How to set mic levels (for camera people)! 📷

If you're a camera person and not an audio person - this is how to set proper mic levels for video production. This was based on my How To Set Audio Levels blog post, which you can read here: www.sam-mallery.com/2013/02/ho...
Equipment mentioned or used in this video:
Tascam DR-10L beltpack recorder, buy here → amzn.to/2W67NzN (affiliate link) - I used this recorder with the included mic to record about half of the dialog audio used in this video. Kind of ironic, I know.
Zoom H4n Pro recorder, buy here → amzn.to/3naqm1z (affiliate link) - This is the first recorder you see in this video. You hear it, too, because I recorded the sound for its parts with the recorder you see. I used it with the microphone below. ⬇
Audio-Technica 4053b microphone, buy here → amzn.to/3gFOLK7 (affiliate link) - I used this microphone to capture the other half of the dialog audio you hear in this video. This is an excellent microphone for indoor dialog in video production. It does make whoosh sounds when you swing it around wildly, though.

Great tutorial on audio. Thank you for putting this together. One question if I may, if I am using a recorder like the Tascam dr10 or zoom h1n ( I own both) and a wireless transmitter like the rode wireless go II, which device should I adjust the levels on? Which should I prioritize and keep around the negative 12 db to get the best audio?

For proper gain structure, you set your levels as close to the microphone as you can get first, and work your way on from there. So, if you’re using a wireless transmitter, the microphone plugs into it, so you set your levels first there (tell the person wearing it to speak at the volume they’re going use for the shoot and adjust). Then, if you plug your wireless receiver into an audio recorder or a camera, you need to adjust the input level on the recorder or camera last.
