I read soooo many reviews where people complain about their smokers or grills falling apart, warping, rusting through within a season, etc. These are the types of videos that manufacturers need to provide unseasoned grillers (the users not the equipment) so they know how to properly use their grills. I like the subtle additions you did with yours including the high temp RTV sealant for the firebox and the side clamps to make sure everything is sealed up right when you first start using that smoker. Let's face it... it's raw material from a factory and has not been broken in. Excellent video and instructions on how to first season your grill!!!

Good stuff...never did this before to a new grill. Note taken and will pass on to grillers like myself. Am on the market for a grill now roughly about 600-700 sq. cubic inch. Will have to do this ASAP and always thought they were ready out the box. Those metal shavings scared the crap out of me when you were lathering it with oil. Good job

They definitely help. Another thing that helps is, measure the outer diameter of your stack. Go to a muffler shop and have them cut you a 20" pipe of either 3" or 3.5" to go on top of your existing pipe (its either 3" or 3.5" depending on make, measure it first!). Helps with draw 1000%. When I seasoned mine I had a lot of smoke coming from my firebox, initially but that seemed to calm down later. Once it cools down from the original seasoning for thyme can you recoat it again and do it again like you just showed out here? I myself want to do that to my new Highland but I want to do it about three times let it season for about 6 hours cooldown repeat the process another two times just want to make sure I'm not overdoing it. Also once it season is it best to keep aluminum foil on the bottom to help protect the bottom

No. avoid it when you can. the fluid usually gets absorbed into ALL the nooks and crannies in the coals, and I swear that I can taste gasoline in my food even when the BBQ chef lets it cook off for a LONG time before smoking. You'll find a method that works for starting your coals that doesn't introduce a bunch of fossil fuel carbon poisons to your grill, and you'll become a true pitmaster!

Get yourself a box of tealight white candles, probably about $12.00 at any sporting goods/camping section at any Superstore such as Walmart and just slap one of those lil buggers on the grill, in a dish, you don't want the wax going over your grill, gotta let some people know that. Light it set your chimney over it, grab a beverage and let the show begin!!! That is all there is to it. No, "did the paper towels or that wad of paper go out". Those tealight candles are used on outdoor tables in all the 5 Star Resorts around the Country and the one thing they are known for is not going out while the good fine folks are eating their dinner, even on a simi-windy day!!! You can take that to the bank.

Vegetable oil absolutely does not "season" at 250 F. When you talk about seasoning, like seasoning a cast iron pan, it's about getting the fat hot enough above its smoke point it goes through a chemical reaction and polymerizes to the surface. Vegetable oil smokes at about 400 degrees. If you want to season a smoker throw something fatty in and fire it up hot. On top of that, it was way way too much oil. The baffle plate is never going to be clean ever again.

Badfinger Your points are well taken but misguided! The problem is that this smoker is not cast iron it is steel! In addition the seasoning of say a cast iron griddle or pan is for the purpose of keeping foods from sticking. And it takes numerous uses and years before cast iron is truly seasoned and you never use soaps to clean cast iron. Finally what was accomplished here was removing as much factory residues as possible before 1st cooking use. And it won’t hurt steel to take a day and give steel another oiling. Personally I prefer peanut oil because it has a very high smoking temperature.

Why do you have to season your smoker?

Hold my pocket Gaming good question. It is to prevent rust and make it easier to clean. Same idea as seasoning cast iron.

I respect your video but in my opinion the modifications are a waist of time and $$. Is this a fad or something? Monkey see monkey do type thing? Everybody copying. After all the money you put into the mods, that’s half the $ for a Yoder Cheyenne. Sorry to be so negative but this just doesn’t make any since to me one bit. I don’t want silicone burning while my food is being cooked. You will never see pit master do this! Not in a million years. If I offended anyone I apologize. ✌🏾

Mike Caldwell I can counter by saying why buy such an expensive smoker when you can buy this semi expensive smoker and smoke amazing meat? Is it some kind of fad or something to be led like a sheep to the most expensive products, eating a salesman’s ignorant speech just to get you to spend more?

It’s also called food grade high temp RTV gasket maker so it’s not the same as the RTV you would use on say a transmission or engine oil pan. It’s also waste of time not waist like your hip waist.

James Lemon- 🤣🤣 coming from a guy who’s got zero content on his channel I don’t think you are even qualified to say anything. Why not elaborate on your methods instead of just calling him a rookie? As far as I can tell his method so far is better than yours.

When i was in the business of BBQ . My smoker was seasoned with only hickory wood. I use no charcoal nor starting fluid. When i prepared my meets i never used liquid smoke. I made my own BBQ sauce from scratch. I ran my business for 3 years.

My customers told me i had better BBQ then all the restruants where i live. My experience as a cook was assistant chef. I'm an experienced meat cutter having worked in beef, pork and poultry slaughterhouse. I worked as a meat cutter in grocery store. Then a proprietor of cafe with one parking spot. My customers were v.a. employees and walkins. I raised two daughters with average bills like anyone else. I consider myself more then qualified in providing an opinion.

Seriously... I use spray cans of canola oil. People try to tell you to use canola oil in your cooking and food because they claim it is healthy. It's not. It is the worst oil for your health. However, it is awesome for seasoning your grill! It has a much higher smoke tolerance than regular vegetable oil. Linseed oil is good to but it is very flammable, so I avoid it. Not worth the trouble. Spray cans similar to Pam but canola oil makes this much easier. Trust me. Then, because of canola's high heat tolerance, you can heat your grill to 300 degrees F and it does a much better job. Works awesome.. Just sayin'...
