✰ Welcome back to another quick How-To video!
✰ Today we're looking at stabilisers, and their importance in leather bag making at home.
Being able to sew leather on a domestic machine is a great way of making loads of amazing products from the comfort of your own home, but because we have to use thinner chrome-tanned leathers that consumer machines can handle we have to make sure that out leather stays firm and upright.
To do this, I reinforce all my bags with stabilisers that either glue or iron-on to the leather so that they keep their shape and strength. In this lesson we will be covering the three main types:
Heavy Cotton Drill - Used for the main body of many bags. We iron this on to the back of the leather to stop the bag from crumpling and deforming. We now stock this on our website: www.rebecca-jane.com/collecti...
Decovil - Another iron-on stabiliser, we use this for thicker parts of the bag that need a bit of extra strength such as the opening of larger products. We now stock this on our website: www.rebecca-jane.com/collecti...
Leatherboard - The sturdiest of the lot, we use leatherboard to reinforce the base of larger bags so that they sit up properly. www.magorthotics.com/product/...
I hope you've gained more understanding of why we use stabilisers in our bags, and the best type to use for every situation.
Feel free to get in touch if you have any trouble sourcing any of these. You can purchase heavy cotton-drill from our store.
Heavy iron-on decovil and Leatherboard can be found on many craft stores and amazon.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! It's my first time sewing with leather and this was the perfect video to answer my question about stablizing. I don't believe we have the "cotton drill" in USA but I'm sure I can find something comparable!

Thanks for your great videos, which I enjoy watching here in Norway! I want to try that fusible Heavy Cotton Drill that you recommend and have actually managed to get hold of a piece for testing in a leather bag, but will you please share with us how to apply it to leather, and maybe to fabric as well? What heat on the iron, and for how many seconds?

Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. Please could you let me know where you buy the fusible cotton drill, and the leather board, here in the UK. I have searched for these two products, so far without success. Thanks for your help.

I’m looking to make a duffel bag from 1.5mm chrome tanned leather that’s quite supple. My goal it to add support to the leather to allow it to keep its volume, but still soft enough to cram into a locker. What stabilizer would you recommend in this situation?

Hi. That sounds like a fun project. I would recommend using the heavy weight cotton drill iron on fusing but cutting it away from the seam allowance so it is not to thick when sewing. We now stock this on our website: www.rebecca-jane.com/collections/all-supplies-tools-handbag-templates/products/1-2-metre-of-heavy-weight-cotton-drill-iron-on-fusing Hope that helps. Any quetions please ask. Bex x

Thank you for the great video. I wanted to know if you iron on stabilizers directly to your leather? I have a customer who wants her bag very very stiff so I was going to iron on some decovil heavy to the leather and then use bontex .05" thick which is like a stiff cardboard box in-between the exterior and interior.

Hi. I'm happy to hear you like the video. Yes that sounds like a good plan. What thickness of leather are you using ?
@sammilus
@sammilus Жыл бұрын
@@rjleatherstudio1368 They do not have the thickness of it, only the weight. It was a 3 oz weight. I would say it was about as thick as the purse you are holding on the video above. I ended doing what I said above and it is stiff. I hope it is what she wants.

Thank you for this video, where do you source the stabilizers.

Hi Charisse. Thanks for your comment. I sell the black heavy weight cotton drill fusing but not sure where you are based? Other places to source would be haberdasheries and fabrics shops near to you. However they can be quite specialist. The weatherboard I normally source from orthodpedic shoe making companies. Any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thanks. Rj x
