Great creativity! Thanks for sharing! Another way to set column width: In normal view, select column(s), go to page layout view, right click on selection. select column width, enter desired width in inches, click O.K. Use same procedure for row height. This allows entering exact measurements rather than "hunting" with the mouse.

Hey Ron, The members of the NVR/WAS HO Railway Club have just started watching you videos during our DEAD HEAD NITES. So two nights ago I previewed this Episode for an upcoming evening. Back in the early 1980's we built replicas of the World Trade Center's north and south towers. The lead modeler on that project unfortunately passed away in the 2000's, or I would have loved for his take on your experience. But there are a few things I recall that would make your skyscraper build go A LOT easier. We used the same etch technique on the models as you did. Where we differed was we did not infill paint the entire interior. Also our build procedure vary's with yours greatly. So starting with the assembly. Next time try doing your cut and etch work the same as you did here. Then, if you must paint an entire solid color, paint it before the glue up. After you have applied your final coat of paint and allowed it to dry fully, we used an old, second hand, belt sander inverted and attached to our work bench. GENTLY!!!! lower the styrene or acrylic to the moving sanding surface. That smooths out the edges and removes any unwanted over coverage of paint. You now have a pristine surface to affix together with Acetone in a picture frame clamp. In our case we left some windows clear with blinds, shades, or curtains with interior lighting and photographic images of private offices or long pix of Dilberts. While I was writing I was thinking, we removed the WTC model after the 9/11 attacks. If I can find it I might recommend, on the Wednesday that we watch this video, that we bring it out and place it in it's own display cabinet. Not on the layout but maybe in our Whistle-Stop Cafe'.

Car Tint Film. I have used it on fish tanks and it should work just fine for the building. Or black poster board, black paper or no parking signs painted black. Corner might be done wit square tubing and butt you building side up to that and avoid the wall edge view. form the side walls. Also look into paintable caulking...? not sure how well that will work but I use it for wall and window moldings that I will be painting.
@RonsTrainsNThings

+IMRROcom I thought about tint film after the fact. I have used poster board, but want to get the tint affect in a lighted structure. Paintable caulk, I would be painting the wrong side. As for corners, I will solve that problem in the structures I build for the next installment in a couple weeks. Hope y'all had a good holiday season.

When I touch up the paint job on Donkey, my 22 year old Toyota pickup, which is done in Rustoleum 2X Ultra Flat Black, I use silicone to keep the paint off the chrome, glass, and lighting. It's easier than tape because I can just rub it on vs having to carefully cut and stick it like tape.

Holy smokes, dude. I paint 1/144 scale mecha and put them in diorama (still a noob, only done two), and I betcha i could paint that stuff on better than i could cutting and masking with 2mm tape. Especially in applications like curved trims and emblems. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ron, Love it!. Rather than sizing the rows and columns manually - you can left click (and hold it clicked) on the top row, drag your mouse to the required number of columns, and then right click. At this point you will be able to size all of the columns to the same width at one time (it will appear as an option called 'Column width'. Hope that helps! Marty

Note that "Lexan" paint - check your local hobby shop that sells R/C cars can be used for the building (again, spray on the inside). For Excel, highlight all the columns you want, right click on one of them and enter the width, all the highlight columns will now be that width. Same thing works for height.

You could use flat black lacquer on the back of the plexi-glass and it would look just as glossy on the front of the structure because the gloss is coming from the plexi-glass. You would like working with the flat lacquer much more than the gloss enamel. Lacquer adheres to almost anything really well.

You can buy colored acrylic sheeting but by reverse painting clear plastic you can mask off window sections the remove it for a second coat so you can lite it for a night time scene thru the the less opaque film. Having done commercial glass installations most seams hit between floors and most are never taller than a single story due to manufacturing limits. Limit scratches by not removeing the protective film until you need to and a bit of acetone helps painting some plastics by dulling the surface at bit before application. You can also back the plastic with metallic paper etc to give it a mirrored look as many buildings use today and look up scoring plastic with a notched tool video because you can snap it like glass too.

Looks good Ron.silicone can not be painted with anything but silicone silly, they do have silicone paint.its a roof coating or anti graffiti, We use vinegar and water to clean these type of products multiple wash with a clean paper towel each time . with a product like this that is so smooth sometime if you over spray the paint on it can act as a so called etch surface as the over spray or mist dries and gives you a profile when it dries to hold the heaver coat.and gives it some tooth.Anyways looks good Ron Thanks Brian sps

Hi Ron, I'm wondering whether a glass cutter would work well to both cut the Plexiglas and to score it. Also, there is a product called "Plexus", available at Motorcycle shops. It is used to clean the Plexiglas windshields on motorcycles and works extremely well, helps to get out scratches as well. You may want to give that a try to get a final clean on the surface.
@RonsTrainsNThings
@RonsTrainsNThings 6 жыл бұрын
Glass cutters will not work on plexiglas. They don't score deep enough. They depend on glass which is very brittle. Plexiglas is very flexible and needs to be score much deeper to snap. Thanks for the tip on Plexus. I will be sure to check that out. Thanks for watching, Don.

Ron, very interesting video and scratch build. Like the idea and can be used in a number of applications as you suggest. I read some of the comments and some modelers mention Tamiya Paints, if I'm not mistaken they do make one called "SMOKE" and it's a tint like the green, red, ect. If you can find some of that you could then do the lighting inside and still add enough that you won't be able to see inside other windows if you so desire. Thanks for sharing. D. Muse

Ron, never having worked with plexiglas I have no idea of the properties other than what you presented. When you were trying to get the window tint to work..I wondered if you could have first scuffed the inside with that #600 or even finer.. then paint it black. My thought is..the gloss sheen is still on the outside..so, I am not sure how the "scuff" would appear through the glossy front surface. Also..if that does work.. you might try an accent color first that would go into the score marks..then scuff it off.. leaving just the scored color..then the black.. now you would have basically what you have done in this video with highlighted window frames. Tom

Got to be Tamiya.... And it IS good for that sort of thing. Tamiya Paint for Lexan, which I use in my other Hobby, RC Crawling, is best for this project, because it comes with an etching solution. Like on a Lexan Body, you spray it on the inside. Not only does it look AMAZING on the outside, but the etchant bonds the Paint so strongly, that it hasn't chipped - even when my Tiny Truck rolled down a hill !!! 😱😱😱 So, in your application, that Paint will long Outlast YOU!! It was the weathering take cars that you posted the question on last night, but here is a copy of that response. I personally use a small compressor made for airbrushing. You can use almost any compressor, but you MUST have two things with it. 1) You have to have a regulator that allows you to adjust the pressure coming out of the compressor. 2) You really need a moisture trap because any compressor will create moisture in the tank as air is compressed (it is some kind of science thing, lol). This moisture will come through your airbrush and ruin your paint job. You can buy a combo regulator and moisture trap from lots of places. If you are interested, here is a link to one for less than $13. amzn.to/2FBasYX BTW I am obligated to disclose that this is an affiliate link.

GREAT idea Ron, like the effect and it would EVEN work on older store fronts too. I was wounding if you lightly sanded the inside of the glass if the tint would hold ok, as the front is still shinny and the inside is not seen you could still get the effect, or just had a thought how about using sheets of window tint like they use on Windows, just a thought. Thanks for sharing....

Ron, your moving the arrow around just confuses me and makes me loose my thought process. Please in the future don't move the arrow around so much. i am really trying to follow what you are doing but than I loose it all when you jump all over the place.
