After picking up my new Canon Pixma PRO-100 from a local seller I decided to fully document the setup, installation and basic printing process using the built in Printing Photoshop Plugin, simply letting the plugin handle color and then using full color management using the correct Canon ICC profile and turning OFF color management in the PRO-100 Driver. Either way the results were amazing. Its hard to find the words actually!
I still have a lot to learn about the use of the Printing plugin and it's features. I am also currently testing other ICC profiles for non Canon Papers as well as custom profiles for Canon papers. I am still learning the naming convention of Canon ICC profiles.
A second video is in the works covering more advanced aspects such as printing through other applications such as Lightroom and Qimage and I will then discuss in detail where we are in the subject of possible 3rd party ink and or cart options for this beast.

what a great tutorial, maybe one of the best if not the best, Im not talking just printers but every single tutorial and review video Ive seen, from a-z the explanation and hands on is superb, nothing was missed. Experience and experience its what you have Sir, I just bought this printer on a deal with a dslr and the printer came to be $100, bought it from someone but its brand new, close and sealed box, just have to register for warranty. My first search that appeared on KZfaq was You Sir and Im not searching for anyone else about this printer and maybe any other printer that I buy in the future, You are that good and I'm sticking with you for my printing needs. I will follow the video again tomorrow to connect my printer, I feel good I can do it with your help. Gracias for your time in this exelent video.

Thank you for this video. I had no problem following the instructions up to connecting to the wifi. Only reason why I had a problem was because Google Fiber modems don't have source buttons. I had to call Canon and have them walk me through connecting with a USB cable first, then once everything was set up, disconnecting to go wireless. I'm up and running!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
The driver instructions clearly state that you first install through USB and them WiFi followed by removing USB. WiFi can produce data transfer problems with large files. Nothing to do with your WiFI but with the printer's instead. I would highly recommend USB if you can 100% of the time.

I got my Pro 100 when I purchased a Canon camera. I liked this printer instantly when I printed my 1st image. Just so you know, I profiled my monitor and created custom printer profiles for each type of paper using Color Munki Photo. I'm liking the images from this printer more so than from my Epson R1900. Of course more printing and testing is needed, but I really dig this printer. I think to pull out all this printer has to offer, one needs to profile their monitor and printer. But as shown here you can use Canon's ICC profiles and get really nice images.

Jose Rodriguez thanks for the video, very clear. I am now facing the expected cash expenses for the expensive canon ink. On the other hand what is the point of having a good printer if I am going to use cheap low quality third party inks? So I wonder what has been your experience in using these brand Precision colors. Is that so good as Canon’s at better prices?

Bought the pinter last week. Can't wait to get it! Watching this video to help prep me for the setup process so major thanks!! Love your videos. Just as an FYI, with the WPS option. Essentially, you push the WPS button on your router (if it has one) and on your printer (if the software doesn't do it for you) which then connects the two devices together. Kind of like pairing a mouse, or wireless headset. However, for security flaws within how WPS actually works, it's typically not recommended. Though, probably not really much of concern for an at home application. However, the option you chose to connect through WiFi via the USB cable was the better option anyway.

Jose, Great video. I bought this printer a few months back, and am totally in love with it. However, it was your comment about the XPS version of the driver that offered a useful insight. Thanks! I ran across your video on setup and installation while exploring refillable carts, and after having just purchased a set of inks and the new (it appears) resetter - so, if I understand the system correctly, no need to disable ink level monitoring. Have you considered a video on refilling ink cartridges for the pixma-pro 100? NurseBob

Jose, thank you very much for sharing the details in using the Photoshop printing preferences, the Canon plugin, and all the details with the black and white options, as well. I've only printed in a traditional film darkroom. I was/am still a little overwhelmed with all the settings in our digital realm, but you've provided me with some very helpful starting points. Do you have any black & white videos that are Pro-100 specific? Thank you.

After over 600 videos I sort of lose track but I am sure there are some there. Just so you know I also came up trough the darkroom. Wince age 11. I was a photographer/lab tech in the Army for 22 years since 1967. Then worked as a medical photographer after retiring from the military. Check out my film photography section. And by the way digital photo printing workf!ow is not really printer specific.

Found what Canon refers to as the back tray is the top. The back is the manual feed!
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
"Top" feeder is called the Rear Feeder and technically it is at the rear of the upper surface. Manual can be either in the front of on the rear wall of the chassis which is where it is in this example. The confusion comes with the translation from Japanese to English.

Should I wait to setup my printer until I get the computer monitor calibrated? Also, what calibration system do you suggest? thanks djl
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to start printing when you get you get your display calibrated then you can just wait.editing on a non calibrated monitor is totally useless If you intend to intimately be printing your images. I would not consider anything less than x-rite hardware for your monitor.and please realise that in the future you are probably going to need custom profiles for your papers, specially if you transition to Third Party Inks. I offer a profiling service, Hint Hint!

Each has their own characteristic advantages. Pigments will last a lot longer and will not fade as quickly as some dye inks.] However dye prints will have a lot more POP that the equivalent pigment prints. Each has it's own niche! CANON CLI-42 ink is quite excellent in the longevity department. They are claiming 100 years under glass. That's way more than I need if you ask me.

Your videos are good information. Thx. I am actually meeting tonight with someone from Craigslist who has this printer for sale. My Epson 1400 (my dream printer: inexpensive yet nice.) has clogged print head. I gave up on it after trying remedies and sending it off. I would love to find some use for it other than disposal. Such a waste. I love the options of a wide format printer. But just don't use it often. I am using Epson 837...which is my first Epson which does not have the straight through feed. I would always opt for the straight through feed if available. CD printing is important; and I don't look for that to be a feature on new printers. I have no knowledge of using printer profiles. Even the settings in Photoshop are confusing to me. So I hope I am not making a mistake in buying this Canon Pro 100. Also I have never done screen calibration. I have always used after market inks with all my Epsons. The 1400 is the only one I had trouble with. Any advice on after market inks for the Canon Pro 100?

Be aware you will be modifying your original carts for refilling and should never ever consider aftermarket carts or CIS units for ANY CANON printer. " never ever consider aftermarket carts or CIS units for ANY CANON printer." I appreciate your telling me that as I had already begun searching for refillables. I'm sorry they won't work for this printer. Modifying the OEM carts and worrying about how to reset the chips sounds daunting to me. I will make use of your info. Thx
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 8 жыл бұрын
+Shirley Ande Not at all! It's actually quite easy but simply it is the best way to go if you want to maintain quality and still be able to afford the ink. And that applies to just about ANY printer. Once you modify the carts ( about 3 minutes each ) you are set. The resetting simple requires to have a resetter ( Precisioncolors sells them along with the kit or alone - best purchased as a kit ) and it only takes about 5-8 seconds each time. Look at my recent video on modifying the PRO-100 carts. You will see that it is not that daunting. The reason that it is not recommended that you use compatible carts of any kind is that the sponge and the outlet seal is patented by CANON and nothing you can get in aftermarket can legally duplicate it. These two items as the HEART of the OEM cart and accounts for its 100% reliability. So please do not be tempted to go that route regardless of how attractive the offers sound or look. Been there done that!!!!

You caution to not let the cartridge run low. Are you alerted by the Canon ink monitor? And, with one always running low, then you would have to swap out the entire set of carts often - right? And do you then refill all the carts at the same time. And how do you store them safely until you need to swap again? so that they don't dry out..?

Great video Joe, thanks. I'm not sure if I understand if the color cast on the first B&W print resolved itself upon drying and/or whether there was any difference between the two B&W prints at all? My new Pro-100 prints beautifully but about a minute after ejecting the print, always goes through some mechanical gyrations that don't sound like a head cleaning but more like it's trying to feed another sheet, i.e., the feed rollers are turning, maybe. Only sending 1 copy and there are no error messages. Sound normal? Ink usage doesn't seem excessive.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 8 жыл бұрын
Back then when I did that first print I only noticed the slight warm cast on a B&W which completely went away after using a custom profile. The sounds you heawheawr aftrer printing are purely mechanical. The are also the purge pump running clear out the purge or docking station. Make you print something before a period of 60 hours total idle time or a real cleaning cycle will run before it will next print. I did two videos on that.

Hi, I watched a few of your videos last night. Very informative! It seems like you have a lot of printers. I'm strongly considering buying myself a printer. I've always loved photography, but was discouraged from becoming one professionally by my dad. I have a 5Dm3, and have a good number of gorgeous photos of my kids that I'd like to print for my office. I recently visited a friend with a pro-100 and was very impressed by how great his prints looked. Of course, now I'm lost in research, not sure what to get. They're practically giving the pro-100 away, which makes that very attractive. But, should I get an Epson? Is pigment ink that much better? I've also been looking at the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, and Stylus Photo R3000. Space is a factor, and so is price. I live in NYC. My local photo shop said the 3880 is currently on sale for $829. and I noticed Epson has a $200 mail in rebate on it, though I'm not sure if that's in addition or not. Canon has a $300 rebate on the pro-100 now, so I could get it for $98. I would love to hear your advice. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Thanks so much! Also, I'm fascinated by your ink-harvesting! I want to do that, too!

+Gerardo Becerril It is a super difficult job to get to the pads which I assume is what you are talking about. It requires a complete tear down of the printer. When I follow your steps in this video and the previous, my black and whites still look hint green tone & not bright enough (highlights were low). I have Color Correction set as "none." I use the Canon 1/2 Photo Paper Luster as that's what I have. I used the Plugin through LR and did not check Black and White Photo box. The photo had some deep dark blacks and after it printed I noticed a few spots looked pink like a finger print almost they were small but it was a few places in the dark blacks. When I also attempted to do it just through LR with out the plugin, when it showed me a preview, the preview was waaaay on the Cool side so I optd not to print it to be safe. I use the same settings besides your custom profile. Will let it dry over night and look at it during daylight. Any thoughts? Thanks for the videos though!

criminalmane IS your monitor properly calibrated?When you print to B&W do your B&W convert inside PS or LR. Yes you will NOT get a perfectly neutral B&W in most cases unless you have a custom profile for that paper ink printer combination. That will also be the case even with the higher end printers.Are you using the PSP Plugin? If so you can run a pattern print and then choose the one that produces the most neutral print. Apply the settings it suggests, and print your main image with those adjustments. That should come out as perfect as the sample you chose for the pattern print.Joe AKA Jtoolman

Jose Rodriguez Yes, I have calibrated settings for my Dell 2405FPW. I convert to B&W through LR or some times Silver FX Pro (Ive only used this a few times). I have not printed a color photo on the printer yet. I just got it this past Friday. I would think if you converted a photo to B&W it should print B&W with no other color tones unless specifically done with using a Tone Curve of some sort. I haven't had a chance to try a pattern print yet to see which looked better. I also used PSP Plugin as well. I've printed through PSP and straight through LR. I will try to do a pattern print soon. Friend of mine had some photos I took for her printed through Adorama so I also want to see how they turned out as she had some B&Ws printed to see if they look different. Any way I can send the image to you to see how it displays for you? Thanks again for your help.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 9 жыл бұрын
NO just because you convert to B&W does not mean that the printer will use only B&W or be neutral or be consistently neutral throughout the complete range of tones. That linearity of neutrality or over all color tone or cast is handled by the PAPER PROFILE and not al t all by the image editor or what you may have done to that image. Black to White tones are composed of ALL colors of ink, though predominantly they will use a lot of the gray inks. Any shifts along the line are corrected by adding a bit of this color and that color. For example is a certain shade or gray is perceived as a bit on the blue side, the driver will add a bit of yellow to neutralize it. My PRO-100 did not print neutral out of the box I had to create a profile and then and only then was I able to consistently print neutral. Joe AKA Jtoolman PS: I have a profile I can give you and see if that works for you. You will have to turn color matching to NONE in the driver and then use it though LR. Did you intend to send a print to examine?
@criminalmane
@criminalmane 9 жыл бұрын
Jose Rodriguez Great explanation thanks! I went back and went through my calibration settings and played with my Gamma on my monitor last night and everything seems spot on. I'd like to try a profile out to give it a shot. I currently have Color Matching set to None using the current paper profile for Canon Luster 8.5x11. I was going to put a file up for you to check out or possibly able to send a print.
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 9 жыл бұрын
Try the profile whose link I posted. Then compare. So you have not really calibrated your monitor with a hardware based calibrator? You are simply using the gamma adjustment? That will sort of, get your luminance adjusted. A calibrator will linearize it perfectly for color as a well as luminance. meaning that it will be correct from the darkest possible step to the brightest one. Image printing at home is not a cheap hobby to get into. There are plenty of hidden costs such as the calibration equipment that you absolutely need if you truly want accuracy between monitor and print. Joe AKA Jtoolman

My HP Photosmart 8250 printer just died after 9 years and although it was pretty good for the price I may want to get a somewhat nicer one this time because I like to create all my own business marketing materials and I'm thinking of selling prints of my artwork and putting my images on jewelry. You have a new subscriber! I was also wondering whether this printer will take cardstock and polymer shrink sheet? It looks like it has incredible picture quality, but the set-up looks pretty technically complex, especially identifying which drivers are which! I hope once it's set up it doesn't require that much clicking around and selecting, and that it won't give alot of error messages. I noticed it ran into a roadblock with some of your editing programs and you seem fairly experienced with this kind of equipment. Is it compatible with Gimp? Is the ink in these more advanced models permanent or does it still run if a drop of water falls onto it. Also, how do dye and pigment in inkjet printers differ? Is one more permanent than the other?
@cheo1949
@cheo1949 9 жыл бұрын
I am not entirely sure whether it will take that type of material. You can print to this printer from just about any program that supports color management. Dye inks will always look brighter and more saturated than Pigment inks due to their transparency. However Pigment sink will gain by having better inherent light fastness. Having said that the CANON Chromalife 100 inks OEM are supposed to have a 100year life span under certain conditions such as framed behind UV glass and in a closed album. But NOTHING is fade free. Even normal Wet Process photographs suffer from fading. In a way Ink jet is more archival that wet prints depending on how thoroughly they were washed.

You skipped over the importance of screen calibration and printing a test image using a given paper type and using the values of the best match of the test multiple photo print out to calibrate your printer to your monitor as closely as possible. Ah!You did mention it before printing the B/W image which was beautiful!

+Joseph Taibi Jr. Most folks do not have access to screen calibrating equipment as the PRO-100 ( With the Rebate ) will likely be the first printer capable of great photo prints. So they would not have any knowledge of color management, at least not yet. But yes I do mention the importance of Calibration of the monitor. Thanks so much!

Good day Mr. Rodriguez. I print photos for sale, benefiting a local charity here in the Philippines. I am having a problem with my Pro 100 (I use only Canon Original Ink). I am seeing light spots in the 100% black areas of my black and white prints. The spots are large like a finger print and appear exactly in the same spot, print after print of this one portrait I am working on. The spots are about the size of a finger print, but I handle my Canon Pro Luster Paper wearing disposable gloves and try to touch only the paper edge. I do not see this problem on any of my coloured prints and only in the 100% black areas of my B&W prints. I thought maybe it is an artefact in the photo file, but can see nothing on my screen @300% in LightRoom. Have you come across this problem before Sir?

+Suzanne M Gorenflo Thank you very much! I like what you are doing! I am firm believer in refilling and reusing perfectly good original carts. The less that goes to the landfill, the better we are off! Joe

Hi Jose - Your videos are so valuable! I am an illustrator and would like to start printing my digital artwork - mainly on thick cardstock, greeting cards, multi-media paper. Do you suggest think printer for those kinds of things or something else?

You can not print on plain care stock at all with ink jet printers. Only inkjet coated photo media. You will need a pigment ink printer to insure your products last and not fade. Do wider what the largest size prints will ever brand then get the next largest size. Epson Canon are your choices. I am not going to even attempt to suggest which model to buy, it would be like me telling what car or shoes to buy. Look at videos on YT and the Canon and Epson sites and see what appeals to you and you wallet. And remember it is it cheap to print at home and since I assume you will be selling products you really should only be printing on original inks and papers.
