You guys asked how I set up my euro nymphing rig from start to finish, and this is how I do it! It’s a modified euro nymphing rig that favors versatility over optimized performance. This set up will allow
You to dry fly, euro and indicator fish as needed without switching up your entire leader.
Take a look and for more great tips and lessons on euro nymphing check out our euro nymphing course - thecatchandthehatch.com/euro-...

I stopped using tags many years ago. Never felt i catch less. Like the modular leader idea. Thanks for the tip.

Just ran across this video and what a great job on the camera, explaining each step and going slow enough to let it all soak in. I’m going to see if you have other videos on set ups like this. If you don’t then I’m putting in a request for more set up please!!

great video, i liked the idea of the clinch knot going over the first fly, but i kind of lost you after that about switching out and changing the fly after that .To me that was a real key part and time saver.

Hi great video, instead of having the dropper tag do you find your hook ups are as good by having nymph near your leader ?
@Riich87

Finally a video that explains all the lines proper? What flies would you have on dropper then I guess the weighted fly on the bottom
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch 3 ай бұрын
That’s correct in a two nymph euro set up the heaviest fly on the bottom. On a three fly rig if legal in your area the middle is the heaviest so it makes a V in the water column

Rather than tippet rings I use small swivels as they allow your line to swivel meaning less tangles as you do oval casts vrs the normal back and forth casts

I could see this working too but I haven’t tried it. What size are the swivels? I feel like the weight could mess with the rigs presentation

Thanks for the video! I've been intrigued about EN for a while. What rod do you suggest for beginners for EN? (I am fairly experienced with "regular" fly fishing).
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch 3 жыл бұрын
to start out whatever rod you nymph with is fine. If you want to invest in one I have used the TFO BVK 3 wt that converts to a short dry fly rod or extends to a EN rod. Best of both worlds - tforods.com/bvk-fly-rods/

So when you start tying your tippets, your first you said was 12 inches and then said you mostly go to 24 inches. So is each tippet 12 inches long? In video looks like you was ending with two tippets, if you was fishing would each tippet be 12 inches each equal 24 inch total or are you saying each tippet in a real fishing situation be 24 inches each tippet equal 48 inches for two tippets and two flies?

Nice setup,can I get a visual on the foam storage or tippet spool,curious on how it’s tangle free 🎣
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch Жыл бұрын
Its tangle free while on the spool, not always while you fish it of course, but the foam spools work well to hold several fly/tippet set ups for quick changeout.

Still real new to EN and I’m taking it in your video your 1st fly will be the heaviest and closest to the bottom and tied on to 5X and the 2nd fly is tied on with 4X? Am I correct? Thank you for any information and this is really a great video!!
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch Жыл бұрын
For tippet sizes go bigger to smaller the further down the right you get. Ex 3x to first fly then 4x to next fly then 5x to next. First fly is the first fly I tie in and 2nd fly is the last or bottom fly. I’ve always seen this working both ways and being confusing so thanks for asking so I can clarify :) Hope the rig helps you get into some fish! We launched a full course on this on our site if you’re interested too.

Why do you only fish 5 feet of leader before the sighter? It's so tough to cast that fly line when you're using the weight of the flies to cast. It doesn't want to slide through the guides nearly as easy as mono. I can't think of any reason not to just fish a long leader and not ever have to deal with the fly line? I usually fish a 55 to 60 foot leader. Casts so much better.
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch Жыл бұрын
I’ve found if I want to quickly switch to a dry fly I can with a standard leader length and not struggle in my casting. I used to fish 30ft euro leaders and found it helped nymphing but was less versatile if I got into a hatch or rising trout and I only have one rod. I sacrifice some casting ease nymphing for more versatility

Difference is i put the line through the second loop 1 less turn than you did forming the loop on the ring 🤔

Why connect 3x leader to main line ? I think it’s OK to have indicator line connected with the main fly line.

thats an option too, I just like thicker leader up top in case i want to throw dries on it i don't have long 3x along the entire leader

Why do you need a tippet ring?
@TheCatchandTheHatch
@TheCatchandTheHatch Жыл бұрын
Tippet rings simplify the process but you don’t need them. You can do a blood knot or triple surgeons knot too but tippet rings make it fats and allow you to just use one knot instead of learning others. It’s faster switching out rigs as well. From the sighted line you can swap out an entire 3 fly rig with a new one with just one improved clinch knot.

Its a demo reel I got from a manufacturer. Its not for sale anywhere but its been a good reel for nymphing, though it rarely gets used more than a 20 yd run on big fish occasions.

I’m confused. You have 3x leader attached to a larger 2x indicator, then You jump 3 levels down to 5x. I guess for nymphing you don’t have to cast far. General rule is you don’t increase the size of the line, e.g., 3x to 2x, and you don’t jump more than two levels down. 2x to 4x is acceptable.
@patrickparisienne1917
@patrickparisienne1917 2 жыл бұрын
The tapered leader gives you the ease of casting. Remember that the EN cast is really a continuous load oval cast. I suspect the thicker sighted is for easier vision. Tying 5x to a tipper ring from there is standard.
@johnr153
@johnr153 Жыл бұрын
I believe he stated a 9 foot tapered 3x mono leader which is cut to 5 feet. At the 5 foot point its larger than 3x.
