This Video is awesome! Ive been singing for practically my whole life and i was always listening to rock or metal, so i tried to sing like my idols do I went through these 3 steps, in the exact same way he did, learning how to Scream and shout So for everyone who is interested in screaming, shouting, or just roughing up your voice, THIS is the way to go.

what I’m wondering is how far you can go with this sort of technique as far as extreme metal vocals go. I’m inspired by dan watson of enterprise earth, whose vocals are much more hardcore than this and I’m wondering if this sort of thing would get me there

@@PablosCupcakes cheers to you! I thought i was the only one that did the heavy stuff, any way i can do the Fit For a King kinda scream that Enterprise Earth guy seems to be doing a more breathy scream this video would be for practicing the slipknot thing i think. For me i did the whisper scream( like mimick the words under the breath) and one time i gave it a shot, turned the volume way way up and gave it a try and it worked, i would say watch the one Jared Dines did, its an old one like search how to scream get the energy from your gut(diaphragm), but your scream will sound like who you mimmik best of luck!

Can I just say that, unironically, I absolutely love how stupid this sounds. A lot of singers are afraid to sound stupid and get super self conscious about their voice, but doing the stuff that sounds silly or goofy like you are at the beginning is HUGE. Lots of guitar exercises are essentially just noises very rarely sound musical, but they make you a better player. It's something that vocalists tend to shy away from.

Same, until I found some kind of way of moving slightly and finding the false vocal chords. One hundred percent had to do with support muscles. Without them, you're trying to support it all on the delicate muscles and cartilage in your neck/throat, and they're just not built for that. It wasn't the healthiest way, but my first big step towards doing it well actually involved a little clenching. I've learned to relax that since, but it definitely put me on the path to finding the RIGHT muscles to use. Prior to, I'd always end up in coughing fits, sore throat for a day or two, raspier voice. Now, every once in a while I'll feel it a little (tea fixes it in minutes), but generally I can sing along to an album or three and you'd never know (nor would I, really). Literally full metalcore albums with nothing but growling and screaming. The BIG thing to remember is that the volume you hear on stage or on a record has a level of production on top of it. Trying to emulate the INTENSITY without amplification is also a recipe for disaster. I know it's not metal, but Dave Grohl is said to be an incredibly quiet singer in person, but fantastic sound engineers can fix that in a second. A lot of people try to sing over music they're listening to and trying to hear themselves, it's a losing battle and reinforces bad habits. Do it at a volume that's comfortable for YOU, not a volume that will let you hear it over your headphones or whatever. It's like he said at the start, if you're just trying to copy what someone else is doing, you're going to hurt yourself. It requires legit technique to do well. Videos are great, but it's absolutely possible to sort of figure it out on your own. Just... if it hurts or feels different, stop, you're doing it wrong.

I am pretty stuck right now. I'm in a grunge band with a good mix of melodic and heavy songs, we've been going 4 years. Since the big covid break we all had, I've found it incredibly hard to scream at all (where it's intended/needed) and find my voice just dries up instantly when I try to scream. I couldn't even tell you what my technique was before covid as I self-taught from the age of 9, listening to a lot of nu-metal, so imitated that and had no issues. When I started listening to punk rock and other genres, I just kind of imitated that too and it worked up until covid, but since that big break of no shows, I've had issues trying to dial it back in after doing it for YEARS. I'm currently tracking vocals for our 2nd EP and it's got to the point where I'm actually afraid to attempt any of the screaming passages in the songs on the EP, because I know how it's going to go. I tried a couple of passes and it's the same thing - my voice just instantly dries up, chokes out and sounds weak. I'm going to attempt this method after a rest day tomorrow and hope that it re-trains my voice in some way. To anyone who had the patience to read this, sorry for the essay. There's nothing worse than feeling you can't deliver so I just needed to vent amongst some like-minded people.

Sorry for the late reply. I got it sorted, in the end. Some of it was physical tension and the rest was psychological, as it turned out. I was watching another video the following day after this one, not really taking it in, and something he said just clicked in my head - I can't even explain what it was. I thought "Hmm, I'll try it again." Vocals got finished that day. Seemed that I wasn't giving myself enough support and that in turn was tiring me and my voice out.

This definitely works. Note: you may still feel a bit of discomfort and fatigue at first. Especially when trying to control pick within the yell. That's ok. You will condition and improve. If you get a bit of fatigue or start to lose your voice a little, that's ok. If you taste blood or it's painful, start the lesson over :).

Halfway in I expected to just see examples of compression or distortion singing followed by a plug for your singing course where the actual learning if there is any, can be done. So to have you actually teaching for the love of it, and demonstrating technique to people who just want to learn is awesome. @@sjsjdjfjf5116 Distortion is mostly about pressure. Not pressure on your chords but from your diaphragm. Ideally you use a fry technique but try to place it at the bottom of your chords, then open up your throat and push -only- from the diaphragm. So, "squeeze" (fry) at the bottom, open the rest. That's the easiest way for me to put it.
