Venice has fascinated the world for over 1600 years. And for just as long, people have been scared of floods or worried that the city could sink into the sea. The latest attempt to protect Venice consists of 78 metal barriers that can be raised to separate the sea from the lagoon. The system is called MOSE. The flood barriers are working, but using them could put the surrounding lagoon is at risk.

How refreshing to see a public discussion of a major problem without all of the crying, screaming, swearing, and just general bad acting that seems to be the way even things like a torn fingernail are described in the media today. Well done!

I was in Venice during heavy rains and St.Marco was covered with water. Water was everywhere. People were eating in restaurant and caffe shops with the legs in water.

It’s not that simple. Once you remove too much groundwater, the soil compacts and then no longer absorbs groundwater.

I like there's no mention of the oil tankers and cruise ships that had forced to expand the access from the sea that is one of the main reasons for this problem.

I think when the climate cooling down, the city will not have floods frequently, or they can build up some Dijk at the edge of the city for the short time defenses, there might be some other regions don’t want their mountains or old buildings.

Venice is built in the Po delta, and deltas are always sinking. Simply the sediments of the river put down there push the crust down. Noone can do anything about it.

Venice isn't in the Po delta and the sediment moved by a river like the Po is nowhere near enough to cause a continental plate to sink

If those people are forced to relocate (Venice is densely populated), then environmental green space will be reduced elsewhere, so it's not like the ecosystem will remain unaffected or intact elsewhere anyway.

@@skycloud4802 Yes...maybe. Or one can relocate to cities and minimize the damage or...many options. But...I don't get the point of the comment. It is a bit obvious that relocating people has impacta and the pretension is to do less harm. Doing 0 harm is impossible.

Extremely Poor Design... that is Not a solution to High Tides over time. It is as if it were built in the UK... British design and build everything to suit the 1800s, not the Now and Never the Future. MOSE will be totally useless by the 2030s when the sea level has increased to the point the High Tides of Today will be Lower than the Low Tide level in less than a decade. Mose could / should have been constructed with either lift up, swing over, etc with doors/gates that are at least Three Metres above the current highest high tide level. This would have it useful for generations instead of a mere handful of years... The Sea Level Rising was Fully Known about when Mose was conceived - long before it was constructed. I was always EH? WTF? what is this thing... Insufficient and built for the PAST.

For the logs to rot they would have to be in contact with oxygen, and since the logs are all buried in water and mud, the logs are pretty well preserved.
