Learn how to use what a lot of singers avoid to create aggressive, pitch-free screaming! You won't hurt your voice when using this approach either. Be intense in the right way (not tense) and execute with and without singing!

I couldn't agree more! Chris is seemingly the only one that acknowledges the emotion of music and the nuances while still focusing on safety. A lot of vocal coaches are kind of a one-trick pony, singing every distorted note in the exact same aggressive style, from AIC to Slipknot. I like that Chris focuses on why singers sound the way they do and not just that they're singing a certain high note or something.

@@giannismusic2694 The one trick pony thing is very true. I also find a lot of these youtube vocal coaches aren't incredibly competent singers to begin with. I feel confident in saying most of the youtube vocal coaches out there parrot the same information, have a habit of saying a whole lot of nothing, and don't having the talent to back up their teaching. Even vocalists I have a lot of respect for like Mary Zimmer have a hard time explaining stuff like physical responses (like resonance in your chest or whatever). I don't doubt she's a great coach in person or over skype, but Chris just has an incredible way of describing things in these videos. In every one of his examples I can replicate/feel exactly what he's describing. It's almost scary.

It took me many months to do it correctly Trust me guys the more you practice the more you understand yourself especially if you do weird voices with different techniques I've been doing stupid weird sounds until I unlocked my screaming but it really took me a time, It really made me feel disappointed every time I fail so don't give up When you feel hurt just stop and drink a lot of water after every 25 mins so your vocal cords recover Never back to practice until your vocal cords are fully recovered 👍🏻 Best of luck

@@chrisliepe correct me if I am wrong basically to do the Scream you try to use head voice and chest voice at the same time but without do the mix voice but at a higher volume than the one required for vocal fry. For example if you try to do the vocal fry you try to basically talk with chest and head voice at the same time but without mixing and this causes vocal break. So to do fry scream you try to blend chest voice and head voice but without doing mixed voice am I correct?

Seriously, I'm binge-watching your videos on distortion and screams and I'm probably gonna be doing the same with all your videos soon. It's quite rare that a vocal teacher explains stuff in a way that is as straightforward and easy to grasp as you do it. Really amazing and inspirational (since I'm a teacher as well). Also, love the fact that you don't shy away from sounding "silly" in order to get your point across, you show exactly how it needs to be done in order to get results and even imitate the learning process. so much respect for that.

I was following instructions for fried screaming and somehow ended up doing exactly this on my own. I was worried because it sounded sooo loud, and fried screaming isn't really loud, and couldn't do it without huge deals of compression and tension in my body. This is very helpful since I can practice the positioning without huge amounts of energy and noise!

Thank you sooooo much. I wanted to add some screaming techniques to my repertoire to be more versatile, but there are so many videos out there describing something that is too abstract to understand. Your tipps actually made me find the right spots in less than 20 minutes. Wow. Of course I'd have to really develop it now, but that is such a great success when you at least finally know what you are looking for. As soon as you have that idea where to go, it's so much more fun to practice. I immediately subscribed. Seriously, this guy has a great voice, is well focused and is also a very talented trainer/teacher. A great combination.

Awesome video! Soon after I started singing I realized that in my normal speaking voice there is quite a bit of fry present. I was practicing using it all the time without knowing it. I've been trying to get into doing some heavier covers, like Disturbed for example, and this video is very helpful. I was having some issues going back and forth from clean to distorted vocals but its getting a little easier. I tried Down With The Sickness and felt like I just did like 300 situps, never realized how much breath support a song like that entailed.

Once again Chris, thanks! My gratitude towards you keeps growing and growing. Every time I leave a comment on some problem I'm facing or some artist I'd like covered, you seem to make a video about that specific topic. For that I really appreciate you. The very nature of being heard draws me to you videos every time just like the amount of knowledge you show! Since you really put the time you have into your viewers and one of your latest videos was about what we could learn about a female artist, perhaps you could take a look at Gwen Stefani. Her earlier albums with No Doubt like the Beacon Street collection portrays a really talented singer. This includes songs like Open the Gate, Snakes, Greener Pastures and Squeal. Songs that are technically really difficult and mostly a very high female register but full of pretty aspects like tone and breath control. Whatever your next video will be I fully support you! Sincerely, A very loyal follower.

I’ve always used false chord and it never hurt but would occasionally be a little irritating. I was never able to figure out fry screams because when I first started learning 10 years ago all of the tutorials were just other emo kids basically giving a shitty explanation of how they do it that basically consisted of “sigh til you get a gritty sound then push with your diaphragm” and that was it but this video actually made me understand fry screams and I’ve been successful doing them. All that’s left now is steady practice to strengthen them and get some power behind them. Thanks for doing such a good tutorial my guy

Where I'm having trouble is making the sound of the break just go into that fully terrible awesome shriek. So my current scream sounds like a vocally fried dead cat. I guess here's my question, when you're in the scream. Do you feel like you're in mostly head, chest, or mixed?

The singer from jinjer actually uses this same type of scream except she does it in a lower tone. Not many people, especially women, can get their fry screams that low which is why she’s such a unique vocalist. If you want an easier way to sound similar to that then you should search how to false chord scream. It’s much easier to do lows like that.

False chord is done by having your vocal folds held in an open position while using the tissues above the vocal folds to produce the distortion sound. The same breathing fundamentals still apply to this technique. Focus on placing the distortion around your soft pallet, imagining the sound being produced around your hard pallet can help, to avoid damaging your vocal folds while attempting this technique. The most common ways of finding your false chord sound is either by doing an overly exaggerated sigh, or mimicking the barking of a large dog. While doing that try to take notice of where the distortion is coming from. It should be above the vocal folds as mentioned above. Once you get the basic short burst of the sound down, work on extending it out longer. That should get you your basic mid scream and from there you can do tongue and mouth manipulations to change the sound. The main difference between fry screaming and false chord is that fry screams is vocal folds held closed and false chord is held open. Fry screams also have a "smoother" sound to them and false chord tend to sound more "clicky". Hope this post helps you.

Love the video! Sometimes when I try this technique I feel some hoarseness in my throat, even though I know how to use breath support and my diaphragm - is this normal? Is it just dryness from pushing all that air out or is there something I’m missing? I’m just sliding up to my vocal break then pushing air through hard.

tongue placement for fry? I’d assume the same as clean vocals. open throat and whatnot. and “yawn” sensation to open back of throat for fry too?

Excellent explanation and examples as usual. Got it first try on the quiet one. Now to build it up. Hey Chris do you know how to do/teach the Michael Starr, David lee Roth distorted whistle squeal? (for want of a better name) They seem effortless to those guys. Would love to know how to do those! Loving the full course so far man, it’s brilliant!

Nice man!! Ya there's a LOT more on the use of FRY in the course so you'll be well poised to take that stuff on :)

Really cool video. Do the practice, and you will be amazed at what you can do! I can, and do, high fry screams along with Slipknot, Slayer, Dreaming Dead, Jinjer, whomever I wish to, in fact! 😉 Yes, it is so much fun. I do get funny looks from people, because I practice while I am more or less power walking. Listen to Chris, and use good technique, and you will get there.
