I completely agree with you and you're the first person I've agreed with on this subject. In fact, I just finished asking someone if, after adjusting drag using his scale, would he put that reel on a different rod and call it good. It shocks me to learn how many people have no idea how to set their drag or the effect their rod action has on it. That 20-30% bunk might be okay to the IGFA guys out in open water but it's useless to bass fishing around structure.

I went to Peconic Bay behind Shelter Island near Jessup Beach and was catching Porgies, Fluke, Sea Robins, Sea Bass (Throw Backs, out of season) and Mackerel. Was using clam and along came some schoolie Stripers. You have to adjust your drag on the fly. Hard to change rods when you're hooked up.

I just got the accurate 400 tern reel on a Terez shimano 7 foot rod. Have u ever used the tern if so what do you think about it overall ?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 5 жыл бұрын
I actually haven’t had my hands on a Tern yet personally, but a few are on the way right now. I have total trust in by brothers at Accurate though 👍👍 I’m sure they are bad A$&. I love that they squeezed the main gear with twin drag plates. That’s evil.

Just found your channel and subbed. Since you are in the NE you fish the same kind of fish I do. I am just south of you in NJ and I have always wanted to know how you feel about having a bay boat up here? Can you do all the fishing that you could want or do you find yourself ever wishing you had a different style boat for up here. How far off have you taken her offshore? Sorry for all the questions but I have a big interest in possibly getting a bay boat over a larger CC. Thx

No problem on the questions brother! I have been in a Sea Pro Bay boat since 2003. We used to run out of Oregon inlet in Dec and run over 50 miles up and down the beach and found ourselves many miles out nearly every fishable day. I honestly don’t think that a FISHABLE condition exists that would be more more dangerous for this bay boat than a deep V. If it’s fishable for a deep V- it’s fishable for this bay boat. Sea Pro’s are more of a hybrid with their super sharp entry point and flare. If you are out in huge seas you are gonna be in trouble in any small boat, but I don’t feel any less safe in a Sea Pro Bay boat than I would in a deep V of the same size.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks for that info. I lived in FL for 4 years before coming back to NJ and I had a flats boat down there and I had so much fun. Tarpon reds snook cobia trout galore. Now I was wondering if the bigger bay boat would still be useful up here or is it still a southern style boat that has its place down south and not up here. Fuel economy, trailerable, no slip fees would make it way more affordable compared to a 306 Grady white canyon I am looking at. ( used ofcourse) I would be able to target... stripers, blues , weakies, Tog , seabass, flounder. Not too bad I must say. I am enjoying your channel especially since you are right up here where i am and fish the same fish in a bay boat so I can get an idea of what it would be like. Oh also love those Simrads. That's exactly what I will be installing whenever or whatever boat I get. That's atleast the one thing I am sure of so far. Boat not so much lol Hey thx for the reply I do appreciate it.

Could i catch a 40 pound fish with 20 lb drag
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. We rarely set our drags higher than 7-8lbs. A 40lb Striper is weightless in water.

Actually with proper techniques, people in China use reelless rods (line attached directly to the rod tip) to fight big carps over 50 pounds. This equalls to drag set to infinity. So definitely it's better to set the drag too tight than too loose.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, but they are using lines and rods rated 10X heavier than what they are catching. That’s the same as me using 300lb test for 30lb fish. That will never happen. If you use lines and rods rated for less than what you are catching (weight-wise) you should NEVER set it too tight.
@leodelonix155
@leodelonix155 2 жыл бұрын
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERSOf course we shouldn't set the drag either too tight or too loose. Actually I am supporting your opinion in the video. Because the technique you are showing in the video is similar to how to fight the fish using those reelless rods: you let the backbone of the rod start to bend and keep it that way. The rod itself will serve as the drag to wear the fish out. Those rods are much slower than rods we use here and more flexible.
