In the early 1980s I was in high school. One day while sitting in class, out of the blue, for reasons i cant recall, the school 16mm movie projector was rolled into the classroom. And they played for us several of these old, antiquated, 1950s Coronet instructional films on how to date, how to be polite, how to behave, etc. My classmates laughed through them. The wooden acting, the cheap production values, the heavy handed preaching, the over politeness, the squeaky clean activities (a picnic, a carnival, a weenie roast, bike riding, a day at the park, dinner at home with the family, etc), the innocent slang of the time (gee, golly, swell, etc). I on the other hand, wasn't laughing. To the contrary. As someone who was being raised in a severely abusive, dysfunctional home, i found these films to be quite charming. A sort of a time capsule of a more innocent era. DON'T get me wrong. I had no illusions. I was well aware that the 1950s wasnt so perfect and innocent (no decade is). That there were negative things going on in the 1950s, such as crime, corruption in government and private business, child abuse, segregation, poverty, suicide, violence, etc., for examples. But still, it seems to me that there were SOME things in the 1950s they were doing so right back then that we were doing so horribly wrong in the early 1980s as well as today.

Exactly. There was still evil and corruption in the world... but society made it a point to promote COMMON DECENCY and SELF RESPECT as well as the Respect of others. Today it's all porn and even drug addiction being promoted. We wonder why it's so much worse now. Is it really a mystery!?!?!?

That's the one thing they left out of this video, which they should've included. It's always better to stop hanging out with people who are bad influences, and who don't respect you even though it's hard to lose friends. Other than that, they did a good job getting the point across on not to give into peer pressure. Although, sometimes those tactics may not work. Sometimes, people need to be more assertive than that because people aren't always going to listen to you in situations like those. Especially in the dating examples shown, where the boy was continuing to "get handsy" with the girl even though she expressed that she wasn't ready for that yet. In fact in some cases like that, self defense and breaking up might be required if things go too far.

If you want to drink, go ahead but don't ask me to join in just so it seems more ok to you. I had friends who did all kinds of things that I didn't. No one said anything to me about it, if I wasn't on board that wasn't my problem. If you didn't want to be friends because I didn't want to join in, that was your problem, not mine. See ya.

One thing that differs between then and now is personal responsibility. I am unsure when it disappeared, but I have witnessed so many conversations (esp. when it comes to issues around consent) where people are under the opinion that "People shouldn't..." but people DO pressure others and act out toward others. It seems to be considered victim-blaming/-shaming to bring up any sense of one's own responsibility for keeping themselves safe and/or having difficult conversations. Sure, things can and do happen outside of our awareness or control, but in many cases, forethought is a priceless thing (or learning from the situation what you can do so it's less likely to be a problem in the future).

I have a better idea. Get different friends. Any friend who would force you to do something that you feel uncomfortable with is not a friend. When I was a teenager I never wanted to smoke, drink or do drugs. I am not judging people who do but I never was interested in experimenting with them. In fact when I said no other people felt empowered to say no also when they saw that the world didn't come apart when you said it.

If someone is trying to pressure you to do something against your Will, to do something against your moral convictions and values, THEN ARE THEY YOUR FRIEND?? Are they worth retaining on the inside of your life? Why is it that they don't respect your morals? Why are they SO EAGER to have you do THEIR chosen activity against your better judgement? Why are they so invested in your loosening your moral code of ethics?? Why do they have a problem with the word, "No"?? Will a true friend disrespect your convictions? If someone does disrespect your moral convictions, by pressuring you, why would you allow them influence over you? Do they have your best interest at heart? Will they have to live with the negative consequences of your going along with them? Or will you have to live with those consequences, after they are long gone? I find the premise of this entire film to be flawed: their stated goal is to maintain personal autonomy while maintaining acquaintances that do not respect their morals. Hanging around such so-called "friends" in the midst of their peer pressure to make poor choices, will only corrupt your choices and your heart over time. There is no wisdom in making companions of foolish people. They are intent on bringing you down to their level, doing damage. The consequences are real and not fun, and those people will not be there for you when the consequences come. You Will live with your own choices, and that includes anything you go along with. No corrupting "friendship" is worth maintaining. If they are the sort to use ridicule or negative pressure, release them. It is a no-win situation. Looking back, it was not worth it, it never is. > Compromising standards always brings pain and regret.

The way I see it, is teenagers always want to belong to a group and to be accepted, it's a natural part of growing up. And in some situations, like sports teams, you do hang out with your teammates, that's part of building a strong and successful team. I think the producers understand this, since this is for teens, and they're trying to give kids a way out of uncomfortable situations that they may find themselves in without being ostracized by the group, possibly even being a good influence on the group. High school is a tough time for most, and good decisions can be hard to maintain when you're trying to 'fit in'.

CA Catr but sometimes two people, be they husband and wife, best friends or colleagues have to decide what to do. If my husband says to me “shall we go see a movie on Saturday?” And I want to go to a pub quiz, I will say “no, i was hoping to go to the quiz, I really don’t fancy seeing Ironman” doesn’t stop him from trying to persuade me that it’s a good film. My mom always taught me good friends respect my standards regardless of their own. My friends who did drugs didn't pressure me to, so they were good friends. I had friends who did try to pressure me to do stupid things like watch a movie I wasn't interested in, or do things that were just a little bit below my standards. Even though the things they were trying to get me to do weren't the end of the world, I felt they were not good friends, and preferred friends who respected me as an individual.

I can relate in some ways. I am close with a few people who smoke almost everyday yet they never forced me to join them. In fact, the first time I learnt about their smoking behaviour, they asked if I was a smoker myself. When I shook my head, they would respect that and only smoke when I am far from them so as to not turn me into a passive smoker. I truly admire people like them

Forceps used in childbirth can do damage to facial nerves and cause that. I watched a documentary on the Rocky movies and it said that that's what happened to Sly Stallone when he was born, and that that's why his mouth looked the way it did, even affecting his speech, that he suffered from partial paralysis of certain nerves in his face as a result.

Not really creepy, though, is it? Especially if you notice something's wrong. I take it you just look directly at the floor when people are talking to you, in a huge effort to be as not-creepy as possible?

scottbaino Clothes are totally optional, but regarding the video's era, "petting" very generally was done outside the clothes more often than under the clothes, though both still occurred, and it depended a lot of the couple doing the deed. It involves touching, or being touched, on the body, generally on the boobs and crotch.

To those of you that have debated about the word "Petting" in the comments below, you must remember that was a different culture than this current era. The word means one thing now and meant a different thing then. Believe me, I'm old enough to know there was a difference. In "the innocent age", it simply meant stroking innocently, as in the forearm, the hand, or the shoulder. Since 1965-1970+, the word, "petting", has denoted sexual activity, not just innocent physical strokes. You all have extreme ways of defining things now. Back in the day, "heavy petting" was ANYTHING that was not pure and innocent. Just petting was just innocent stroking. Believe me, petting "up north" was serious, as in "heavy petting!" Cultural morals have become quite jaded, quite loose. If you're going to measure things by the culture, that's what happens in a perpetually sliding slippery slope. To measure morals by some steadfast value, you're going to have to use something that doesn't shift, like a sure foundation. Because if you don't, you'll let yourself become sexually involved, and end up with herpes. Wisdom > is the principal (first, most important) thing. Choose it.

In Loren Upton's 1977 "Roads End to Roads End" crossing of the Darien Gap, he utilized a 1977 Jeep CJ-7. Crew members included John Blake. Upton would later become the only recorded person to traverse the Darien Gap multiple times (and the only to cross it entirely on land, without the assistance of river ferries) when he crossed it in a 1966 Jeep CJ-5 from 1984 to 1987 on his last round-the-world attempt. Two other attempts to cross the Gap ended with Upton turning around and heading back to the United States. For the Jeep fanatics.
