I absolutely adore my coach!! I'm not in the USA, I'm in Japan, but they do post the coaches credentials in my ice rink's website. My coach coaches Japanese athletes for ISU competitions, but she has experience with adult skaters of all levels (even beginners like me) and goals. I have 1 hr private lessons with her twice a week, but since I go other days to practice on my own as well, we see each other almost everyday. Talking to other adult skaters in the rink and also parents of younger skaters (kids), everyone has had only highly positive things to say about her, When I decided I wanted to seriously practice figure skating, I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, I analyzed my income and realized I could afford it, so more than budget, I was worried about what you are discussing in this video, how to choose the right coach (I do a weekly group lesson as well, and the coaches are awesome,I love them, but my primary concern was the private coach). Watching your video where you explain how do we know we've found the right coach, -leaving each lesson feeling accomplished- is exactly how I feel after every single lesson I have with my coach. Never too easy, she does push me out of my comfort zone, accompanied by a "I know you can do it, let's try it!!!!" and elements that seem impossible when I first try them, are clearly progressing having her guidance + my consistency being so often in the ice rink for practice (either guided or on my own). She's not afraid of thinking outside the box regarding explanations, if something she explains just doesn't click with me. She can immediately realize when I'm feeling a little tired/overwhelmed, so we take a couple minutes break around the board, talking about skating or about life, then I try again what I was struggling with, and 99% of the time, I can do it after the mini break. She's clearly an expert in her job, but I also enjoy her as a person, as we're together so often and I grow to know her better. I think I definitely won the lottery regarding having a coach who is interested in me and in making me the skater I hope to become ❤

If a skating coach isn’t correcting me and just says “beautiful” from time to time do I need to worry they are not interested in my progress? Do I need to teach myself from videos?

You cannot teach yourself from videos. Figure skating is sport that requires professional supervision. I can't say what is going on without knowing you or yoru coach. But, I would ask the coach for corrections.

We have been happy with our coach, testing and competing with him. We are getting close to the qualifying levels and think we can be more well-rounded with another supplemental coach, but our coach does not seem to want to share coaching. I don’t want to ruin what we have now, but it seems unfair that we cannot explore other options for improvement unless we take the risk of ruining our relationship with our current coach. Any ideas on how to broach the topic? We want to stay with our current coach but have flexibility to use other coaches. Team coaching seems to be how many higher level skaters do it.

That’s tricky if your current coach is unreceptive to the idea. Many coaches do work as a team with other coaches. However, the coach usually prefers to work with certain coaches due to differences in technique. If I were in your position, I would approach my coach about specific concerns in an area (such as spins, jumps, choreography, skating skills) with some ideas of coaches that I would like to work with to improve those areas). I would go in with an open mind and ask my coach who they prefer to work with in those areas. It’s important that the coaches are onboard to work together as they need to collaborate effectively and keep a dialogue with each other if they are team coaching. Assure your current coach that they will still be the primary coach and that you’re not looking to switch, but rather add on with their permission.

@ Awesome advice!! I'm not at a competitive level yet, hoping to be one day, but I wanted to add to my twice a week 1 hr private coach lessons having group lessons where I can interact to other skaters, and have the perspective of another coach (the group sessions at my rink are small, they work with 3 to 5 skaters per coach, so even in group sessions, the coaches are paying attention to what each skater does), and the first thing I did was to ask my private coach which group session with which coach she recommends for me. I followed her recommendation and so far it's worked great! I've even had times when my private coach is hanging out with the group session coach, they see me practicing on my own some other day, I go to greet them/talk to them, and they openly discuss about me, WITH me, and they're clearly on the same page. So I got myself a team of 2 coaches who get along and both are interested in me and my progress, which I thing it's amazing when you work with more than 1 coach.

I have a great coach, but next year in July or August I will be moving to a different country and I'll have to search for a new coach. I feel bad for leaving my coach behind but I need to move there:(((.Any tips of how to find a great coach in a country where I don't have any figure skating friends?

Ask your coach! They may know someone, or they may be able to reach to out to the local club and/or where you are moving to to help give you some options. I do this for my skaters when they are headed to college.
