How to service a motorcycle - Yamaha SCR950, Bolt 950, V-Star 950

With that said, in this episode I am servicing Yamaha's 2017 SCR950. This service procedure is almost identical for the Yamaha Bolt 950 and V-Star 950 motorcycles. I recently purchased this motorcycle and want to make sure it is properly serviced and safe to ride. I will be checking the health of the charging system, the lights and horn, performing an oil change, inspecting the braking system (fluid level and clarity, pad thickness, actual function), inspecting the tires and valve stems, inspecting the belt drive, inspecting the suspension, inspecting the air filter, etc. I am also going over how to set up proper throttle play and clutch lever adjustment.
While these procedures are performed on a specific motorcycle, they are applicable to a wide variety of motorcycles.

The belt tension should be done with a 10lb gauge. They are pretty inexpensive, and unlike a chain, a belt will keep flexing the harder you push it.

Thank you Jon for posting this video. When you carried out the oil change was the bike on stand or were you able to get to the oil bolt while it was on its side stand? I have googled to see if there is a aftermarket center stand for this bike but it looks like there is only for the Bolt that is available but not for the SCR.

Great question! The bike was on the side stand. The drain bolt was easy to access from the side opposite the stand. Hope that helps!

Any reason you didn't show how to adjust the rear brake?

Great question. As a rule, I don't usually adjust the rear brake pedal engagement point from factory settings unless something feels wrong on the test ride. If it feels wrong, it's usually because someone else has been messing with it, changing it from the factory settings. Looking at the bike, the adjuster linkage has a lock nut towards the front of the bike that needs loosened and then you can turn the adjusting screw in or out to raise or lower the rear brake pedal travel. Once the height is where you want it, retighten the lock nut. Space looks tight on the bike and may require you to do more than that to access everything 😉.

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I was talking about the rear brake pedal adjustment under the right foot peg. When I bought my SCR950 I had to push it almost two inches before it would start braking.

@@bbmurray1 I revised my response after looking at the bike. It seems like someone else was messing with linkage or you had air in the brake line. I check brake actuation on the preliminary test ride. This one was fine so no need to adjust it.
