I consider just seeing deer from the stand a successful hunt. There were years where just seeing a yearling was awesome. I struggled through these hunts and have learned what it takes to just see more deer. It takes learning as much as you can about deer movement, adaptability, and many other factors.

My tip for learning about deer is GET IN THE WOODS. I had no hunting mentors growing up. For a few years we had an annual day after thanksgiving small game hunt. But My dad wasn't a deer hunter. When I started getting into deer hunting, there was no such thing as an internet and there weren't many books on the subject. I just tried to get in the woods at every opportunity and use a little common sense when it came to hiding myself from the deer while I watched them. I learned that If i walked I didn't see deer. But if I'd make my journey through the woods in 3 or 4 step segments, I saw more deer. If I made anything other than minimum noise, like breaking a stick, stop and stay still at least a minute. When looking around, learn to lead with your eyes. Scan all you can with your eyes before turning your head. Try not to stand out. A deer is as familiar with his woods as you are of your living room. I learned, by seeing others walking through the woods, that a body stands out ALLOT more if it's not right up next to a tree or rock. So, I did allot of moving from tree to tree in the woods. I didn't know what a portable tree stand was until I was over 30 so I did most of my archery hunting from the ground. Trying to get close enough and to draw on an animal that can see aprox 300 degrees around them teaches you allot. Yes, be very scent conscience and do your best to reduce your scent trail as much as possible. But, you have to realize that deer's nose is better than a dogs when it comes to detecting a scent. And we all know what a dog can do! The only saving grace is a deer won't usually flip out over every little tiny bit of your scent. But they do know something's up and log it into their brain when your scent finds it their way. Let them see a movement, hear an unusual sound, or see your breath as you exhale and all those things come together in the deer's flight center and he's gone. Just get out there and enjoy nature while you're logging knowledge into your brain housing group.

Go ahead and make the video! You may explain things in a way that clicks better than what I said. There’s no really new information out there, just new ways in presenting it.

Trails. Knowing where food sources are and if there using it And bedding areas. Being quiet and being still And stealthy I've found is more important than your decent I hunt on,the ground and I've had deer come so close. To only a. 5 or 6 yards from never smelled me but I was real still And quiet. My shots have been usually under 35 yards or less.

The only one I listen to consistently right now is Land and Legacy. Depending on the episode topic I’ll listen to Wired to Hunt, and Deer University. Turkey stuff I like The Turkey Hunter.

As a public land mule deer hunter in southern California the idea of sitting in a stand and waiting for deer is foreign to me. You mean you guys don't have to hike 5 miles up 1000ft to start seeing anything at all?!
