Before and After pics are so helpful!! One thing that I've found in the past year is the concept of decluttering without making a mess using Dana K. White's method. I am super easily distracted. I was always frustrated because I'd pull out a bunch of stuff (a whole drawer, a whole cabinet, etc) and then I'd get distracted and never get anywhere with it, but then I'd go to use that surface later that day and realize it's covered with stuff. The biggest game-changer is to *not* have a basket or box to gather things to put away later. If I find something that belongs elsewhere in the house, I have to take it there right away. That way, even when I get distracted, the space will look better than it did before I started. ♥

I’ve been doing this for 5 years at least. It’s been tough. I spent 3 months on my kitchen and I have a small kitchen. I own a huge house and every nook and cranny were filled with memories and junk mostly. My advice is to get control when you are young. I’m arthritic and it’s been a difficult chore. We want to sell so I rented a dumpster and hired two strong teenage boys. We cleared the attic (full size) one weekend. Trust me, unless you have special children, they do not want anything. Times have changed. BUT, I can see a very dim light at the end of a very long tunnel. One day soon I will come down the stairs and declare that I am done. I like your channel. No nonsense and I like your ability to step back and see a better way. I have a junk drawer that is calling my name.

I'm so glad you gave the advice about using selling sparingly. I often watch "Hoarders" episodes where homeowners have several storage containers full of items they plan to sell online. It would actually take them years to sell that amount of stuff; meanwhile, they're paying monthly rental on the storage containers. Not smart. Set a dollar limit (say $50), below which you wil not invest the time to sell an item. If you really need the money, consign the rest of the items to a local auction house.

I am not a minimalist, by any means, but I have recently done a whole house declutter and unconsciously used some of these principles. I started with the stuff hanging on my walls, then moved on to doing one small area at a time. The first one was under the kitchen sink, because I knew that nothing under there belonged anywhere else. The same went for the bathroom. That way I saw immediate results. In my process I set aside a spare room to declutter to, which held boxes for all the stuff I was getting rid of, and that room got sorted last. That way I could see results in the other rooms and they weren't cluttered up with things that needed to leave my house.

Hi! In addition to starting with the eye catchers, start with the areas that give you the greatest stress: (1) important things that you keep looking for or can’t find - create a designated area (f.Ex. I have an electronics drawer in my desk, and I label the cables), (2) identify the overcrowded designated places that make you leave stuff out on the surfaces (for me, the file cabinet and my dresser drawers were running over, and my bag for old batteries to recycle was full & I put it into my car to drop it off at Home Depot next time). Secondly, to reduce your impact on landfills, do list your things on market place. I even list things at super low prices or for free - so I know the items end up with someone who can truly use them. I find takers for 90% of my stuff.

This week I went through old paperwork (I had water bills from 2016?!), Went under my bed and discovered a small hoarde of gold jewellery I had never seen before in my life - which I am taking to a pawnbrokers. Two bags of clothes for charity, one to resell. Finally got rid of a pair of hideous neon pink legwarmers I'd been holding on to for ten years just in case I was invited to an 80s party 😆

Love the "start with the eye catchers" idea. It's great to work in some visual immediate gratification while cleaning, otherwise if I spend a whole weekend only tackling insides of drawers or closets, I spend all week seeing no visual difference in my open areas and I'll tell myself "Okay this looks NO different, but I DID get stuff done.... I swear! I think??" 😂 great video!

Thank you for these great tips! Recently we've been decluttering our bookshelves. Literally hundreds of books to choose from. In some bookcases we had double rows of books (one behind and one in front) so we 'rediscovered' books we didn't remember having! We started decluttering the "obvious ones" (the eye catchers) : those we could immediately tell they no longer interested us or were obsolete (from the 70s or 80s) or with faded pictures. We absolutely LOVE books so recycling them is the last resort and only for those in bad shape. We've started giving away some to friends who were interested and I'm going to ask our local library if they want any. I want to sell some of the ones in great condition but I'm so worried about failing that I haven't started to yet...

If you have a Half Price Books where you live, I love selling to them. You might not make as much money as you would selling individual books yourself, but you do make some money back and it gets everything out of your house in one go. I’m currently decluttering my books too, and I’m planning to make a trip this weekend. I know it’s going to feel so good to get all the extra weight gone!

@@myconfusedmerriment Thank you for the idea! It sounds great and I would love this, but I live in Europe where it's probably not an option. I'll try to find something similar here! Yes it feels wonderful to see only the books we love on our shelves and some empty space too 🙂

Yes! These are great tips! I started my storage room and it’s a huge project. I have myself three months, knowing I’d have to tackle it in small chunks of time. I’m a month in and almost done the “first layer” of decluttering. It’s so much better! Really like your tip of selecting what you’ll keep and then piling the rest to donate, sell, trash, etc.

It really does make a difference, the best results is when you take large furniture out. I did that with my living room, it looks double the size now. I should of taken before and after pictures. I would schedule time to declutter because you don't want to put everything back, take it outside right away.

Due to some water damage in my bathroom, I'll be working on my bedroom closet first. I know it's strange to have a closet in the bathroom, but this allows you to get dressed after your shower. I am setting aside 2 days a week for 3 hours each to declutter. At the end of each hour I will empty my "put away" box, so I can stay focused on the project. The same is true for paper. I had a recycle box, a shred box and a to file box. At the end of my time or when my brain was tired, I would empty the shred and recycle boxes along with the file box. The room isn't done yet and will be a challenge. I've been in the same house since 1984. The good news is I have 365 days of the 2023 to get it done.

That's why it's best to go slow, like years. You can then see what you need/use over time. Also, the clutter won't come back as easily because you've learned how to deal with it or not bring any in.

3 hours of decluttering may or may not be progress, if all you do is move stuff around for 3 hours, that is churning and time wasting and is not decluttering and not progress. Actually getting stuff out of the house is decluttering.

I make a game of it. Every so often, I Say I Can Get Rid Of 30 Items (clothing or anything). Sometimes, I can do it in a day or take a week. Or, I can get rid of more. I have a bunch of empty plastic boxes in the attic. The attic is such a chore. So, I just go up and pull some things when I get a chance. Little by little, it will be almost empty rather than just doing it all at once. It's the only way for me.
@meganverne
@meganverne 2 жыл бұрын
i disagree with part of tip #3. i dont think making a box of things to put away later is a good idea. a lot of people will make the box and not feel like dealing with it, the longer you avoid that box the more those items become clutter too. i recommend to put things away as you find them or they will most likely sit in that box for a month and youll still be frustrated.
