5 and a Retro Freak. Roms on SD cards, cool. When I can get a physical copy, score, check that one off my list of "Elitist Phallus Blockers".

It might be controversial (not a collector anymore myself) but a mindset is to realize that if you are not willing to have this game to actually play it again, you are not throwing it in the trash by selling it, allowing someone else to experience it + get some of your money back to afford new gaming experiences is a win-win. I mean, some people are arguing "but this is the best ... of them all, i HAVE to own it" but if this is not your childhood game and you dont plan to re-play it in the future, you are not offending the creators or the quality of the game itself by parting with it.

Hi Retro Bird. Those were some great tips about saving. My problem is that I never, ever get rid of anything, and what I do buy stays in the museum's collection. Needless to say, I never buy duplicates and I have definitely never bought duplicates to sell either. That is just something that I sought to do for the museum, because I thought it was a better way overall for the collection. I know everyone else does trade and sell, and that is fine, but I've always wanted mine to be free from doing so. With over 11,500 games, it has worked out pretty well!

I made friends with a guy who worked at Gamestop. We didn't hang out socially, but he would cut me deals and even call me or special order stuff I was looking for. I'm sure it was business to an extent, but he did go out of his way because I was a regular customer, was polite, and generally knew what I wanted. That probably won't work at every GS, but it's a good rule of thumb. Also, buy in bulk. By that I mean if you make a fairly decent sized purchase, a retailer might throw in a free game or something because they know you collect and you'll be back. I used to clean up buying loose Nes carts because I was there every week. It's sort of like collecting comics. You have your pull list every month, but reliable customers might get a tip off or a freebie or whatever. What I cannot stress enough is be friendly and be ready to have a conversation. I know it sounds cynical, but you need to be a person, not just another wallet. At say a garage sale, pet the dog, compliment the lawn, whatever, and you can usually get a discount. Or make a friend or connection that makes you stick out.

5:54 Years ago, I was looking for a notebook-styled GBA cart case that used to be on the market called the Nintendo Ultimate Game Library. Each case holds 32 games. You could buy them new at Walmart for $30 all day long. Fast forward a few years and you couldn’t find them at all. I had one but wanted a second one as my collection grew. Got on eBay and found one. I bid. Another guy bid. I bid again. Then I think he got mad and went after me trying to drive the cost up-not knowing that I was Mr. Moneybags. He finally walked away and I ended up paying $70 for that case. I don’t regret it because that was over 10 years ago and I’ve never seen another one for sale since then. I need a 3rd one.

These are all great tips! I think the best way to go is if your family or friend has games or a game console they don't play anymore or a broken console you can fix. I got my wii for free doing this.

One thing to consider is emulation. I definitely want to own physical copies of my games, but with many games, that is almost an impossibility due to the rarity of a title, the outrageous price (Jack Bros. for Virtual Boy), or the language barrier for a number of Japanese exclusive RPGs (Bahamut Lagoon for Super Famicom). For these elusive titles, emulation is a viable option. The legalities can be iffy, but it is a way to play great titles you might not, otherwise, have access to. Another option to consider is possibly buying a whole new system to play games released on it that didn’t have that game available on its original platform. Persona 2: Innocent Sin was a PS1 release made only for Japan for the longest time. Eventually, it was made available for sale for the PSP here in the States. While that particular example may not be cost effective today, it was a cheaper option when the game first released. Say you have a Neo Geo AES. If you want a cheaper way to play Neo Geo titles, consider the MVS version of the game as it will work for your console, even if it isn’t as pretty if a cartridge as the retail release. There are also R4 carts for DS/3DS and other SD adapters for other consoles. This is similar to the argument for emulation, except the games are played on actual owned hardware. Again, this is a cheap option where the legalities are iffy, but it might be the only way to play some rare titles for those long retired systems.

There are some cheaper alternatives to actual hardware that are closer to the real experience than a PC. For Genesis games, Sega made some great collections for 360, PS3, etc. For Nintendo, you have the Mini systems which are great.

Another great vid, thanks for the tips. I just secured a ton of games since my mom is sending me a tooon of our old games and consoles. Got games like Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 1-2, Kendo Rage, Donkey Kong Country 1-2, etc etc. Can't keep track of it all but looking forward to playing them and taking care of them here. Unfortunately my childhood SNES is beat to crap, and incredibly yellow. Do you have any experience with restoring consoles? What advice could you give me for refurbishing an extremely yellowed SNES that looks like it was left out in the rain? Somehow, it does still work.

I look at it like this. All or most games then where $60 each complete. So any thing I see complete under $60 is okay with me. New AAA games today are $80 so if I can find one of the best titles complete from way back when for that or less I'm okay with that. Buying incomplete games I price the value in my head accordingly. If I plan to play the game then the box is less important but if I don't really plan to play it but I am nostalgic for it, like my copy of Paperboy then I'll want it complete so I can display it proudly

also. look in bins when they're outside because games and other tings can lye beneath the surface. and keep a lookout for people who are moving or houses just moved into because you never know what was left behind and thrown out by the new owners. I found 6 n64 games this past December while walking around the block. some were at the bottom of a bin, some were deep in a bag of dolls, but all from the same outside pile. keep an eye out, be thorough, and don't lose hope. I have two rules..I have to play the Game at least once and I have a wish list which helps me Focus on what I want.

One tip I've got is to look for similar, but cheaper games to pick up instead. My example is looking to get Jade Cocoon year back, but instead I bought Breath of Fire 4 & although I haven't played it quite yet (going to soon, just need to clear a few things up) I'm happy with my decision.

The switch has a pretty good Sega Genesis game library for people looking to play a bunch of favorites for the console.

I have looked at collecting for the 3DS as I feel from 2019 to now you can get some great bargains and they have some quality exclusives. However, my collection is small but I am happy for it since 1. It's games that have some monetary value and potentially may go up in value. I kinda get a kick off that I wont lie 2. They are games I actually want to play I have a small collection of gems that may not be the most valuable, but they are games I can cherish as I play as they are fun. Furthermore, I do give these games to my son on Xmas or his birthday and want him to have a somewhat limited amount to appreciate what he has.

I'm starting to save money by playing through my backlog and adding games I never plan on touching again to my sell box.

Trading works like a champ too. Find a good game thrifting (or however cheap method you want) then trade that game for one that you do want of the same value.

I prefer to have the original console and controllers with ODEs or multicarts. I just want to play the games.

I do heaps of research before deciding what to buy. I buy original wherever possible but I emulate when I find the price is too much.

My nursing supervisor gave me a once played Wii with all the doo dads. It is now sitting by my original Wii on deck for when it stops working but I'm pretty sure it will function long after I stop.

Also don't forget sega mobile apps. You can play the three shining or the phantasy star games ad free for $5. The touch screen is not ideal for action but works great for rpgs and strategy games. Also the easiest way to play phantasy star 4 which is a banger.

Another necessary evil (especially for those buying video games on a budget) is buying pirated/bootlegged/unlicensed versions of said video games and game console clones online, especially if it's from AliExpress or the like...

When people say they can't find a game, I assume they are talking about physical locations. You can find any game online, so I don't mind buying on ebay or an online store if the game can't be found anywhere else. I've even seen rare systems on ebay. I have about 120 physical copies of games, and most of them were free. They were given by family and neighbors. I also won 2 games from a KZfaqr.

One time, when I was living in Toronto, there was a box full of super Nintendo stuff just sitting there in the building I lived in. It was on the bench in the street-to-building air lock. Unfortunately, I was drunk as a skunk and instead of taking the whole box, I just took the Super Multi-Tap. Of course, it was gone the next... time I looked. Remember, kids, alcohol makes you temporarily stupid! And if you drink enough, permanently stupid. This story happened in 2006.

I know that i cant play all games that i would love to buy (time problem). So what i do is that i only buy games that i am able to play in the time that i have. The rest of the money that i dont spend on games i will put on a place where it can work for me in the time that i am playing the games i bought. So in the long term i can actually buy more games and i keep my backlog to the minimum. Currently on the hunt for an old CRT tv. Untill i have that i wont buy any new games, unless it has to be a really sweet deal.

As mean as I may sound, the only true way to me as to getting enough money to buy retro games is to ask your boss if you can work overtime. I would like to as I want Super Mario 64 first print with the box, manual and papers as well as the cartridge, all in either mint or near mint condition. Unfortunately for me, I am going to have to sacrifice lots of time in order to get what I want. It's that plain simple!

i have been collecting for awhile now and its been mostly thrift stores and pawn shops yard sales and all that and honestly i have had people make fun of me for playing older games and not really playing the new ones i mean yes i have a ps4 and Xbox one sure i play games on there but i don't care about graphics and looks if they game is fun its a good game like i still go back to playing games when i grew up cause they are a blast such as oddworld strangers wraith and grabbed by the ghoulies because to me older games still hold up and there all fun (not sonic 2006 lol im joking) but i also own a lot of dumb games that no one would want hell i have Britney's Dance Beat but all in thanks for reading if you did im sure not many people will lol

3:20 I would get robbed before the light of day leaves lol. In my case I'm happy with the Everdrive 64 X7. Not only because of the games and hackroms, but also because it allows me to test the roms I develop on N64 hardware instead of using an emulator. Sure, it's pretty expensive [$157 + $42 shipping to Peru], but when comparing with the whole library of N64 games I definitely saved thousands of dollars. Also, my brother doesn't have as much time as before to play games because of his job that eats a lot of time and his girlfriend who eats even more time, so he allows me to play in his SNES and 3ds.

I am just getting into Sega MegaDrive (never had it, had Amiga as I child), and just set myself the maximum I am willing to spend/bit on eBay. If it goes for higher I am out. Also, Facebook listings. Still, it adds up pretty quickly - considering I've just started and got 5 complete games already.

I bought both editions of the gameboy Medabot (medarot) games pretty cheaply from Japanese sellers on eBay. The downside is I don't speak the language but I don't regret buying them. Hopefully I found a way to translate the 1st game.

You want to save money on things, just cut down on them a lot. So for video games there are all sorts of ways to save money. Obvious answers here would be Pc roms & muti carts. Aside from that just plan it better. You don't need to buy every console & games. If you do on planning games, I would say 10 games per console is enough & plenty. Maybe cut that down to 5 games per console.
