Google Analytics 4 conversion tracking works differently than Universal Analytics. This is a video walkthrough to setting up GA4 form submission event tracking and registering it as a conversion in GA4.
We also review how to set event parameters when you build your GA4 event tag and then register those event parameters as custom dimensions (a custom dimension is 1 of the 2 types of custom definitions you can create in GA4) so the event parameter data is available to you for reporting.

Thank you. this is really helpful. I was able to set up this event (and saw it in the debug view) in Google Tag Manager for GA4. I can see the event (event name) in the User Acquisition report in the "event count" and "conversions" column. But I'm not able to see the event in the "Events" report. Do you know how to get it to appear there?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hmmm…that’s very interesting. To confirm, are you saying it’s not even listed among the other events in the Events standard report? If that’s the case, I’d recommend giving it 24 hours and checking again. Sometimes GA4 seems to be oddly slow in catching up to new configurations, but this is especially puzzling because somehow it’s logging the conversion. Wish I could offer a more concrete recommendation. Fingers crossed! 🙂

I stopped using "Thank you" page views as a method of tracking form submissions because it produced inaccurate results. Here's what I found was happening (3 scenarios): Scenario One: A desktop user submits a form and lands on the "Thank you" page then leaves the website from that page. A few days later they decide to revisit the website by typing the URL into the browser. While they are typing the browser's autocomplete function presents them with the last URL they visited, which in this case was the "Thank you" page. The user presses enter and accepts the autocompleted URL and enters the website via the "Thank you" page. Now even though a form was not submitted, the new "Thank you" page view is incorrectly recorded as a conversion. Scenario Two: A desktop user submits a form and lands on the "Thank you" page. To close the browser tab containing the "Thank you" page they attempt to use [CTRL]+F4, but instead of pressing F4 they accidentally press F5. This causes the page to reload and trigger another "Thank you" page view. Now even though a form was not submitted, the second "Thank you" page view is recorded as a conversion. Scenario Three: A mobile user (using Chrome browser) submits a form and lands on the "Thank you" page. Then they close the browser and go to bed. In the morning, the mobile user opens the Chrome browser and the last page they viewed is reloaded. In this case it's the "Thank you" page. Now even though a form was not submitted, the "Thank you" page view has been recorded as a conversion. While it might not be often that these scenarios occur, they can, and do produce inaccurate results. I've found that many form submissions can be accurately tracked using GTM's inbuilt Form Submission trigger. However, in the case of CF7, I have used a similar method to this => chrisberkley.com/blog/contact-form-7-event-tracking-google-tag-manager/
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
Digital Nova, you bring up excellent points. Of the three scenarios you bring up, do you have a hypothesis about which one occurs most frequently? I have no scientific reason for thinking this, but Scenario 1 is what I had always imagined when viewing the resulting duplicate conversion counts in GA. It's clear you've thought a lot about this and I'd be curious for your take. For the GA accounts I manage that do use thank you pages, I end up using the Conversion Path report in UA to help mitigate the issue you're raising and de-duplicate TY page submissions. But it's certainly a factor. The downside with something like CF7 is that the setup process can be so involved that it becomes a barrier for a lot of folks. Thanks for the article you shared. Believe it or not, I actually made a video reviewing the CF7 tracking process for UA and GA4 last week. It's clear you don't need it, but I'll put the link here in case anyone does: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5iAaN2Hxs-viJ8.html In any event, thanks for watching and for your thoughtful and insightful remarks. Hey man, just subbed to your channel - thanks for putting this all into layman's terms, super helpful! Do you know if there's a way to track Google Forms via GA4? Our form uses file uploads so we're unable to embed it into the site, still wondering if there is a way to monitor submissions + audience behaviour though.

Lee, hello! Thanks for the kind words and feedback. I am a non techie guy who tries to learn some technical (ish) marketing stuff, so I come by the layman's terms approach honestly. Glad to have you here! I did a little poking around about the form tracking through Google Forms. I'm guessing you've embedded the form through an iFrame (like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frKId8x6qa-diYk.html). If that's the case, there's not a way that I know of to track what happens within that in your existing GTM / GA4 setup since the functions as a whole separate entity. Sorry about that. If you do happen to find a way to do it, please feel free to let me know. I bet you would make an awesome guest blogger in sharing your process with others. Best wishes to you. Zack

Hi there. If you've created the event in GTM you don't need to use the event creation tool that is built in to GA4. That would end up creating the event a second time! If you'd prefer, you can use that GA4 event creation tool instead of GTM. Here's a blog I had written showing how to use the GA4 event creation tool that I believe you are referring to: www.rootandbranchgroup.com/ga4-custom-events/ Let me know if that's helpful. Great video. I needed a refresher, and this was helpful. The only thing I'd change is your naming convention. You're tracking page views, not form submissions. Form submissions don't always result in a page view. If you ever needed to track an actual form submit event, this would get confusing when events are triggers for page views are named something like "form_submission".

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Jack. On this particular site, all form submissions do redirect to thank you pages, but your point is taken. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have clearer names for all of this. Best wishes in all things GA4 to you!

First off all thanks for a high quality video, it really helped me a lot! Second, after creating form submit (with page_path) it counts the submitted forms twice. Is it because i already had destination goal on UA? I didn’t saw the event on reports until i created custom definitions. I really would appreciate your response 😊
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, I'm glad the video was helpful! In terms of the double counted goal, I'm not sure without poking around and testing myself. Although, I don't expect it to be related to your existing destination goal in UA. Anecdotally, I have heard that more than a few folks have had issues with GA4 double counting conversions for this. One way you could get around the issue is to create an "audience trigger event" based on new folks submitting your form. This type of event won't double count because it won't count more than one event per user. I recently learned about this and published a video last week showing how to do it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8B7gLJ3tc_Ghok.html Hope that helps. Best wishes! Zack

First of all, this is really a great video. It helps a lot and it's easy to understand too. Just one question about setting up different events for different forms - my purpose is to track specific forms and present them on the report, so I guess I only need to set up different events names, but the parameters should be the same (page path & referrer) and I also don't need to set up new dimensions for other forms...? My understanding is that the triggers for different events should be different - given the URLs are different, but the rest (parameters and dimensions) should be the same as they are meant for tracking the path and referrer. Thank you. 😊
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Christine, thanks for watching and for the thoughtful question. In terms of event names and parameters for your various forms, you have 2 options. Let's say you have 3 different forms for the sake of this example. Option 1 (your suggestion): You can set up 3 different event names. Let's call them form_1, form_2, and form_3. Each of these 3 events will need its own unique trigger to make it fire. Each of these 3 events can have the same event parameters. And you're right, you only need to set up the custom dimension for an event parameter one time. Option 2 (which would also work): You can set up 1 event for your 3 forms. In this case, let's call your event form_submit for this example. This one event would need to fire on all 3 of your thank you pages for your forms, which likely means all of your thank you pages go to the same place or all have some variant of "thank-you" in the URL that you can track. If you go with this approach, you could use one of your event parameters (the referrer, which will show you the page the user was on before the form was submitted) to identify which specific form was submitted. It really comes down to how you'd want to show the data in your reporting. Option 1 might be easiest since each of your form types will be clearly separated into distinct events. Wit Option 2, your total number of form submissions would be grouped together in one event and then you'd need to show the referrer dimension to provide detail on which specific forms were submitted. Hope this helps! By the way, this video shows how to create a Conversion report with your GA4 data in Looker Studio. Sharing in case it's a helpful reference for the future: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7F2oc6nltC9k4k.html

@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. If you have a separate tag for each form, you’d have a different GA4 event I’m your data for each. To your point, this could certainly be preferable in many situations. Having one event like I set up in the video can still allow you to see data for the individual forms, but you’d need to see the data at the event parameter level instead of the event. Your way (multiple GA4 tags in GTM and multiple event names) is likely preferable for easier reporting in the GA4 interface. The caveat would be that if you have a ton of separate forms, this could be a lot of event names filling up your reports. Hope that helps! I don’t think there’s an objectively right or wrong answer. 🙂

Hi Jeff, Hmmm...when you say you "look at the details" that's in GTM preview and debug mode, right? I bet you've already done this, but can you check your GA4 event tag for the form submission and confirm what you have in the "Configuration Tag" field? This will be right below the GA4 event "tag type". It will be either an opportunity for you to select the GA4 config tag you've already set up (with the measurement ID beginning with G-...) or you may have entered it manually. If you can answer that, I can see if I have anything else useful to say. ; ) Best of luck to you. Zack

Hi how do you set the variable for path ? is there any video tutorial you have for this. thanks
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi there. If I understand your question correctly, you just need to access "Variables" in the left-hand GTM navigation (below Triggers) and hit the light blue "Configure" button to the right of Built-In Variables. Then, hit the blue check box next to Path Page and it's turned on. After doing this, you can set Page Path as an event parameter in any event tag by typing the double curly braces --> "{{" and then Page Path before the closing curly braces. Also a side note: GA4 will capture page path automatically. That dimension is called page path and screen class in GA4. I didn't know this when I made the video. Hopefully this gets the job done for you. Best wishes!

If you were running Google Ads for each of these different services and imported the single form_submit conversion, only the number of form submits per campaign would show for conversion actions right? You'd have to go back into Analytics to confirm which pages the form submit actually occurred on?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Carissa, yes, your interpretation is correct. If you wanted different conversions in Google Ads you’d want to set up different conversion actions for the different forms you’d want to track separately. Thanks for the question. That’s an important clarification. Zack

for some reason my Form Submission Trigger is "Not Firing", any possible issues I should troubleshoot?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
Is it firing in preview and debug mode but not in the live container? If it is, that likely means your tag and trigger are fine, but your Tag Manager container code was never published on your site. That's worth checking if you're using GTM for the first time. But if it's not firing when you test in preview and debug mode, there are many other things that could go wrong. Here are a few I'd check: - Does your trigger truly correlate to how your website works? For example, if your trigger is based on a pageview of a thank you page, does your contact form truly redirect to a thank you page? - If so, does the URL path that you've used in your trigger correlate to the actual URL path on your thank you page? - When you're testing, are you making it all the way to thank you page? - Also....is your trigger paired with your GA4 Event tag? And is your GA4 Event tag associated with your GA4 Configuration tag? I know that's a lot of different places to check, but I'd start there first. If you can eliminate some of these for me, I might be able to help narrow it down further. Best of luck to you! Zack

Hello, is there a way to use this method to track all of the forms separately? Currently, we are only looking at the thank you page across all the 3 forms, how do I calculate each form's submission individually? Thank you.
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Hi Norma, the method in this video tracks one single event for each of the three forms, but those 3 events are differentiated by the event parameters so you can see which form was submitted. If you’d rather have 3 distinct event names for 3 different forms, that’s certainly another possibility. To do that with Google Tag Manager you’d create 3 different GA4 event tags with 3 distinct triggers (each trigger unique to each form). You could name the events (for example), form1_submit, form2_submit, and form3_submit. Hope that helps.

Hi Jignesh. The tag you created is the mechanism that creates the event data. As long as you’ve published the container, you should be in good shape since you’ve already tested the tag to make sure it’s working properly. Sometimes it can take 24 - 48 hours for the data to first show in GA4 so I’d recommend checking again in a day or so if you’ve just created it now. Best of luck!

What would happen if someone just keeps reloading the thanks page? does GA keep recording an event hit? or does it know to fire one hit per person/session?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
In my experience, it *is* possible to get duplicate data in a situation like this. I would say a few things though: - It's not that common for a rogue page re-loader to try and reload the thank you page a lot. I mean, that's just weird unless they wanted to just mess with you for some reason. ; ) - If you're looking at the event parameter for 'referrer' (event parameters are set around the 5:00 mark in the video), you can see the prior page the user was on before they hit the thank-you page for the destination goal. If there is not a 'referrer' shown, you can infer that it was likely a situation where there was duplicate data and the thank-you page was merely reloaded. - There are ways to track form conversions outside of thank you pages. Depending on what CMS you're using and what plugin you're using (if the CMS is WordPress). These methods can often be more complicated to set up, but can also improve data integrity. Here's an example of form tracking below with the Contact Form 7 plugin on WordPress on the off chance that's what you're using and you want to check it out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5iAaN2Hxs-viJ8.html Thanks for the good question and best of luck to you! Whats the benefit of using tag manager vs setting up the conversion event in GA4 using Events and Conversions? It seems like tag manager has a few more bells and whistles but I'm able to get the same data without using GTM.

Great question, Emrah. The short answer is I think you're right: doing this without GTM is a fine option in many cases. I actually hadn't been really familiar in doing this same sort of thing only in the GA4 interface until months after making this video here. The slightly longer answer is that in some cases it may make sense to send additional event parameters with your events that GA4 doesn't give you automatically. In any of those cases, you'd need GTM to send in the additional event parameters with your event. But other than any of those cases, you are 100% correct and I'd keep doing it the way you've been doing it. Best wishes and thanks for the thoughtful question. Zack

I tried adding the event form_submit to conversions and start tracking it, but I can't seem to add the same even to "Events" or are the parameters will only show there? do you have a video for that?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Did you create the GA4 event tag in Google Tag Manager? If you did it correctly and published the GTM container, the form_submit event will then show up in your GA4 events report. Let me know if that does the trick for you! Zack

Hey so I'm setting this up for 3 sites and it works perfectly on one of them so far, but the second one that I set up is double-counting "form_submit" events on GA4. Any idea what could be causing this? Both GTM flows were set up identically so I can't identify where it might be firing twice or why. Debug doesn't give any insight, either, as it only shows one "form_submit" event occurring when I go through the form in debug mode.

Hi Samuel, that is very odd. I'm curious, what is the CMS of the site that is having issues and the CMS of the sites that are working fine? I'm guessing it might have to do with something like that, but I'd love to know more. One workaround you could try would be to create an audience trigger based on users who complete the form_submit event. If you do that, and then register the audience trigger event as a conversion (not the original event), that should be able to fix the problem. Based on how audience triggers work they should only count at the user level and not the event level, so it shouldn't matter if the event is double counting there. This could still leave you with doubled event data, but you would have an accurate source of info as well.
@SamuelRuel
@SamuelRuel Жыл бұрын
@@rooted-digital So they're both WordPress sites, and I noticed that the one I thought was working properly is double counting events as well (I had initially misread the data). I'll give the audience trigger a try, but if it consistently doubles events I can also just halve my events and have the true number lol.

@@rooted-digital One more question for ya! The events are now tracking on 2/3 sites in the events section of Engagement (and anywhere else where I want to see events/conversions) but for one of the three, GA4 refuses to add it as an event so I can mark it as a conversion. Note that it tracks in realtime when I use a device or VPN that gets around our internal/dev traffic filters, but then those events are not added into the events reporting. It has been well over the 48-hour window, going on almost a week now since it was initially set up, so I'm really confused as to what could be going on here.

Here is Google's support article on the form submission trigger: support.google.com/tagmanager/answer/7679217?hl=en In my experience it rarely works. Which is why I use a page view trigger (of the thank you page) or element visibility trigger or some other trigger to track the submission

@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital 3 ай бұрын
Hi Kim, that message means that you have not used Google Tag Manager to install GA4 on your site. Do you have GA4 hard coded or installed with a plugin or CMS integration? If you use GTM (the “container” is what you work in within GTM), you use a “Google tag” tag type to install GA4. Your tag will still work, by the way. It’s ok if you’ve installed GA4 via another path.

Hi there. I haven’t seen this before and I’m not entirely sure, to be honest. What is the URL of the .php page that your visitors are on for 5 seconds before being redirected? As long as it’s the same domain, I would expect this to work (although it’s clearly not!). If you can share a little more, I’ll poke around and see if I can find anything that might be useful for you.

What do you do to register it as a new conversion when it is so new it doesn't even push in yet
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question, Adam. There certainly might be a workaround that I’m not aware of, but I think the answer is to just wait (hopefully 24 hrs max) until you see the new event in your event list (in admin property settings) and can then hit the check box to mark it as a conversion. With that being said, let me know if you find another way. I’d be up for learning it. 😎 Zack

@rooted-digital 2 жыл бұрын
Hello there. In this case, your trigger will be entirely different. I’ve done this in the past for another Wordpress website that used CF7 for their forms. Let me know if a video review of the trigger makeup would be helpful and I can make one in the next week or two. You can also check out this guide that I just found online: chrisberkley.com/blog/contact-form-7-event-tracking-google-tag-manager/ Also, something to consider for the future: The WPForms plugin is another great form option if you’re ever working on a new site and considering an alternative to CF7. With WPForms you can easily switch between thank you messages (on the same URL) and dedicated thank you pages as the post form submit action. Best of luck to you.

Hello Bhakti, Thanks for watching and for the feedback. I hope this following clarification helps... In terms of creating an event, that's what we're doing beginning at 2:30 in the video when we create the GA4 Event tag. I don't think that's necessarily new info for you, but wanted to clarify. More importantly, you're completely right that the parameters are extra confusing. That was the single most confusing part for me as well. I made this video to specifically address that portion of event parameters and how to register them as custom dimensions in GA4. Hope it's helpful. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fcmekqxe3a7Spok.html Thanks again and best of luck. Zack

Hi there. I've never used this plugin, but from what little research I've done (here: wpmudev.com/forums/topic/configuring-forminator-form-to-go-stay-on-a-stnadard-thank-you-message/), it seems like you have the option to either use a thank you page upon a successful form submission or just a thank you message on the same page. If you set it to use a thank you page, the approach in this video should work since the method is reliant on the thank you page URL and has nothing to do with the plugin you're using. If you've already set it up, I'd recommend waiting 24 - 48 hours because it can sometimes take some time. Best wishes!

@@rooted-digital For us to track the thank you page it should have a unique url, but for some reason our website don't have that unique url when we submit any forms. Then I asked our website technical support team and they told me that our Thank you page URLs contains embedded link which means it is hidden from the main website URL. They gave me the embedded URLs to use for tracking but still cant do anything about it. Thats why I'm wondering if theres any youtube video tutorials knows how to track embedded thank you page URLS.

I mean from the beginning the customer is filling out the form up until they submit the form our website URL still the same. there's no changes on the URLs, but they told me we can still track those because they were using the embedded link - when customer submit the form eventhough the URL didn't change, internally the website link triggers. But end up nothing. Still can't track. They can't help me to setup the GA4 since they only do technical web support. Dang.

@@cococedie that’s interesting. I’m sorry, I don’t know of anything. I’m sure there’s something out there, but this is an entirely new concept to me. Good luck!

Stupid question: why setup a conversion event when you can simply see how many times each of these pages was viewed inside GA4?
@rooted-digital
@rooted-digital Жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question at all! There are a couple reasons that could make sense to me: Reporting: with a conversion event you can see this form fill in both your event reporting and your conversion reporting. Makes things a little more usable and organized (for some at least) in GA4. Audiences and Segments: If you want to drill down and isolate your form converters to understand them better, the best way (my opinion) would be to create a segment of users who completed the event and then analyze their behavior in greater depth. To do this, the best way would be to use that event as the mechanism of creating the segment. If you wanted to do any further activation of that segment, you could turn it into an audience for potential remarketing in Google Ads. Google Ads conversion tracking: if you're using GA4 conversions in your Google Ads account, you'd need to have this as a conversion action. Any kind of automated bidding strategies relying on conversions (like maximize conversions or target cost per acquisition) would need a conversion action to work against. What do you think? Do any of these apply in your situation? If not, it might be simplest to just do exactly as you've suggested. Thanks for the good question!
