This is my approach to sculpting a miniature figure for the first time using Green Stuff.
This is also my first time to sculpt anything close to 28mm, and I'm naturally shaky, so please forgive the jitters.

TIPS for SUCCESS (avoid frustration with Green Stuff!): ► Work in LAYERS! Sculpt a bit, set aside and let it cure, sculpt some more. Take your time with SMALL BITES and you'll avoid working under panic or stress. ► Work WET! Have a cup of water to dip fingers in, especially while mixing. Use a very thin, rubbed-in amount of petroleum jelly on tools or fingertips in extra sticky situations. ► If in a HURRY, use HEAT! Consider OVEN curing or, as I did to lessen cure time, a HEAT GUN. ► MAGNIFY that MIN! As shown in a few of the montage shots, I had head-worn magnifiers on for the finer details. If you've never worked with magnification, try it - because if something looks halfway decent zoomed IN, it'll look wholeway decent zoomed OUT. ► EVEN THAT MESS OUT! I almost didn't apply the Liquid Green Stuff, but I'm glad I did. I think that's when the whole thing came together, and some mistakes were hidden. TIPS for TAKING it FURTHER: ► MIX it UP! Consider mixing GREEN STUFF with MILLIPUT, PROCREATE, or other epoxy mediums to achieve a less "bubblegum" consistency. ► Get SHARP! For this video, I did a majority of the sculpting with a size 0 flat/chisel silicone shaper tool, and this shows in the soft, more ROUNDY features. But I think you'll get better results if you think like a wax carver, in terms of laying in material and making *cuts* with sharper tools.

Damn Crafsman, I started out making miniatures for our DnD games like this, from scratch with greenstuff, and I always felt like I just couldn't get the finesse and level of detail I wanted. So I've started "cheating", by modifying minis that I find in the hobby store - but you've just inspired me to go back to basics and make my original designs from scratch again! Just gorgeous. Never seen a mini with so much personal style!
@asafoetidajones8181
@asafoetidajones8181 7 ай бұрын
90% chance your issue was failing to work in layers. That is to say, sculpt the basic structure, let it cure, then add bits, let them cure, details, cure. Doing too much soft clay at once means not only having to rush, but having to mush. This is true of sculpey, too - baked sculpey can stand rebaking just fine, so sculpt your basics, bake, sculpt more til you're happy, bake to "save" your progress, add more layers. Green stuff is great for thin, fine detail like ears, faces, etc but kind of frustrating for your entire mini. I prefer to start with sculpey and only use GS or apoxie sculpt for details.
@themesteryphantom
@themesteryphantom 7 ай бұрын
Yep, this is absolutely true. The difficult part is usually that I have a tendency to be short on time and procrastinate 😅 not much time for curing layers. So I’ll often do the basic bulk in fimo, bake it, and then a layer of green stuff. But yea, absolutely true

I do a bit of mini sculpting, and I get a great modelling medium by mixing 50/50 Procreate (like green stuff but grey) and Miliput. The result is less brittle than Miliput, and less 'chewing-gummy' than greenstuff!

I can't stand greenstuff myself and only use it when I have to so you got my respect for sticking with it and getting a mini completed, I've seen others interested in trying this just give up rather than deal with Kneadatite.

This vid is one of my favorites. I'm currently repurposing a heroclix Hulk into a barbarian with the Arby's hat and a silly mustache for our famil DND campaign, and sculpting has been my favorite part of it. It is coming along, but this video really inspired me to finish that up and start something completely from scratch with armature wire and green stuff. Thank you Crafsman for making this video, and I'd love to see you expand on this concept too.
