Wool fleece usually needs to be scoured (washed) before it can be dyed. In this video I'm quickly demonstrating my method for scouring raw fleece in preparation for dyeing. I'm working with only part of a fleece - before starting you should make sure the fleece is skirted, so any particularly matted or soiled areas are removed.
This is the first part in a series of videos on fibre processing, following along as I prepare fibres for spinning into yarn ready for weaving or knitting.

Thank you so much, this was very informative and easy to follow! I've spun from pre-washed roving before, but I bought my first bag of rae landrace wool this autumn and I haven't touched it much yet. This helped lots! ❤

Hi Marina, I wash my fleece similar, I then put it into a old pillow case, and put it into the laundry on spin cycle. Works well🙂

Great video - I do mine in a similar way but work over a few days to do a whole fleece. Spin dryer helps so much but the best item I've found for drying is a hanging herb dryer with 8 shelves from Ebay for around £15. Can't believe how quickly my fleece dries now compared to a clothes horse with pea netting on it....just fyi. Once it warms up, I'm going to try the cold washing method to see how much lanolin is left behind - just to many fleeces and not enough time

Hi, love watching your podcasts! I’ve found putting washed fleece in my washing machine for a spin cycle really helps with getting the water out and then hang it in the trees in the shade.

If you haven’t spun yarn before I’d really recommend getting a drop spindle and some commercially combed top to start with. I’m definitely glad I learned that way before preparing the fibre myself as commercially prepared fibre is much easier to spin a consistent yarn from. Having said that, if you have ready access to raw fleece, give it a go! You’ll have loads of fun.

I've had good luck using the spin cycle only on a washing machine to get the excess water put. You can also get a 'spin dryer' that only spins.

You wash your fleece like myself I do like fairy washing up liquid best as it pulls the Greece/lanolin out so much better than the cheap ones. Thank you for making this video.

Thank you, very useful! I have a lot of raw wool fleece from our Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace. In the time of covid where almost nothing happens, I may have time to learn how to use this treasure hidden in garbage bags. Digital hugs from Merete

@@MarinaSkua I think I will wait until late spring or summer because it's very cold here now. When I tried to wash and dry fleese the first time, it took forever to get it dry. But you had some nice advice ... I want to try it again. And I would love to have you here when I do it. After covid ... you're welcome any time!

@@hansgardenkornstadstrikkpa5104 It's so much easier if you have a sheltered spot outside where you can leave the wool outside when it's warm. Oh and that would be so magical, just imagine!

Hi great vid, may I ask if you know if cleaned fleece can be dry needle felted with it being carded first?
@MarinaSkua
@MarinaSkua 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I suppose it could be, though I have very little experience needle felting so am not the best person to ask.

I really enjoyed this. I am COMPLETELY new to this. I received a beautiful spinning wheel for my wedding anniversary and wanted to learn the process. I was then gifted a huge pile of raw wool and I have absolutely no idea how to store it and would be grateful if you could give me some pointers. I am also in the uk so I am hoping to wash a little at a time and dry it ready to learn to spin, keeping it in pillow cases with some lavender and rosemary. How would I store it in the meantime, currently it is spread all over my kitchen table and the whole house now smells of a farm! 🤣😂🤦‍♀️ I look forward to watching your videos and leaning how to work with this amazing fibre. Gx

You generally want to store the wool in something breathable but that won't allow moths in; old pillowcases are a perfect option! But yes, having somewhere a little out of the way to store it while it's waiting to be washed is good if you can, as it does smell.

Hi Marina, thank you for suck a clear and helpful explanation. All the other videos I’ve seen on this have been made in the US and have said Power Scower is needed so good to know washing up liquid also works. How much do you put in and how long do you leave the fleece in for on each wash! Thanks again!
@MarinaSkua
@MarinaSkua 3 жыл бұрын
There’s no doubt that Power Scour works better; it cleans more quickly and thoroughly, and leaves the fleece feeling ever so slightly nicer afterwards, but washing up liquid does fine. I don’t use that much; a small squirt in that big pan each time. You can use a bit more if needed but I err on the side of less. I tend to leave each wash for a different amount of time before changing it - when the water starts to look like it can’t hold any more dirt or begins to cool down I’ll change it. I don’t like to leave fleece in water that has gone cool because it means a lot of the lanolin etc. will settle back into the wool. Really glad you found the video helpful!

@@AlisonPhilcock oh absolutely, much better to do when it’s warmer - I would do most of this outside even when it’s not particularly nice out, but with it being so chilly now the change in temperature on taking the fleece out of the water would shock it!

Hot water on its own won’t felt fleece. Agitation and detergent along with hot water will, or a sudden change from hot to cold.
