Grooming a Maltese head using blenders, straight and curved scissors can be a gratifying experience for any pet groomer. The ultimate objective, beyond the comfort of the dog, is to create a charming facial expression that captures the canine's inherent beauty. Whether it involves highlighting their dark eyes with a carefully crafted fringe or shaping a perfectly round head, it's a task that demands skill. This grooming guide offers a detailed step-by-step process on how to effectively use chunkers, blenders, thinners, and straight scissors to create a seamlessly rounded and blended head on a drop coat.
While using chunkers, blenders, and thinners on a drop coat may initially seem complex, strategic planning simplifies this. Following our guidelines allows smooth utilization of these tools. This guide provides useful tips, streamlining your work process and boosting your expertise.
TOP TIPS FOR USING CHUNKERS, BLENDERS, THINNERS
Chunkers- Chunkers scissors/shears are renowned for their unique design and functionality. Characterised by wide teeth and substantial space between each tooth, they enable the effortless removal of large amounts of hair in a single stroke. This feature speeds up shaping the dog hair into the desired style and the bulk reduction processes.
Blenders- Blender teeth are designed closer together for a seamless blending of hair, reducing hair removal as compared to a chunker. The optimal strategy for using a blender on a drop coat like a Maltese is to scissor in the coat's direction. This technique ensures a smoother and more refined finish, preserving the natural look and texture of the hair.
Thinner- A thinner scissor or shear possesses finely spaced teeth designed for blending or reducing the bulk of a dog's hair. For blending purposes, it's recommended to use the thinning scissors in line with the coat's direction. Conversely, to handle thick a coat, the thinners should be used against the hair's direction. Consider a dog with an abundance of cheek hair, one should use the thinner, make a single cut against the hair's direction ( at the base of the coat, near the skin), brush out the cut hair, and repeat if necessary. This technique allows for a more manageable and aesthetically pleasing look
