See thepodcastersstudio.com/mixminus for a complete walkthrough guide for setting up this mix-minus.
Want to record Skype calls for your podcast interviews? This is how you do it.
Recording a Skype conversation or any other VOIP program on your computer using professional (XLR) microphones with the ability to mix in other sounds all without having the person on Skype get a feedback loop of their own voice, requires you to setup a mix minus with your audio mixer.
The basic concept is you want to mix all your audio inside your mixer which includes you Skype caller then send that audio back out to Skype minus (without) the Skype callers voice.
To do this you need a mixer with Aux sends. This is a specialized output on your mixer that allows you to select which audio sources coming into the mixer get sent back out.
In this video the setup is as follows:
- My microphone (Heil PR40) is plugged into channel 1 via XLR cable.
- My iPhone is plugged into channel 5/6 via a stereo 3.5mm to Y cable (1/4" left and right) for sending sound FX into the mixer.
- My computer (Skype) is plugged into channel 7/8 coming from my computer's headphone output using another stereo 3.5mm to Y cable.
- The mixer is sending audio to the computer (Skype) via Aux B using a 1/4" to 3.5mm stereo cable.
To achieve the mix-minus setup, the Aux B fader on my microphone's channel as well as my iPhone's channel is turn up (set your fader at whatever level is good for Skype. I like my Skype audio meter to hit about 70 to 75%).
The Aux B fader on my computers channel (7/8) is left in the off position or turned all the way down so that no audio is going out of the aux send. This is the minus part of your mix-minus. All the audio in the mix is going out to Skype through the Aux sends, minus the Skype caller's audio on 7/8. If we had this Aux send turned up then the person on Skype would hear their own voice back because we would be sending it back to them after it came into the mixer.
In this video's setup, each channel that we are sending audio out of the Aux B must also have its main channel fader turned up as well or else the audio won't leave through the Aux because we are using a post-fader.
It's much more complex sounding that it really is. Take your time and walk through each step. Skype has a test calling service in your contact list that will allow you to make a call and receive audio back so that you can test your setup.

Thank you! The last video I tried to watch about setting up a mixed minus was pretty much an advertisement to buy one brand of mixer. There was nothing in there about using any other mixer to set this up. You told me how I could do a mixed minus on my Peavey mixer. Most excellent.

I love this vid, which I just watched at a coffee shop! I cannot wait to get home and adapt the procedures for use with my Behringer Q802USB 8-Channel mixer, which has a slightly different configuration. Its AUX knobs are labeled FX and it has a separate aux section as well, but it is essentially identical to your mixer with regard to the mix-minus functionality, methinks. Having viewed the vid I'm now reading the post itself. Great stuff, man. Thank you for your creation efforts.

What I found is that most of the folks who have tutorials take for granted that folks like me know what the heck they are talking about!!! I have a zedi 8 from allan heath but your video completely clears things up and I can see what needs to happen! THANK YOU! I actually found your video bc someone with a zedi 10 linked your video! I don't see aux buttons on my mixer so i have to figure out what the substitute it. But I now understand what needs to happen! THANK YOUUUUUU!

Thanks, Margaret!! It makes me so happy to get real feedback that this video did what I wanted it to do...make this process understandable! At the time, I thought I may have made it too flashy to get the points across. Make sure you also see the full write up thepodcastersstudio.com/mixminus with images and more details that I continue to update to make it more understandable. I just went and looked at the ZEDi-8 and the bad news is it doesn't have an auxiliary channel:( However, depending on what you are trying to do, you might still be able to use the mixer. What setup are you trying to achieve?

Hi Ray! A mix minus. I am relaunching my podcast and trying a different setup. I will be recording video and sound via Skype and call recorder.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 7 жыл бұрын
You might be in luck. It's possible that that mixer will allow you to bring audio into the mixer from the computer via USB and that same audio will not go back out to the computer. Effectively giving you a mix-minus without an aux channel. You'll have to do some testing and see if it will work with someone else on Skype. Try the different routing options for the USB that are on the mixer so that the person on Skype does not hear themselves back, creating a feedback loop. Let me know how it goes!

I used my audio board, purchased for the videos I'm producing of a new nonprofit or Caregivers and their Care Partners, and it was suggested to me that I include in our range of services, not just full video, but podcasting as well. Turns out he equipment I already have is more than ample to do so... need to choose a host/upload source but -- WOW -- thanks again!

This is the most clear and easy-to-understand explanation yet of what the term 'Mix/Minus' actually means. I'm looking at a Rupert Neve 5059 mixer as my son is in the recording business so I'm not sure if this can be configured for Skype use. I plan to get in and out of my Mac using a Lynx Hilo ADC. Anyway, thanks for a very helpful video and hands-on demo.

Thanks Daniel! Nice last name;) I haven;t really worked with a rack mounted mixer before. That mixer, the Rupert Neve 5059, doesn't look like it has Aux sends on it so you could not do a mix-minus.
@DanielOrtegoUSA
@DanielOrtegoUSA 10 жыл бұрын
That's what I thought but after talking with the rep over at Rupert Neve it's doable. Frankly, if it is workable then I don't know how you would do it either. I just decided to go with a Behringer that's similar to your rig and be done with it. If I don't pod-fade then I may purchase a nicer rig down the road.

First off, great video! Seriously, I'm definitely new to all this and though I had felt like I was able to piece together the whole mix-minus issue (using a number of sources), your video made everything crystal clear. That said, I do have a question for you: I want (and have) the same exact setup as you have in this video, but I also want to add the ability to stream to mixlr so I can broadcast live as well as record the podcast; so can I do that as well through only using one computer or do I have to use a second on to accomplish this? (It might also be helpful to mention here that my Alesis mixer has a USB connection, which I had used to connect to my pc for recording before I bought my external audio recorder.) Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

This is a very helpful video. Thank you for making it. For recording, does using a mixer with USB-out have any advantages over the RCA-out connection you're using?

Thanks for all the help! You are pretty good at explaining all this stuff so thank you for that. Just out of curiosity though is it possible to record a podcast this way without a portable recorder?? Wanted to see if I could start a podcast before I got the cash to buy one of those. Thanks again!

Ray, Fantastic explanation. I bought the Zoom LiveTrak L12 How do i mix-minus with iPhone8 I understand, how to get the voice from my cell to the L12 but how do i get it back to the iPhone8, so they can hear? I think its equipment im missing to make it work cause this L12 seems to do it all. Im connecting my laptop with your iMic idea = works and im going to connect my iPhone8 = not. All at the same time. 1 host (+) 2 remote guest Thanks again for your time. Always great work.

Joe, for connecting a phone, the iRig2 is going to be your best option podhelp.me/iRig2Zon, here's how kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9ihg8yJ1cnIYX0.html and an update kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM-Aks5mmqyphac.html they do have a digital version amzn.to/2ToaoCO, I haven't tested it yet but it's the same idea however it costs a lot more although it's on sale at the time I'm posting this (affiliate) link.

Thanks for this, Ray! Finally a video that fully explains this. Others I've seen assume too much, but since I am a beginner, I needed every bit explained. I plan on doing something similar with a Scarlett 6i6 Audio Interface and an iRig 2 using my iPhone to record phone calls during podcast. The MixControl software that's included should allow me to set a separate mix for the caller where I can leave out their voice as an output, so they hear everything but their own voice. Thoughts?

+Charles Schlaudraff sounds right re: the software but I haven't messed with it yet. Did it work?? This is also a full post at thepodcastersstudio.com/mixminus with write up and images.

Yes, it works. Using an iRig2, the switch has to be set to FX and you have to use the out to amplifier jack (not the headphones jack)--at least that's how I got it to work.

One of the best descriptions on how to do Mix Minus - Thank you, Ray. I have a discontinued mixer (Tascam 644) too. My iMac only has 1 input jack (for headphones). What cable would I use to get audio from computer into the mixer? Thank you.

Sorry for the late response, did you get this figured out? You can use one of these via USB to give you the two connections (in/out) podhelp.me/iMicV2BH

Hey I’m having trouble I have the Behringer I think 1804usb mixed 8 channel. Being USB do I still have to worry about sending the signal back to my computer or does all do that through the USB interface built in to the mixer. Thanks in advance your videos have helped but I’m still confused. Trying to make my Podcast more legit spent all this money and I have can’t hook everything up 🤯😂😂

Great video, thanks for making it all so clear! Only question is I have a USB mixer (Behringer X1024USB), so can I skip the Griffin mic line in adapter and just select the USB Audio Codec as input in Hangouts to send in the audio to everyone else?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 7 жыл бұрын
If you are just trying to send your audio to the Hangouts then yes. Otherwise if you are trying to bring back the other people from Hangouts into your mixer then most likely not since it will create a loop. Unless your mixer doesn't actually send the audio back that it receives. The best thing to do would be to test it out. If the people on the Hangout are hearing themselves back like in a echo then it will not work. Otherwise you're good;)

Hahah wow man it’s weird cause I’m in AM radio and I use the Aux channels for the announcer and statisticians head phones and because AM broadcasts are mono I can use channel “7-8” in your case plugged only to the right channel from the Access and that creates the mix minus for me. Thanks for showing me something I didn’t know I knew 😎

Hi ray, love the video! So easy to understand. I do have one question, I have a usb connection on my mackie profx8 mixer that goes to my MacBook, can I use that instead of a cord and imic for Skype?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jon. Technically you can't. The reason for the cables is because USB doesn't work because you can't choose what goes out the USB. So everything pretty goes out. Therefore your caller will hear themselves. If all you need to do is have the caller hear you then yes you can use USB. But if you need to bring the caller into the mixer then you need this setup so they won't get their channel back. Some software like Skype has echo cancellation and in some cases this will prevent the issue but it's not really the proper setup as it might not work and isn't meant for that purpose. You also don't need an iMic if you have a 3.5mm mic input already.

This makes it look soooooo simple, I will test with my setup asap. I do have one important question. I'm trying to do basically what you demonstrated, but in a hybrid Zoom setup. I have in person PA Speakers, as well as online Zoom participants that I would like to fully include. So far, I have not been able to deliver a decent quality audio to my Zoom people. Sound in the live room is ok. I'm using a Behringer 1204 USB mixer, 4 wireless mikes and a laptop running Zoom. It's my very first time ever using a mixer. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Ok, I'm sure I'm overthinking this, but a touch of clarification would be appreciated. First let me explain my equipment. I am using the Behringer Xenyx 802 and calling into a live broadcast through Vsee (similar to that of Skype). So I would set up my mic via the XLR per normal and adjust levels appropriately. From there, I would go from PC Out to Line In (5/6) on my 802. This is where I get a bit fuzzy.. I would then go from my FX Send to my PC In and set my Vsee/Skype mic to pull from the PC In. Is there a way to hear the callers without the use of headphones? The reason being, there are two people on my side that need to be able to hear, preferably without headphones or would that defeat the whole purpose as the sound from the speakers would still feed back into the mic?
