Up north, what should one do during the winter? I just found this awesome little dude and it's almost October and I'm off grid. I think if I let him go hes gonna become food, and I would like to keep him. Any advice? Thank you and awesome video!

I've actually found a baby snapping turtle a few houses a way, in the middle of the path a few years back. Cute as heck, but I let him go back after pointing him a way from the street. Hope he's still growing and getting big.

I love your videos, you have given me great insight on how to care for snapping turtles. I have a question for you about my baby alligator snapping turtle. Some background first. My brother in law brought this turtle home right before winter last year. His intention was to grow the turtle and then cook and eat it. I told him he was nuts then took the turtle from him. I kept the turtle because of it being close to winter. I have cared for the turtle since then. I kid you not , I watch tv and my turtle lays on me and takes naps. So he/she is tame and not showing aggression. It is now starting to warm up here in Missouri, and I wish to put this turtle back in the wild. Where is the best place to release an alligator snapping turtle? Pond, lake, river? I want him to have the best chance for survival. He was the size of a half dollar, now his shell measures about 5 inches across. Is he large enough for release or should I keep him/her another year and then release to insure his survival in the wild? I would greatly appreciate your advice, or a link that can help guide me.

Hey Greg - will you be able to keep them together for life or do you plan on separating them eventually? So much information online is different than what I see you and some of the other big turtle keepers do, and what you guys are doing is obviously working very well and you always seem to put the animals first.

Provide some natural type of cover. Many baby cooters won’t eat unless they feel safe and camouflaged. Provide some real or artificial floating plants and try small worms as previously said, and small pellets

Nice! I'm thinking of getting at least 1 type of snapping turtle when i get my tank and supplies to keep tank animals. I don't really know if I should get a hatchling common snapper though as they're ACTIVELY AGGRESSIVE... they hunt their food! So if a frog or salamander would swim passed them, they may get killed. Maybe even the other turtles in the setup, smh.. I was thinking about hopping up 3 steps and getting a hatchling alligator snapper, but they're boring. Usually just sit around you know? Not as fast as the common I guess.. what do you suppose I do??

i have a baby snapper with a baby painter and honestly they act like best friends. the little painted stands on the snappers back for air half the time. and where ever the snapping turtle is i can always know the painted is right next to him. the painted has only been bit once and that was for trying to steal the snappers food but he learned real quick not to steal food🤣🤣🤣

Not worried at all. Turtles can naturally pass gravel as long as they have a natural diet. Turtles suffering from impaction are heavily fed pellet diets, which clogs the digestive system. I’ve never had a turtle with impaction in over 30 years of keeping

@@GregsTurtleHaven I have been keeping turtles and koi for about the same amount of time, I have just always worried about it because it was something I read once. I am building a 22x36 building for an indoor turtle pond of 8,000 gallons and several small 100 gallon enclosures. I will continue to keep my twenty 125 gallon aquariums with turtle toppers in the house. The reason for the building is I want a pair of alligator snapping turtles like you have.
