We have been getting some big shirt orders lately for screen print (60+, about to get a 300+). Using water-based ink, how would I keep my screen from clogging up due to the ink drying? We were spraying a little water on the flood every few shirts but that only buys time. Eventually the screen clogs. Thanks!

Im trying to cure waterbased white ink on a 100% cotton black tshirt but it either keeps cracking, or turning grey after heating it. I am using a heat gun to flash then a heat press to Try and cure. i am doing 360 F for 90sec then off to let steam escape then back on for 160sec. Is there anything you would recommend? I cant fork over 1k+ right now for a conveyor dryer.

This is an awesome video! Just getting into screen printing my own stuff and have been using water based inks. One problem I had on a shirt I did was the ink seemed to have bled out of the finer design lines and made a big blob haha. I do believe it was a 110 screen and was using that speedball ink. I thought maybe too muck ink was on the screen but you seemed to completely cover yours. It was also a tri blend shirt. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Zaw. You can use, and make as many colors as you would like. Even mix up custom colors, and Pantone colors. What will limit you is how many colors your press has (ie 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). Most beginners will have a press 1-6 colors. You can even get creative with printing more colors that your press has heads on it, if the graphic is small enough. Check out our video on printing 7 colors with 4 screens. I use an all black system on with my 1430 and I use waterproof ink jet film. Try catspitscreenprintsupply.com and use promo code "MikeyDesigns" or you can go to amazon and get film there as well. amzn.to/2u70bi4

HI Mikey, Im having a art installation where i have to screen-print on canvas and I want to use water-based color. What kind of ink you use exactly for screen-printing ? Is it poster color or acrylic ? What kind of mixing do I have to do to start printing it ? Thank you, I am such a newbie so I would be really helpful if you can share your experience.

Been using water based ink. I’ve gone through a couple of stencils. I tape off any areas I don’t want printed. As I wash out the ink, the emulsion will come off. I’ve tried using a multi purpose screen cleaner. I’ve done just water as well. I’ll also print one color. Wash out. Fan dry. Then another color. Thinking this might be the cause.

Mikey Designs & Silk Screen Thanks! So if you were planning on reusing the stencil after the water washout at the end, would you still just spray it out like you did with a hose, or be more gentle and possibly sponge the ink off? I assume that with the water resistant emulsion and maybe some post hardening, the stencil should be tough enough to handle the hose?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 жыл бұрын
I would definitely clean it. If you don't the ink will dry up in the screen. When you go to reuse it, it'll be an issue with the dried ink mixing with the new good ink. Waterbased emulsion will hold up to the hose. We actually wash our screens out with a power washer. The emulsion holds up really well.

Hi Mike ! Do you really need a force air dryer? Is the air blowing in to the shirt or is extracting the moisture out? I have a regular dryer
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 жыл бұрын
Hi iovanniLR! You do need some sort of means to extract the moisture. Some screen printers use a fan to blow through the conveyor tunnel. The most common way to do so is with a forced air drier. They do however have an accelerator that works with a regular drier, so that may be something to look into. I hope this helps.

I'd recommend starting with plastisol ink. Much easier to print and won't dry out. There's more of a learning curve with water based inks.

So your ink does not bled outside the print area because your using a higher mesh count? I’m having problems with ink bleeding outside my print and thought maybe it was to much ink hit you use a fuck ton.
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 2 жыл бұрын
The higher mesh will help with the amount of ink going down. if you're using a 110 or 156, it's too low and will put down way too much ink.

You can pull the shirt up off the pallet, lay it on top of the pallet, and use a hair dryer in combination with the flash. The hair dryer will help force the moisture out. Much slower process, but it'll get the job done.

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473

You could use a flash cure, or a heatpress. You'll have to do some tests runs to dial in the proper amount of time you'll need to cure the shirts. I wouldn't recommend the oven, BTW.

Does the water base ink hold up as good as plastisols ink after months of washing on a darker garment

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 жыл бұрын
Just as well as plastisol. Many shirts on the market are water based white on black. Water based inks are just a little bit more of a process. You have to keep your screen's image area flooded, you can't leave the inks out or they'll dry up, and you have to use forced air or some sort of air circulation to help evaporate the moisture from the ink when curing.

I dont own a conveyor dryer. Do you think its possible to dry water based ink using a heat press instead?
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 жыл бұрын
Thing about using a heat press is you're going to transfer some of your ink onto your teflon sheet. You could use it, but before using your heat press, try and flash the ink with a heat gun or a blow drier first

Any time! Just trying to help out. I started out using waterbased ink and used a blow drier to cure everything. It takes longer per shirt, but works. I appreciate it! If you have a flash drier, that would be even better. Take the shirts off the pallet, lay them on the pallet, put your flash over it, and use a blow drier as well to help evaporate the ink. Just a thought.

I have a heat press that swivels. I turn it out and place the shirt under it for a few minutes until I feel like it's dry enough to press without transferring ink. Works pretty well for me 😊

@mikeydesignssilkscreen473
@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 6 жыл бұрын
I did! I had to call and ask what it was for. I'm trying to think of what it's called, but it basically speeds up the curing process and allows you to use lower heat. I'll get back with you when my brain isn't burned out and I can think of the proper terminology, lol.

Mikey Designs & Silk Screen - I know it's a catalyst, but I'm not sure if it's for lower temp cure or a chemical bond cure. Someone who used it quite a bit said you HAVE to use the catalyst with aerotex. I was put off a little when I emailed union about it and all I got back from the woman was "check the tech sheets"...luckily the last person I dealt with at union was a lot friendlier lol.

LOL, my understanding is it helps with speeding up cure times. If it's absolutely needed, we just f*** up 25 shirts. Hah. I'm going to wash my test prints and see how they come out, but really, they're just like business cards and don't really see people wearing them around.

Either plastisol or water based ink will work just find. Depending on how open the fiber is of the tote, you may want to adjust your screen mesh. More open the weave, more open of a mesh. High mesh weave, use a higher mesh. No higher than 200.
