FYI you are NOT increasing spring rate or stiffness with increased preload. You are just reducing droop travel. And you want to measure preload by measuring the spring, not the shock body. Also, with zero preload, a new spring will settle a bit after driving so you will end up with a lose spring and will have to adjust again and add some preload. This is why most coilover manufacturers recommend a very small amount of preload when installed new. Hopefully people read this for the correct info!

It also can very by spring type. I've seen what he says be true by one brand but different by another. Not all springs are created equal haha. But for my car I actually had to make the rear right be a quarter in longer to have a qual ride height. But my car is fwd with a panhard and solid rear beam so there is a leverage difference. Left to right. But just like you learning as you go.

Spring rate only changes if you have a progressive spring not a linear spring. So adding 4mm of preload to the spring doesn't change that in your case. BC does that for sag or settling of the coil so that you dont lose preload and have it loose and rattling. Pretty standard setup.

The- preload is gone when lowering the car down on ground with them mounted. So "pre-load" adjustment would for final be to stop the down movement before the car slams the tarmac on speed bump. You can really preload those coilovers when you have the height adjustment on lower end. But the preload must be so tight that car stands on the ground with fully expanded shocks. It will get uncomfort dince the car can’t move upwards. And downwards are restricted much. On mine i have notised that rear coulovers are adjusted so it can’t touch the ground with load. Better with springs banging than bashing the car in the ground(as ling as upper shock mount handle it. But i have noticed some range problem in uneven roads. So i are going to check if there is more margin downwards to the ground. If it is already close enough i let it be that way. Driving normally might cause 1-3 bashes( bottoming) a year up in the shock mount. But 180-200kph can raise consentration levels and conserns on uneven roads. There should have been a stopper with a coenic shape absorbing the bottoming. I am going tho compare the measurements between the right and left side on my rear. Because its on the left side it bottoming in the spring. So im going to match the right side. So there are some more things to think about with those coilovers . But its better than groundslamming. Cars might have different groundclearance with same coiloveradjustments. Design/weight differences😊👍🏻

With Swift springs, you are NOT increasing spring rate when you compress the spring, that is literally the benefit of Swift, as they are not a progressive spring, they are a linear spring.

You are not increasing the spring rate with linear springs. Adding preload reduces the droop when the car is lowered on the springs effectively making the car higher for height.

you don't understand what preload is for. Each shock is valved with a preset spring rate, as you order the shock set for your specific car. Preload is for the weight of the car. Different front and rear.

Don’t mean to sound elitist or anything. Been doing a lot of research and learning, and what most coilover companies tell you about adjusting ride height is wrong. Ride height should be adjusted via the spring perch. If you find you spring is loose get a helper spring. Preload doesn’t matter. The bottom mount should be adjusted to give maximum shock stroke without your tire hitting any part of your fender wells. You can measure this by removing the spring and just installing your shock and tire. There’s a reason big a lot of companies don’t have adjustable bottom mounts on their coilovers. KW, Penske, H&R, and a lot of other true racing brands don’t have adjustable bottom mounts. Research and demand all these coilover companies give us proper suspension set ups. They’re just trying to make a quick buck out of us and your car may or may not handle better.
@4bangermafia
@4bangermafia 3 жыл бұрын
Not entirely correct. I have found that adjusting that way as well also decreases shock travel. The bottom line over adjusting any coilover will take it outside of what its designed for. The twin tube designs that those companies are using(Penske or Moton) have a longer stroke. Thus unlike monotube/inverted monotube they have more travel that can be given up. For an inverted monotube design I would say its better to do adjustments at the base. Not to mention you can also do some adjust via preload as well. That's why you can do both.
