I bought a Coleman 247 that had a bit of dust and rust, took it apart, cleaned it without removing the character, and am now grateful that I didn't put and LED in it and call it a day. Upon taking it apart I noticed that all the components were of high quality, which is a stark contrast to most of the manufactured products you see nowadays. I couldn't be happier to own something like this, and thanks for showing me how.

I really enjoyed that. I have a 40 year old Palladin, probably not so sophisticated, but you can lift the glass with a lever to light. It still works every time. I’m reminded of the old street markets where the stalls would all have a number of these and in winter they would light and heat and make a wonderful loud hissing sound. Now it’s all at a flick of a switch. Much cleaner and easier but not so atmospheric.

Mr Pulllen you're a star! I've just got a 909 that looks a bit worse for wear on the back of your beach fishing tips video. And then I find you've made this to help me get it going!! The parts you suggest to change are on way too. Fire up that mantle :)

Nice video! There is no need to lift the top off to light the lamp. Just fill the alcohol and light it thru the larger hole in the frame just beneath the glass.

Hey M8, great Video. You can buy that Lamp even these days. I bought a Petromax last Week, pretty expensive but a great lamp! Btw, there is a bigger hole in the lower mantle where you can Film in the Spirit and also do the long lighter through. Just as a little clue. Greetings from Germany

I keep a brass pistol cleaning brush with a short cleaning rod for cleaning the carburetor pipe that houses the needle. If you have it try using some brake cleaner or carburetor cleaner in this pipe to help loosen the carbon deposits. I also carefully polish out that needle assembly with 1200 or 1500 grit wet paper using a light oil and then doing a final cleaning with acetone. You do not want any oil on this needle stem since it can bake on to it from the high heat. This will lead to more carbon deposits building up quicker on this assembly. Great video! Working on restoring an old Petromax that I picked up at a second hand store. The most important thing to consider is the condition of the font when buying these old lamps. If it can hold air and is to rusted out too much on the inside then you are good to go! I have heard of some individuals cleaning out the rust from within the font and then pouring in epoxy paint and coating the inside completely before pouring it back out, oh and one must remove all parts that screw into the font so as to not damage them ( don't forget the check valve within the pump assembly ).

Thanks Graeme for putting this on as I've got an old 500 cp Anchor that my my wife bought me years ago as a birthday present ,I'm not going to say how long ago it was but the price on the box is £32.95p . Needless to say that although the lamp is in very good condition ,after all this time it needs a good service to get it going again ,so thank you for the advice. The best thing I remember when I last used it many years ago ,was the heat it gave off which was as welcome as the light on a freezing cold winters night

This is a great video well done , really informative, I have a Coleman powerhouse dual fuel which I serviced recently ..I run it on Shell advanced unleaded and well its really good . This old sea anchor beats it.though for light and power. I have on order a Petromax HK500 which is arriving for me from Cologne in Germany.. its from the Bundeswehr ( Army ) surplus stocks dated around 1970 s which they sell off from time to time as surplus ... I got it .. so lucky . I.cannot wait to get my hands on it , spares are readily availble here and Germany.. best regards to all

Why remove the hood everytime when lighting the lamp, risking breaking the mantle, when there is a larger hole at the bottom rim for the meths bottle to go through and fill the kidney shaped meths tray, then just put the long lighter or match through and light the meths, least That's how i do mine .

great tutorial Sir, I had one 20 years ago, I've thrown it away cuze it used rare earth radioactive mantels (thorium and even worse, Radium 226) very harmful if inhale and would contaminated with nasty hash all the area when falling appart. But recently they make non radioactive mantels, so, I regret not to have it anymore. But watch out guys, radioactive ones are still available on certain web sites without any logo or specifications notices, only a Geiger counter would reveal it ( I got one) don't use them unless you don't care about your health (cancers) and Neighbors and animals . Nice energetic video, and a lovely lamp. We have many Tilleys so are Tilley biased, but I do like your lamp very much. One thing though I cannot believe is that you have to pull the hood off every time to light the lamp, risking mantle breakage, especially if you had to relight at night in pitch blackness. Surely there must be a hole at the bottom of the gallery to insert your meths tube to fill the pre heat reservoir? Cheers

One alternative way you might want to look into for cleaning really small fragile parts is to soak them in apple cider vinegar for 24 hours. Apple cider vinegar is a natural weak acid. It can get to parts you’d never be able to get access to with your fingers. Plus there’s no manual handling of really fragile small parts. Maybe be a less damaging way to clean them.

too bad the newer ones are not of the same build quality. I have mine for five years and not matter how much adjusting, cleaning, tlc you give it.... it won't work consistently. The first time I fired up my new Petromax I had problems! They are fiddley and if you don't like messing with old Morris Minors and Swiss watches at the same time then the Petromax is not for you! I suggest the non DIY people buy a gas or Electric Lantern. There are advantages to owning a petromax but you will need patients it not as simple as filling it with paraffin and away she goes!

From Caitlin April You need to give your life to Jesus Christ he is coming back. He died for you on a cross years ago because you turned against Gods law and sinned against him including the whole world but Jesus Christ came from heaven and was prophesied about years before he was born from a virgin woman and he never did one wrong thing towards God. For God so love the world that he gave he's only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life meaning won't go to hell but will go to heaven and not just that but will experience lifeless . After he died he rose again from the dead meaning he became alive again and he ascended to heaven and many people witnessed this.❤🌍I had an outerbody experience where Jesus Christ took me out of my body and I was in a heavenly place and he gave me a hug and I felt him and I came to my body and ever since that day I believe that he is alive and he is Gods son because who has the power which is pure and loving and powerful to take me out of my body. I didn't believe that he rose from the dead before. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart soul mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself . to love God is to keep he's commandments
