I can't believe after so many years NONE of the developers thought, hey this would actually be useful to just drag layers to have them be their own new layer and keep their name.

why does this not work for me in 2020 illustrator...it seperates but i cannot drag the layers out of layer 1

i had to select all of the layers under layer 1 and move them out of layer 1...

Update; just incase you still need it, click the three horizontal lines right above the 'layers' section and then go down on the list it shows, to "Release to Layers(Sequence)". Click on that, and everything will be converted to layers, which you can now move above 'Layer 1'. Hope this helps.

THANK YOU! Illustrator is the most unintuitive program ever created (I say 'created'...I really mean 'badly bodged together'). The fact that you can't right-click a layer to see options just astounds me.

I so agree. thanks for saying this. of the three, PS and InD, Illustrator is the hardest for me. so NOT intuitive. (and I wish Adobe would get it together if you had to hold down shift for aspect ratio. drives me nuts also! lol. as an aside. lol)

Thanks for help. Adobe really tried hard to hide this. Users expect to - "Spread to layers" on right mouse click, but it was never intended to work this way :)

but it's changing the name of layers , how do I retain the sublayers name in acutal layers

It is annoying that we can't do that, however I have found that, after releasing the layers, the objects inside still retained their names. So I went through and double clicked the object name, ctrl +c, double clicked the layer name, ctrl + v. Although it seems time-consuming, I managed to get through it fairly fast that way. And then made sure I didn't' build it like that again lol
