I am an opera singer who is also a big metal fan (they go together well surprisingly), and while I'm no expert metal singer or anything like that, I can definitely say that exercising and especially breath control/breath exercises are unequivocally THE most important thing for my singing
@Filip67549 жыл бұрын
jaketaz It would be nice if you trolled the shit out of your orchestra just by screaming instead of singing some parts :D.
@jaketaz28489 жыл бұрын
Chvocht CZ unfortunately that is something that must be kept to a personal hobby. even an expert screamer would have no hope of projecting over an orchestra since it must be done without a microphone, and screamed vocals have almost zero resonance without a microphone and so will not be heard.
@llChrisTjll9 жыл бұрын
jaketaz Sounds like the near dead silence would "scream" volumes, haha; funny thought
@viktorsecic9 жыл бұрын
You are wrong. Screams are very loud and the reason death metal singers use mics is because of big and loud crowd and non-acoustic places for their concerts.
@jaketaz28489 жыл бұрын
Viktor Sečić Ok, the next time you sing over an orchestra try screaming and see for yourself. But since that will never happen, you can do a simple experiment to prove it to yourself. Simply record yourself with spectral EQ doing a scream, then again singing in a resonant manner as an opera singer would. If you can't do that, simply open up a sound file of someone screaming, then open up a sound file of someone singing operatically, and make sure both files are played at the same volume in a program that shows spectra EQ. even at the same volume, the opera singer will always appear louder on the spectral EQ because operatic singing contains more harmonic content, high medium and low frequencies, whereas the scream will have a high amount of white noise (which is not resonant). Any of these methods will prove to you that you are wrong. Or contact me on Skype and I will sing opera in your face and then scream in your face, which will also demonstrate the difference.

I spit my water out at "Don't go there". I saw your video a couple weeks back on getting random people to give you their best screams and it inspired me to really work on mine. I've been able to do it for about eleven years now but never worked or practice because where I live there's little to no scene for it so it's hard to go see shows. With that said, I'm determined and hopefully one day I can get on a stage or record with some friends. Love your stuff dude.
@coopertimbs-poke68699 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! Definitely agree with you on the warming up and practicing part there. I had band practice all day from about 10:00am to about 4:00pm so i was screaming In Hearts Wake covers all day. And then I went out to a local show where there was a few melodic hard core and death metal bands that I'm friends with. And the last band that played, I'm great friends with them and I do their roadie work and live tech, they played a cover of Dark Days by Parkway and i jumped up to do some guest vocals and from what i could hear through the foldback as well as the PA next to me, I sounded pretty damn crisp and intense. So practicing really does pay off. I was screaming all day at band prac, and then when I performed later that night with another band, it DEFINITELY paid off.

I have an issue where when I try to scream I can't get the distortion out of my voice. It just sounds like a loud whisper. I've watched a bunch of peoples techniques on how they develop the scream and I can't seem to get the hang of it. Any tips?
@nmd-4539 жыл бұрын
The way I found easiest to do it was watching "how to scream/growl w/ Wayne Hudspath". The way he does a transition from the regular voice into the scream is interesting. If you just mess around trying to copy the way he changes into the scream you might work it out. Just remember to keep your throat relaxed and focus breathing properly. I always do that to find the technique before a session and then build it up with all the extra parts like jaw position, squeezing my diaphragm, bouncing the sound off my palate etc. Just start small and don't rush, it takes ages for me to manage to do it properly and just as long to get them sounding ok. I hope I've covered your question to some degree (I know I've included a bunch of tips that are probably irrelevant at this stage, but some some of it might be useful)

What he did here really does help because if beginners don't know what he just said then there going to have a lot of trouble and so it's more like "how to scuba dive" because if a scuba diver doesn't know how to use his mass amount of gear he'd be screwed and so with out breath control without practice and all the little things like even running ect. is all stuff if any vocalist hopes to be anything needs to know this really does help a lot of people. Not trying to fight you but me been doing metal vocals not to long but doing them I this is all very true and extremely helpful and encouraging B). Hi Jared. I have been working on getting the basic technique of screaming for about 5 months and I am fairly certain that i have found it. However I can't seem to project it into a proper sounding scream. Any advice?
@adamk66869 жыл бұрын
Best advice I can give for breathing techniques is to use your diaphragm when you inhale, don't let your chest puff out, fill up your stomach instead. It is way easier to build up pressure before you scream so you sound strong right in the beginning. It is also a good way to regulate your exhales. I actually learned this from playing trumpet. My private instructor used to stick a pencil in my side and say "if you don't make the pencil move your not breathing right"
@jakepilla12708 жыл бұрын
OK so I have been having a really hard time recording highs. I thought it was my mic but when I do my highs I have to project. that's how I learned and people want me to do "whisper highs" I just can't. is there any advice on how to maybe lower my projection but still get the sound or maybe software tips.

Sometimes they hurt, yet other times they don't. Do you have a theory for what I'm possibly doing wrong? My screams sound very similar to the vocalists I try to replicate, but I would love to know how to improve and maybe develop my own style. Thanks. ✌

Teaching people to scream is pretty damn difficult. It's hard to teach considering you might not really know if what you're doing is right until you have a tonne of gigs. Even then some vocalists burn out over time which massively depends on how well their throat copes and how they do the scream. Good video dude.

Why is it, when I feel my diaphragm pushing air out, and I can hear a small scream, but its just a whisper? Like it is just a really weird sounding whisper.

You probably aren't forming the sound with throat as you use your diaphragm. A great way to practice is by using your diaphragm to say "Hey!" Then applying false/fry after you have the strong loud hey will make it more of a scream.

So I started noticing that it sounds like different people are putting distortion on their vocals. Is that true? If so, how would you do it? Would you scream just like normal but put the effect on top? Or is there some weird way to get it to sound good?

Here's a question: I'm stuck at trying to fry scream, but I can do inhales and growls, any advice? I get stuck at the projection part, which I think would make me actually sound like I'm screaming, but I'm low yelling, yet I know how to use my diaphragm from clean vocals, then getting into harsh, I did growls for 2 years, and inhales for about 10.

So Jared.. I don't have months or even years to develop a good tone. I need a vocalist who can perform screams for an upcoming project ( run- awolnation "Djent" cover) I was wondering if you'd be interested in that... Cause by the time I learned how to, it'll be much too late and the song will be obsolete. If you can't, do you know someone who will?

How long have you been screaming for? I'd love to know to get a grasp on how much time it takes to learn to scream. I'm probably starting a series of tutorials on how to scream and it'd be good to help people realize this isn't something you learn in a couple weeks.

You should do example warm ups. Like what you do and how long and stuff. And could you show how to actually make a good quality vocal cover? Like what software and all that stuff..

I listen to a lot of ADTR and the only part that I seem to scream along to is the scream part in 'since you been gone'

Was wondering if you could also do tips on getting "gritty vocals?" Ex: James Hettfield, Disturbed, or Machinehead? Or someone suggest a channel than can?
