Hitting full power smashes can win you points but when you do it all the time, many opponents will be able to adjust to it. The so called Stick Smash will help you to break the rhythm of your opponent by hitting a lot steeper attacking shots, get totally out of reach for him or her and win you so many points.

Additional Info:
If you look closely you will realize that Viktor Axelsens Racket is not rebounding after his attack in the video, because he uses even less power and speed in the rotation to play it as short as possible. If you want to see a perfect example for powerfull Stick Smashes look for Lee Zii Jia, there you can also see the rebound in almost every shot.

I love to use stick smash in doubles, especially against older intermediates players who usually play slow and tactical with lots of flat lift and clears.

Thanks for the tip and video! I've only noticed last few months there's not 'a' smash but many variations. This style of smashing was one I've been preferred as I've struggled with timing and positioning for regular forward smash. Great to see you teach it and recommend it for those wanting to get used to things and forearm rotation! As I'm a bit slower to learn new tricks this is my current go to

I'm a beginner and have been doing stick mash (unintentionally). Due to my lack of technique, experience, power, etc, whenever I tried to smash, I always end up doing the stick smash. The cock falls pretty close to the net. I've been trying to fix it since it's neither a drop shot or a smash, but it seems I have to learn how to do this consciously!

Ah, my coach calls this quick smash. Very useful indeed, when you play this shot, opp gets off balance and there you can follow up with full power to end the rally.

Without knowing the name & technique, i had used this stick smash only for around head shots. I got small injury in shoulder recently. After that i completely stopped using any around head shots. Instead i switched to backhand for those shots.

Hey Tobias, thank you for this great video! one questions i have is would you say another advantage for using stick smash is that the preparation for this shot is quicker than a normal smash with less body rotation so it could help to catch your opponent off guard?
@tobiaswadenka8435
@tobiaswadenka8435 Жыл бұрын
Yes 100%. On flat lifts you usually have no time to prepare for a power smash with body rotation. That is also why you will suprise many opponents with a stick smash because they do not expect something fast in that situations.

Stick smash is very effective to allow placement of wherever you want the shuttle to hit the floor... Vary it... If your opponent is at the back a gliding drop will force him/her to come closer to net... If he's close to the front a full smash might be better... A stick smash is useful for a counter strike situation where the opponent is not fully ready to reach to how quick n sharp the shuttle comes back after he or she just hit it and you can't have the time or not in place to do a full smash to catch the opponent on a just recovered after a hit state. Drop will be too slow and they can still recover and dive/lunge forward quickly...

@tobiaswadenka8435

Yes most likely, because you will develop more power in your forearm, that will also help your smash or any other power shot

Where should the index finger sits when doing stick smash? I see at 3:52 you have your index finger on top of your middle finger, and your thumb on top of the index finger, kind of like holding a fist.

Goh v Shem and Lee zii jia seem to use these in place of full power smash and they have the best smash in the game. Does this mean I should completely replace the full power smash with this technique?
@tobiaswadenka8435
@tobiaswadenka8435 Жыл бұрын
They also use arm movement many times. Especially Goh is extraordinary in using his full body to hit hard and you should defintly also be able to hit "normal" smashes.

It is a very big topic as so many factors play a role what you should and can do in the gym. I already tried to give a few ideas on that in those two videos here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJ-dkpx30LzOZac.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kLqZaZiSyJmtlpc.html maybe that can already help and answer a few questions but as soon as you want to start out with weights you should always have a professional coach or instructor at your side!
