I’m researching this for future paintings and I came across this video. Thanks for doing this. One question. Will heat effect the wax? If I’m shipping a painting, would the wax be reactivated as it travels with a mail carrier on a hot day? Thanks for any help
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
The melting point of beeswax is 151°F so it should not reactivate under normal conditions. In addition, the application is ultrathin so even if there was a slight reactivation, I would imagine it would not be noticeable. I ship all of my paintings in clear poly sleeves, and I have yet to have a problem when shipping paintings sealed with wax. So I would say that it is not impossible for the wax to reactivate but it would be incredibly rare and even if it did it shouldn’t be noticeable unless applied to thickly. Does that help? :)

Hi Bryan, I have a couple of questions: 1. I wondered how archival the cold wax medium is when used this way - I’m a bit concerned that it might begin to yellow after some time (years maybe, but even so). 2. Does it affect white gouache, for example where there’s a lot of white in a snow scene, i.e. would it yellow the white enough to be noticeable, do you think? 3. If I’ve attached a gouache painting which has been painted on watercolour paper onto a board (ply or mdf, for example) with archival PVA, do you think it’d be safe to use the cold wax medium on the painting? The paper won’t begin to lift off? I’m imagining not, to be honest, because the PVA sticks it down so firmly, but I wondered if that’s a risk? Thank you!
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions. From what I have read it does not yellow over time. Gamblin also indicates on their label it can be used as a finish. They seem to be a very honest company making quality products so I trust their recommendations. I have not noticed it significantly effect white gouache. It’s naturally white and the application is so thin that the effect is minimal, in my option. If you apply it to a mounted support, it should not lift up. The pressure applied is very minimal. Because it does slightly darken the values, test it on a small study first to make sure you like the effect. Also, the label states it is removable with mineral spirits. But I don’t know how well that would work with gouache because the solvent is a liquid and may reactivate the gouache. I haven’t tried it, but know I’m curious. So make sure you test it before applying to a painting you want to sell. Was that helpful? :)

As far as I know there is no uv protection in the wax medium. If you can get the pigment codes you can get a rough idea of lightfastness. Some pigments like alizarin crimson are notorious for fading. Earth pigments like yellow ochre are very lightfast.

@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 2 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the world of gouache!! It’s a great medium. When the solvent leaves the wax it is still soft like bees wax, so it could scratch easily over time. Krylon and Winsor and Newton make some spray varnishes. They would be more protective but the finish will darken the values of the gouache. Acrylic or oil paint would be another option. These would make a more solid bond to the cover and wouldn’t be as affected by moisture. Have you ever tried oils?

@@Iamrahcole so glad you decided to start painting!! Gouache is a fun medium and is a good way to transition to oils. Acrylics would be great for painting on journals. And oils are really great if you want to paint long term. They are actually easier to manage than acrylics, despite what everyone thinks. They don’t have a chemical smell like acrylics and you never have to wash your brushes, so cleanup is super easy. I have a video on brush care if you want to see how it’s done. @GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 2 жыл бұрын
@@Iamrahcole the wax would still get scratched with the oil paint. Oil paint can be used without a varnish but many people use a varnish to even out the colors and finish. Some oil colors dry matte and others glossy. The varnish evens that out and protects it as well. Here is a video on varnishing oil paintings. :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppd2bMuDu5fNqas.html if you used oils you would need to prime the journal with gesso to make sure it adheres properly.

are there no issues with dust sticking to the wax over years when you hang it without glass?
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry Жыл бұрын
That is one limitation of this method: the wax cannot be extensively cleaned and removed the way oil painting varnish can. I would recommend framing behind sealed glass to ensure the painting lasts for generations and is not damaged by environmental elements. This method could work well if you plan to exhibit the painting for short periods without glass.

There is another method that involves an isolation coat followed by a removable varnish. The cold wax has a small amount of solvent in it but it’s not enough to activate the gouache. I haven’t had any issues yet. Thanks for the comment. :)

Great question!! I did an experiment just for you!!! I used a prismacolor premier colored pencil. And with this pencil, quite unfortunately, it smudged. Probably the only option for gouache and pencil would be a spray watercolor varnish if you want to frame without glass. Kamar by krylon is popular and some other manufacturers make them as well. You’ll need a matte varnish if you want to avoid a shiny look and retain the original matte surface. Hope that helps a little. :) thanks for the question. Anything else I can help with right now?

Is the wax safe to use during pregnancy? Is it ok for sensitive skin or do I need to wear a glove?
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don’t know enough about the medical restrictions of pregnancy to say for sure. So it’s best to take precautions and ask your doctor. I always wear gloves because it saves me from washing my hands. There are two ingredients in this medium-beeswax (which should be safe) and a solvent (which many people find irritating). There is far less solvent than if you were to use solvent for oil painting. I don’t use solvents because I don’t like the smell, but the cold wax does not bother me. With that said, it might be wise to use a mask and to use it outside if you want to be extra safe. Again, it would be best to discuss the ingredients with your doctor to see what they recommend. Either way I would wear gloves because it can be messy and to keep the oil from your skin away from the painting and finish. Hope that helps. :) Anything else I can help with at this time?

Any problems with melting in heat or sticking to packing material during shipping?
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
No problems thus far. I pack my panels in plastic sleeves, and there is no sticking that occurs. Wax is naturally not sticky, which is why it’s used in wax paper for cooking and other applications. The melting point for bees wax is 151 F, so melting won’t occur during shipping, even in a very hot warehouse. When the solvent evaporates from the wax, it dries to the hardness of bees wax. So it is not hard like a resin, but it is by no means soft and sticky. Was that helpful? :) Happy to answer any other questions :)

Would you recommend doing this for a sketchbook painting or am I better off with something else?
@GalleryBry
@GalleryBry 3 жыл бұрын
The main purpose is to protect the painting from moisture and dust and dirt in the environment. A painting in a closed sketchbook is probably less susceptible to environmental factors than a painting hanging on a wall out in the open. The wax is not completely hard when dried, so I would be concerned about the pages smudging the wax over time. If you are concerned about your sketchbook paintings, you can try a spray fixative like Kmar from Krylon. But I would be concerned about the pages sticking together. So experiment on some sample paper if you want to try it. :) Give it a go and let me know what you think.
