Heat rises cold sinks IS true... Without outside influence. The second you're throwing outside forces, say... From fans... You're GOING to overcome the natural settlement of air molecules. SO, as someone else here has said, you ABSOLUTELY can use bottom exhaust, and if you're GOING to place a PC on or above carpet, I'd actually RECOMMEND this approach, so long as you ensure your fan selection can produce the requisite pressure column(s).
@fatidicusaeternus64982 ай бұрын
Maybe but you are also more likely to cause recycling of the exhaust air if the case is in a slightly restricted place and the hot air lingers around the pc

Exhausting air out of the bottom of your case is perfectly fine if you have the pressure to do it. Not really recommended, but it's not totally wrong either. Some cases actually get hotter letting the air flow out of the top.
@imAgentR2 ай бұрын
That and done correctly as you stated they could even keep the vrms cooler as they have air blowing directly over them as opposed to warm air during a top exhaust. But I suppose if you’re not OCing that won’t really matter.
@jamesm5682 ай бұрын
@@imAgentR A lot of compact cases have the air blowing out of the bottom of them through the RAD of the AIO. Some people will have a stroke that a RAD is at the bottom of a case and think it's totally wrong.

So, it doesn't matter whether or not the GPU and bottom fans were pulling air from each other, when done right?
@jamesm5682 ай бұрын
@@HandleIsNewAndBad Valid point, but that depends on the dynamics of the case too. Sometimes swirling air is more efficient at removing heat than straight flowing air.
@imAgentR2 ай бұрын
Agreed. And there are numbers to support this as well. Take the video from Machines and More channel with a NR200 doing a vertical gpu setup with the bequiet silent loop aio-the thermals from a top exhaust were better in that instance, but only by 1-2 degrees C. It was a solid setup still. To the points made here, knowing your case and fan pressures will help. I always prefer giving the freshest air directly to the motherboard to help cool the other parts, like the vrms and the rad handles the rest quite well. But don’t take my word for it or any really. Takes a few minutes to switch the orientation to find out.

As someone that has a business where I build custom PCs, he is MOSTLY correct. With this specific case, he's absolutely correct. HOWEVER, with other cases things can change a little bit. You do typically want to go from front to back and bottom to top, but you also need to take into consideration that you want POSITIVE (or neutral) pressure inside the case to keep from sucking in dust through every hole in the case. In his example he has 5 intake and 4 exhaust fans and the radiator is restricting air on the top 3 fans. This would definitely give the case some nice positive pressure and help keep your case clean. Now if he had a 240 radiator on the side intake and all 4 fans were unrestricted at the top, you could have a neutral or possibly negative pressure case. Now if you take a look at cases that only have 2 front intake fans but have 3 exhaust fans at the top and 1 at the back, now you a case with LOTS of negative pressure. In this situation I'd run the 2 fans up front (which hopefully have a dust filter on them) and only one fan on the rear. This will keep positive pressure in the case but will still allow for heat to rise up out of the top of the case. Your components may run a little warmer due to a little less air flow but the case will stay cleaner longer. You COULD add 1 fan up top for a little more air flow but then you'll start to get negative pressure and will want to clean your PC more often.

My top fan is intake, its about 5 degrees cooler in this config and it has an excellent filter. This fan sits practically on top of a twin tower, dual fan, 7 pipe cooler feeding air right through the fins into the fans. Reason: The giant aluminum brick of cooler and the rear exhaust fan are super sucking all the hot air from the GPU and triple fan exhausting it out the back, no hot air ever makes it past that point. Besides, if it were exhaust my case would become positive pressure sucking in dust from every opening.

The back fan takes care of moving the hot air from the AIO, MB/MEM/NVME as well as the GPU (which has a cooler setup that circulates about 25-30% of it's airflow back into the case) BeQuiet standard ATX size case and all BeQuiet fans with i7 12700k oc'd, 3800mhz-DDR4, RTX 3080 oc'd and 4x NVME & 1x Sata SSD. The argument for "following physics" with hot air rising has been a myth for many years (watch @JayzTwoCents as he's made many videos on the subject). Fans can overcome convection very easily and it makes very little difference. I would say the original setup is actually better from a thermal perspective, as the intake fans at the top have much more open space to draw the cool air in from the top, rather than the restricted space at the bottom to pull air in from under the case. Also, pushing cool air through the rad does have a slight thermal improvement to blowing warm air through it. He also has positive pressure setup with more fans intaking, however the point about sucking dust into the case is correct (which just means more maintenance, doesn't reduce performance). The only point I would say is the fans at the bottom are impeded the same way if they were intake. For me, there are too many fans blowing in different directions, which can cause a vortex effect inside the case, causing air to get trapped and cause overall ambient temps to increase. Better to remove the fans on the motherboard tray and his setup is completely fine.

To follow physics you want it to be relatively pressure neutral. Look at your fans flow and do the math period. Hot air does rise but putting your fan against that direction doesnt mean it cancels out they arent neutral forces. The other thing to consider is what your PC is on. If its on carpet make the bottom exgaust otherwise dust build up can be more of an issue.

Mind you my CPU isnt known for running hot (i5 11400f). Most efficient location for your fan on the cpu cooler is closer to the front of the case set to intake. If you wanted to you could put it on the other side exhausting hot air from the cpu, but it will make the cpu run a bit hotter. You can tell which side of the fan intakes airflow based on the fans support beams on the back. The face of the fan will always suck the air through the fan(unless you have reverse blades) and the back of the fan with the support beams will always exhaust the air In other words, logo side is intake in your case

Eh, I'd say leave the rear fan as intake. Nothing keeps dust out like positive pressure. Also, a bottom intake isn't much better than a top intake , it just ends up sucking in all the dust that would've landed around the case. If you keep your case on a small platform not much larger than the case itself, or tucked away in a similarly small cubby, then it does provide better airflow, but if you have your PC out on top of your desk then it's going to be sucking in almost as much dust as a top intake.
