Hi my names Liam Bennett, Im a music student from the UK and for my course I had to create a composition based on the chief seattle speech, I had everything I needed except a rhythmic/percussion section and without it the piece sounded empty and bland. Thanks to your video it gave me more of an insight into native american drum rhythms as well as sound. Thank you so much :D

Thank you for this video. I find the information of how to care for the drum very useful - to dry, or to wet depending on humidity conditions. I live in a tropical country. A friend gifted us a drum, but haven't been in contact with them again; so I searched, and it looks very similar to this type because of the lacing at the back. However, I don't know what kind of skin it is. Curious to know.

Hello, thanks for the information. Just a question: and about the octagon frames, how do you fell about them?
@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 6 жыл бұрын
Octagonal drums are great....they tend to be heavier than round hoop drums, and have less surface area than a similar size round drum, so are not as deep and rich voiced for same size drums....I hope this helps. Zacciah B www.sunreed.com

Do the traditional laced drums detune over time? If that’s the case how do you tune them back up if they loose tension? Is it also a bad idea to keep them in a case with silica packets to keep away moisture or will that dry them out too much?
@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan. Thanks for the message. Natural skin laced drums respond to the atmosphere around them. But well made ones do not loosen over time. When humid or wet, they soften, and in high humidity may not play. This does no harm. Simply tighten them by putting them in the sun, near fire, or heat....even use a blow drier to tighten them. Once conditions are normal, they play fine again. Conversely, in very dry conditions they tighten fairly tight, and you may want to soften the hide to soften their voice. Sprinkle a little water on them several times over 5-10 minutes, rubbing it in each time, and you will bring out their warm, natural voice. Send us an email at admin@sunreed.com and we'll send you a pdf on care and instructions on this. IN general, because they are natural hide, it is somewhat like our own skin. Just take good care of it, but tighten or loosen it as suggested above for best quality voice at any given time. I hope this helps. Zacciah B, owner at www.sunreed.com

Dear Zacciah, I'm new in drum playing. I would like to buy a drum but I do not know the skin type, I leave in a very humid place, Florida. I travel back to my home in South America, high on the mountain Andes, very dry. What would be the best skin type for these kind of climates...? Thank you!
@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 8 жыл бұрын
+Monica A. Castelli Hi Monica, thanks for the message. Buffalo, moose, or horse are skin types that resist humidity better than others we carry, such as elk or deer. Either of these are good choices. My favorite is buffalo. If humidity takes over a drum, it will dry out when the air is dry, or it is dried near heat or in the sun and play fine again. There is no long term change or damage to the skin. But, in real high constant humidity, the best solution may be a drum like our Remo 'buffalo' drums, that are made from man-made materials. They do have a good voice, and will totally withstand humid conditions. The best choices are the 16" Black Bahia Earth drum (deep voice, but, smaller and lighter weight, important if you have a small frame,) or the 22" 'buffalo' drum, deepest voice. You can view all of those at this link: www.sunreed.com/our-products/native-american-drums/native-american-drums.html The medicine drums are under the 'Sunreed's traditional drums' link, the Remo drums are under the 'simple drums' link. Call or email us directly if you need more help. (802) 674-9586, or admin@sunreed.com Take care!!

I’ve been watching your videos for a while and wanted to ask: In your experience, what is the type of drum that has the most moving a profound sound? I understand that this may not be universal, since everyone has a different preference for sound, but want to know what you think. I have listened to different drum types, including those made from horse, cow and buffalo. Thank you.
@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 3 жыл бұрын
Hello. Yes, this is largely preference based. Tones between skins are generally similar. The biggest change happens between sizes of drums. We have sound files of different sizes of drums on our site here: sunreed.com/native-american-frame-drums/ . The differences between the 18" and 24" drums is a good example. Both produce notes that people really enjoy to sink into, and are moved by.

@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Apologies for the delay in writing you back. It depends on how much hair is on the drum, but typically a drum with a very small amount of hair will sound like a drum without hair.

@ZacciahBlackburn
@ZacciahBlackburn 3 жыл бұрын
@@organicpauyoga8212 Thanks so much. I do not know how this drum would sound. Similar drums we have played would have a good bass note, though would also have a higher note as well. Goat is thin, so when it tightens up it will produce a higher note.

Hi Denise, we've talked by phone to cover the possibilities. Elk is a great starting drum. But if you are called more to buffalo, moose, or another of the medicine animals, this is worthy of consideration. Each drum has its own characteristics of color, voice, tone, etc. You can review them all here sunreed.com/categories/native-american-and-shamanic-frame-drums.html . Blessings!
