very comprehensive and exactly what I call a "service", minor checks are done all the time and major ones are checked MOT time. Ignore the haters and thanks for doing this.

I always take the dipstick out too,so when I am putting new oil in, it can displace air from the sump Just remember to put the stick in a position that you cannot forget it & make sure that it's pushed home fully on refitting it. Also, I ALWAYS make a note of the engine oil capacity from the engine specs. I then note what needs to be put in from the marks on the new oil container as the sides are sometimes transparent on some containers, with 1 or 1/2 Ltr fill level marks. NEVER overfill with oil,it can & will ruin the engine.

Thanks Mick, I had my golf serviced today ( just a basic) and it cost me AU$288, ($200 was labor) and am not complaining as I thought that was pretty good. After watching your informative video, I reckon I could probably do this myself. Thanks for taking the time to do this video.

You should always put a bit of copper grease or old oil round the new seal on the oil filter cup oterwise it can chew the seal when puting it back in and also will help the next person to service the car as it won't be stuck in

Just completed a 60k service on my Audi A3 2.0 (170) TDI S Line Sportback. When the fuel filter housing was dismantled to change the filter, the housing and filter was full of a black oily/ diesel mixture. It was diagnosed that my 'Tandem' or fuel and vacuum pump had started to fail; the diaphram inside it had failed and was allowing engine oil to be mixed with diesel which was then pumped around my fuel system. A new pump was fitted the filter housing cleaned and two bottles of fuel additive was put into my fuel tank to clear out any oil residue from the system. The pollen filter you pulled out appeared to be an actived charcol version which despite the leaves and bugs on it, was supposed to be that colour.

Thanks for making this tutorial for free! I found it very informative and easy to understand, I have a question as I'm trying to improve my knowledge and understanding of cars. Do you think these same servicing tips will apply to a petrol powered car? I own a 2007 Volvo C30 T5 for reference, and I'd like to perform my own services on it. I noticed that the Volvo's engine is assembled similarly to a Golf's.

Very good video with handy tips. One tip I have is when you pull the oil filter out take it away to the bench or somewhere else because you left it on top of the engine and made a mess I seen the oil dripping down in around the engine. Just an idea.

Thanks for posting this up, I just have a question, while you make it look easy, on a scale of 1-10, (10 being hardest) for someone with only basic knowledge of cars how easy would it be to give your car a major service ? i.e perhaps more comprehensive then what you have shown here. Also, in labour time, how much time do you think something like this should take ? I am looking at really learning the ins and outs.

So i don't feel okay taking my car to the mechanic knowing that i can fix and service it myself. Well i'm not a mechanic but i can say i'm a car guy. I don't want anyone else to work on my car unless it's something i can't fix my self. I have an 08 mkv gt sport 1.4 tsi golf and i would like to know how often i should service it, how often i should change each filter and fluid. I recently got it and i changed the oil only as my mech told me oil filter wasn't necessary. Should i just go ahead and change everything or wait for the service mileage to come? Really helpful video and definitely gets you into the whole spirit of service of a car! Nice work.

Nice video little bit misleading calling this a service. You haven’t done any of the 200 safety checks that would be done on a service. Volkswagen’s most basic service is called a lube service and even that includes basic safety checks like tyres and brakes. Enjoying your vids tho.
