I don’t own a vehicle, so I got a collapsible crate trolley for convenience. They fold nicely for storage on the boat. There are collapsible crates of various sizes as well and plus this DIY tip, would be super! I hope more divers/dive operators see this so no more bags and crates lying around everywhere.

Instacrate, but they lack the holes and heavy reinforcement. I have both but never use those for SCUBA but other uses.

@@toriless u must have some super heavy gear. My crate trolley can accommodate similar gears as in this video plus weights and 5mm wetsuit. With thinner wetsuit, AL80 can fit as well. The thing costs a fraction of scuba branded bags. :)

One thing I added to my milk crate is a bungee with hooks. I can wrap that around a leg of a bench. Last boat dive I did my crate attempted to suicide off the back of the boat.

Thanks a LOT for the advice. It really helped me a lot. I use a toolbox with an extendable handle and a pair of wheels. I use it to carry all my wife's stuff from the parking lotto the dive site. Since I have two sets of gear in the toolbox, I'm always out of space and nee to cram it all up. Now I added bungee cord to the side for both pairs of fins. I got some much free space that I'm thinking of getting a smaller toolbox. Also, thought that you can use a milk box (like you did) and just put it on anything with wheels. Than you have a solution to carry the stuff from the car and keeping everything organized on a boat.

In Costa Rica we have a larger crate that even fits the fins as well. I can get all my gear including backup stuff into the crate. It fits the fins, regs, boots, wetsuit, mask, backplate and wing with DSMBs. I do like the bungie option though to put over the top to secure everything.

I have been using a rectangular milk crate for quite awhile. When my son started diving I got him one too. For ours I made a series of bungee loops that hold items in against the sides. Items with bolt snaps also clip to those loops. The BCD and fins are last and sit on top. Finally bungees come over the top of everything and clip to loops on the other side. This holds everything in place. I like the idea of having the fins on the sides. I had not thought of using other hardware for attachment points. I may give these ideas a go.

Nice video. I was in Tobermory (Ontario Canada) and the dive shops had nice carts to bring all your gear from the shop to the adjacent peer (for dive boats). This was fantastic! So I bought a garden cart (about 2 feet wide by 4 feet long) and bring it on all my local dives and the pool dives (I teach in the pool). It holds my BCD and my Aluminum 80 tanks (up to 2 of them) as well as all the other gear. When I bring my dry suite I do have to bungie it and the undergarment bag down. It will not fit my rebreather. I created a V- troth out of wood for single tank that I could lay on top of the cart vs pay tank inside the cart as well. Great to go to/from car and pools/short grass with. Not that great hauling into/out of the van, so that is why the tank is put in after on V-troth. I cannot bring this cart onto the boat of course but fine for laving at pool.

Great tips as always - thanks! I have a fishing crate, which most people near me seem to use too, but I never thought about altering it so I could attach fins on the outside and other things on the inside. Going to have a crack at making these adjustments so I can hopefully cut down the amount of things I have to carry for local dives.

Jersey wreckers have been using these since even before I started diving 37 years ago, my first one was metal. Having just moved to Florida I wasn't sure if I'd be laughed off the boat. I am not a fan of the hardware, wingnuts leave a bit of an edge that may cut a diver walking by. These crates are great for protecting gear, especially lights and keeps things organized.

hello James I have been following your channel for some time and absolutely love the practicality of your advices. suggestion: what about drysuits? I’m from hk, the water is generally temperate but if we want to continue diving in the winter (like now) we need to switch to dry. However as you’d imagine, not a lot of ppl from this city have really extensive experience in drysuits. I rmb you are from the uk with good experience in cold water diving. Maybe you can share with us on your experience and give us some tips? from what makes a good value drysuit (do we actually need to invest in high end material if we use it for the winter only?) what gear to go with (for instance, I’m experimenting heavier fins and gators, some of my frds recommend going with Doughnut BCDs), and tips on the p-valve maybe (that’s another mystery and no one around me seem to hand ever had a good experience with it)? what do you think?

Why not just use the bungee's at the top to clip onto, why use wingnuts to scratch other people's gear or worse cut themselves on. Also its better to use tubs with lids so when driving to and from dives the gear stays wet and doesn't dry out on the way home, doesn't mess all over your vehicle, it's much easier to wash wet than dried out salty gear.
