Swedish is like Icelandic but cool in its own way. Languages are so unique and individual that you can't really say which one is better. Icelandic sounds sweet and sometimes like wind or erupts like volcano. Swedish is melodic with its tones and it sounds playful. Damn I must learn at least the basics. Jag äter köttbullar

I like this video was very explained on every detail, which is excellent. Like in English in Spanish we refer to / I / equals to /Yo /Jag /or the first person singular, a subject or any theme your talk about will be the subject. The 2nd person You (the listner) /du/, The 3rd. Person, is the topic or theme anything you refer to while in conversation. I was wandering about the formal you/ usted/ like you explained; the British refers to their king the same way, very clear too good video, tack, hejda, gracias, nos vemos, pronto, Wilfredo de Puerto Rico.
Fun Swedish
Fun Swedish 10 ай бұрын
The formal "usted" is "Ni" but it is rarely used these days. Unless you are meeting the king very frequently. But it used to be as common as the Spanish "Usted" before the "du reformen".

Oh my goodness! When I first learned hon and han, I used Han Solo, too! And in English (in the US, at least), people use the term "Hon" as short for "Honey" when used as a nickname. "Hey, Hon...can you take out the garbage today?" It's often used to refer to a woman (like maybe a waitress)... which may or may not be rude (it's expected in the south). Anyway, I think of Han Solo and calling a woman Hon to keep it straight.

English is not lazy, it's a pragmatic language with a very pragmatic grammar, I grew up speaking Spanish and then learned English at an early age, the fact that in Spanish (as well as French, the other language I speak) objects have gender is illogical, a table is a table, no gender there

Hi Daniella, My sister gave me a book for my birthday. Dutch to Swedish travel language guide. But everything is written in "Ni" instead of"Du". It's probably this way because in our country we use "U"(Ni) to strangers to be polite instead of "Jij"(du) My questions is can i just replace the Ni in this book for Du or will the whole sentence be wrong in that way. In that case the whole book would be pretty much useless😢
Fun Swedish
Fun Swedish 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! Interesting. Yeah, sometimes translations doesn't include the social codes like the fact that it is weird to use the formal version "Ni" (in singular) here when you are talking to someone. We just don't use it anylonger in Sweden. So yes, you can and should replace the "ni" in the book with du. For example, "Hur mår du?" = How are you? instead of "Hur mår Ni"? "Ni" is only used for plural refering to many people (you guys or you girls for example). Hur mår ni? = How are you guys/girls? Hope that helped!

@Fun Swedish thanks for your comprehensive answer. I'm glad i can still use the book and just replace it by "du". Your answer helped me a lot! 👍👍
jaded LoTuZ

Can be good to point out that "Du" and "Ni" are interchangeable in modern Swedish. But some formal text, or if you just want to sound formal, (or if its an older/classic quote) then "Ni" is used ("du" was/is more the casuall friendly, in the family way of saying it). Some/many old people (70+) still use "ni". Most younger generations never use it (say like under 30). Cheers.

Yeah, it's useful! Unfortunately it's often used where "den" is more appropriate. "Den" really already was a gender neutral pronoun, extensively used in the Swedish language to indicate genderless objects/persons. But "hen" is ia useful where you explicitly would want to indicate a non-male/female gender.
