In this video we show you everything you need to know how to level a floor into a perfect flat and level floor in your bathroom using self leveling floor compound before you tile. Use this for making a perfect level floor for tile, using self leveling floor cement, also called floor leveler. We'll show you how to level a floor and how to apply self leveling compound on concrete floors to make a perfect level floor for tile. The trick is knowing how to use self leveling cement. We'll teach you how to use self leveler to make a perfect level floor. We prefer to use self leveling concrete which sets up fast. this is floor leveling made easy.
All about self leveling floor compound, how to level a floor
To make a level floor for tile you need to make sure your floor does not have more than 1/8" variation of a 6 foot length. You'll need to know how to use self leveling cement. Before your pour self leveling compound, drop your 6 foot level to the floor and you should not see dips more than 1/8" or you need to level floor with concrete. We'll show you how to use self leveling compound.
how to use self leveling compound on concrete floor
If you fail to level a floor for tile or laminate hardwood floors, your tile floor will have lippage between tiles, your wood floor will creak, and you'll void the warranty on your new laminate wood floors. This is crucial to level basement floor for tile. Self leveling floors requires some preparation before pouring down self leveling cement.
Level floor with cement
We flatten down the lumpy concrete uneven floor, before we achieve a level floor for tile with with self leveling compound by first grinding high points with an angle grinder and a diamond cup grinding wheel, hooked up to a shop vac to catch all dust. Then we roll on a cement bonding agent /primer for the self leveling floor compound to allow the new self leveling floor cement to adhere to the old concrete slab, or concrete basement floor. This is required before you pour self leveler on concrete to make your level bathroom floor with self leveling compound.
Then these are the steps you need to take to level floors with cement. You will need a level bathroom floor for tile installation or even for installing hardwood floors and laminate floors. When you are done, if you adhere to the self leveler installation strategies in this video your floor should be perfectly level floor with concrete.
How to use self leveling cement to level floor with mortar
When you are self leveling floors, remember that the self leveling compound should be mixed in 2-3 minutes, dumped onto the floor immediately, and raked into place within 5 minutes, because self leveling floor cement is very fast setting, this is the perfect material if you want your bathroom to be level. All this because your bathroom floor is not flat.
how to use self leveling compound on concrete floor
The self leveling cement then travels around the floor, filling in all cracks and gaps, and leaves a perfectly level top surface, like a glass mirror surface. In a few hours you'll have a level floor with mortar. this is how to use self leveling compound.
Congratulations, you finally know how to use self leveler and how to level a floor, and you'll be ready to level out the bumpiest of concrete floors with self leveling compound. Now you'll have a perfectly level floor for tile. Now you can show your friends how to make a perfectly level basement floor for tile. We hope you learned a lot from this how to use self leveling compound video.

You keep pouring self leveler compound down until it builds up, just like you saw around the toilet flange, it looked like it was running down steps until we filled it up. You just have to put enough foam or caulk around the edge to be able to stop it.

@@theropesofrenovation9352 I still don't know if it matters which end you start on because at the end of the day, you pour enough compound down to bring it all up to level. Normally, the flooring level contractors wear boots with cleats and they walk around in it with a large rake (like a squeegee) and guide the leveler into place, where it finds its own level on the surface, while their partners mix up buckets and rapidly dump them on the floor. You can see how the tub was at the high side and it ran down to the toilet flange at 4:00 in the video, and the door opening 6 feet from the tub was 3/4" down sloped. You could actually see the whole room sloped down like the old original Batman TV series, it was almost comical. Did you see our other video that shows the pros doing it like I mentioned above, our other project where they did the living room and dining room of a townhouse I was remodeling: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a62pi7qWuOC9j2Q.html

I keep watching this video as I will need to be doing the same thing. Some questions I have: 1. What is the primer you used, how do you apply it? 2. After I remove the tile and am left with a concrete floor, do I need to remove as much residue and thin set bits and pieces before self leveling? 3. As I'm in a condo as well, where does the corkboard get applied, right on top of the self leveling? Do you put thinset on the self leveling first, then the corkboard. Does thinset go on top of the corkboard as well for the tile? 4. About the toilet were the screws you used to fasten down all the plastic rings and what were those two gold colored screws sticking out? THANK YOU!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
Hamilton, the primer is necessary to bond new mortar to old mortar, never pour new concrete on top of old without using primer first. It is easiest to roll on the primer with a regular paint roller, and cheap chip brush to get into corners and other areas that the roller does not give complete even coat. As for residue thin set, yes absolutely, it all comes up. At 2 of my projects we brought in pro floor surfacing companies just to jack hammer and grind down the cement floor with their machines, when finished, it looks like a perfect smooth concrete floor, slightly roughened. Once self leveling is dried and cured, 1/4" cork is glued down using cork glue, usually troweled into place, then cork is placed on top of the self leveler, then you tile the next day after glue dries. Then you trowel out thinset onto the cork, and set tiles on the mortar. Look at this other video we did, that shows us troweling mortar onto the cork that we had already laid down in a kitchen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrSpq81ktNWWqWQ.html

I suggest you get MAPEI Self Leveler Plus 50-lb Indoor Self-leveling Underlayment from Lowe's, it can pour up to 1". Just remember when you start going deep, you start using massive numbers of bags, so calculate according to the manufacturer instructions.

I also plan on remodeling a bathroom the same size. I just realized there are two layers of tile, I dont know what is under the tile, most likely concrete I would think. If I remove all the tile, and then I'm down to the bare concrete, what steps do I perform? 1. Paint the primer, what is it called? 2. Use the self leveling? 3. 1/2 inch corkboard? 4. Thin set? 5. Tiles? Is that the correct order?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 жыл бұрын
If you remove both layers of tile, you'll likely find either wood subfloor or concrete. If you find concrete you have to grind down all the tile and mortar remains until you have flat concrete floor, which should be rough textured by then. Next you check level of the floor, if it's level enough, no more than 1/8" variation over 6' than you are ready to tile, otherwise you roll on primer, let dry, then pour self leveler. If you live on an upstairs condo, building codes require you to put down 1/4" cork underlayment before you tile as a sound suppressing material.

Make sure your plywood is nice and secure if not run some screws so everything is tight in place, fill in any holes then prime. Run expension joint around your bathroom for expension/contraction. Some but not all self levelers require to run wire mesh before you put down self leveler check the requirements. Once your floor is level you can use Schulter ditra membrane you can cut that witch scissors extremely light no dust or heavy lifting like cement board. You would put that down with modified thinset and make sure you use ditra trowel for that step. Once is down you can start to tile right away. But make sure you are using NONE modified thinset over ditra membrane.

I have a sloped bathroom floor with tiles already on it. The bathroom floor wood might have warped. Maybe replacing the possibly warped wood boards will make the floor level. Should I replace the wood floor boards or just add this self leveling cement? If later repairs need to be done, will putting cement on the floor make it difficult or impossible to remove the wood? For this reason, I probably would want to replace the wood boards instead of using self leveling cement. Is it preferable in my case to replace the wood boards and tile over the replaced boards?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 жыл бұрын
You could be opening up a Pandora's box of other problems. I would look at the wood floor, and as long as it is not rotted, probably would not change it. Can you verify the joists are not farther than 16" from each other? Are the boards flexing too much? If so you might need to sister up more joists to the existing one to lessen the distance between them and give more support to the floor boards. You also want to check for squeaks, and screw down the board accordingly. Usually the floor leveling can handle up to 1" thick, so of your bag says it can handle it, then you'll be able to level the floor OK.
@vshah1010
@vshah1010 4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffostroff Thanks. I believe the joists distance is fine. The board is probably warped from water damage from a previous event. I'm fairly sure the house wasn't built like this and the floor is warped because of a previous water leak above. It might not have rotted the wood, but it may have warped the floor. I believe the wood is not rotted. The boards aren't flexing. The floor is staying fairly solid. There are no loose or cracked tiles even with the floor sloped. It seems like the tiles have fit into this warped floor without cracking. There are no squeaks, except some minor squeaks under the shower, which I can hear below.These squeaks aren't too bad. It has been used while the floor is like this, so it is probably safe. But I don't like looking at a sloped floor, so I want to fix it.

Lessons learned from my own slc disaster; it doesn't really self level, it needs to ne pushed/pulled into place, get a good mixing barrel and mix it all at once, then pour it all at once, and the system only really works as intended if you are doing a complete room/section-trying to feather edge it wont work. I don't have the patience for that. I will demo the bathroom to the studs and start over. Everything goes even the tub. That's the right way.

Unfortunately we were already remodeling everything on the other side of the tub in for a $90000 condo you can't spend $10000 on a bathroom when you still have another bathroom to do the same thing to.

@@jeffostroff $10,000 a bathroom seems a little expensive. You did do a good job floating the floor looks good and level. Good episode on doing that. James Warren , Michigan

@@jamesw4912 Yes a lot of people get blindsided when they ge price quotes from contractors for remodeling a bathroom so that $10000 cost is my cost for me doing it myself. But a friend of mine just got a quote from a general contractor for $24000 to do their bathroom.

This was not informative. I didn't get to see the most important part, the caulking around the room and toilet flange. Not did you show putting on the primer. This video was waaaaaaay toooooo looooooong to not be informative. Nice job on the floor though. But next time I want to see HOW to do it properly.

11 minutes is waaaaaaay toooooo looooooong long for you? This is the reason why we have these failures that I had to come into fix for this video, because people don't want to take a few minutes to learn how to do something right. Funny how you complain the video is useless because I left out 2 simple steps that a caveman could figure out, in order to make the video shorter, so trolls like you don't come in here and start whining over how much time they have to spend to learn something. If this video "was not informative," it's not the video's fault.

@@jeffostroff I think you took my comment way too harshly. The video itself was great, and the stuff you did show was spot on, so I don't want to get you all worked up over constructive criticism. Further more, I prefer to watch the long videos, because I watch to learn, not to "be entertained" when watching "how to" videos. I'm going to add, just to have the olive branch offered in our conversation, your toilet drain caulking was the only visual I could find in the 7 videos I watched. I did it exactly the way I saw it done in your video and it came out perfect. I'm gonna pour today, and hopefully it looks like yours did when I'm done. Don't be so defensive, the video was good, it just took 11 minutes out of my "single mom doing shit for her own single mom without a clue how to" day. The info I got was spot on, the sound and pic were crisp, and the guy giving the instructions was easy on the eyes. My intention was not to offend, but it came off that way. My apologies. Life has too many nay Sayers already. I don't want to be that chick. Keep doin your thing, it's awesome!

Wow! So wrong. I am no contractor, but have watched plenty of home remodeling shows, plus a little common sense. Anytime you add concrete to a two story house (which you should not do if you have wood sub floors) and it has started to crack, your foundation needs to be addressed. If this is the second floor and around the toilet, it is a MUST that you get down to the sub floor and replace any wet or rotting wood. It may take a little more time and labor, but it will also give you the opportunity to level the floor. Then you have no need for adding all these extras. If you do not have good wood for a support, your new floor WILL FAIL! With the soft rotting wood, add weight of toilet, lever, thin set and tile. I would not stand under this bathroom on the first floor. After replacing the damaged wood, I would use Schluter"s Ditra to the floors. They can help prevent tiles from cracking and you can also add heating to the new floors if desired.
