The first number which is followed by a W for winter, may be a 0, 5, 15, 20, or 25. The second number is for the viscosity in hot temperatures, and it may be 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60. The most common oil grade seen is 5W-30. For the motor oil with the label 5W-30, the 5W means that the oil has a viscosity of 5 when the engine is cold, which is considered thin and means it will begin flowing even before the engine heats up. The second number 30 is the viscosity of the oil once the engine has heated up, and it isn’t too thin to provide proper lubrication for the components.

I change my car's lube oil even as after 6 months but no contamination or significant viscosity degradation. No volume decrease no avg problem. Just care for your engine and always have a look on leaks under the hood.

I am using shell 10w 40 engine oil in my suzuki alto 660cc whose milage is 38000 and I am using zic 5w 20 in suzuki bolan whose milage is 88000, Am I using right oil or not? Also inform after how much KM I should change? Or I can change the oil type or not?

Sir. Mara mare gari main 10w 40 oil chal raha tha. Is bar mechanic nay 20w50 oil dal diya. Is sa mare gari ki fuel average kam ho gyi hay. Oil abi just 2000km chala hay. Agar main dubara 10w40 dal lun. To gari ko koi masla to nhn ho ga. Please guide

You ignored the important role of air filter, because air filter controls dust and dirt to get into the engine which prevents the sludge and maintain the viscosity. and due to dust and dirt which become more sludge then performance of oil decreases and engine needs new oil.
