This tutorial covers setting up a Synology NAS for the very first time in the New DSM7! This covers; adding in your hard drives for the first time, selecting a RAID level, setting up quick connect, creating a storage pool and first shared folder, and finally mounting the Synology over SMB.
Synology's Disk Station Manager (DSM) is an amazing web interface however it can be slightly confusing setting up for the very first time. This tutorial contains everything that you need to setup a Synology NAS for the first time!

I have just bought a DS1522+ to replace my ageing DS415Play. The DS415Play has been setup in a kind of sketchy way for years. I didn't want to repeat my old mistakes. I have watched many a KZfaq tutorial on setting up DSM 7 but keep coming back to this one. It has been a companion on my TV as I set things up via my laptop. Basic setup is now done and my shared folders make a lot more sense. Now I have the fun of transferring 15TB of data from my old NAS to the new NAS. Thank you for making this tutorial and many of your other videos, I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of you knowledge and interesting easy to understand videos

Thank you so much for making this tutorial. The way you present is both very analytical and easy to follow. Based on your channel I purchased a DS1621+ with updated RAM, 2 x NVMe SSDs and a 10 GBe card. Thanks again for taking the time and putting the effort to create content of such a high quality!

Just bought the DS1821+ and I'm absolutely impressed by the DS itself and your PHENOMENAL content about it. Gone through a lot of your videos; absolutely top notch. Really, thanks man! My backup workflow literally went from catastrophic/chaotic to "never have to think about backups anymore" in like a weekend. Lucky me, I never had a major data loss, and now I'm safe! Synology NAS definitely worth every penny.

Perfect timing as my DS220+ will arrive this weekend and I am a 73 year old retiree who loves tech but tech does not always love me. I will need to start up very basic with initial goals to have a reliable backup and provide remote access as retirement allows more travel. Currently we have 2 PC's (mine, wife) that sync with 3 different OneDrive accounts (3rd OneDrive is necessary due to 1tb space limit). Now to my first concern and that is naming/setting up folders. I would like to stay consistent with the OneDrive pattern, having a folder for myself that mirrors 1 of the OneDrive, 1 for the wife (on a separate PC, syncing with her OneDrive account) and then a 3rd MUSIC folder that is syncing with a 3rd OneDrive account. This folder gets very little activity now due to streaming services but have spent years collecting and want to protect. Anyway, suggestions on naming/setting up to get the very basics started and the OneDrive accounts will continue to work. May sync OneDrives from NAS at some point but I need to move slowing as I learn this NAS stuff. Your vids are great and you will be a big part of my growth.

I guess the next video should be setting up and configuring a PLEX server on DSM 7. The only "updated" tutorial I've been able to find involved using using Docker and that seemed like adding an extra unnecessary layer. All the other tutorials I've been able to find were how to migrate an existing PLEX server from DSM 6 to DSM 7.

Thanks Will! This is my first video of yours that I have watched. I have had a home Synology DS1515+ that I have not used for 2 yrs (too complicated to tackle in spare time). Just upgraded to 7 and watched the Synology setup 7 vid. I then watched your video and really appreciated the extra info (home vs homes folder, set up snapshots etc). Im about to watch synology home setup part 2. My next step is to set up the file, photo, movie and iOS apps, eventually surveillance. My eventual goal is to have the the big bucket o music, photos and movies for household and net sharing/steaming. My question: for just me and my wife at home is its still recommended to make a shared "family" folder? Thanks again, look forward to more synology vids

@@Jonathan-qc1ff SMR is not ideal for frequent read/write access, I think. I believe most WD Reds have CMR nowadays, at least my WD Reds I just ordered are CMR. But Synology has a lot of software which optimises hard drives and makes SMR drives more durable so don't worry too much about it.

@@bazcurtis178 Hi Michael, I had the same situation. I used my old drives with the idea of replacing them with the Recommended higher reliability drives. I made one big mistake. My existing drives were 6G. I was hoping to convert to bigger drives during the transition. I made the mistake of setting the system as RAID 5. My understanding is that I will have to basically start over if I want to use bigger drives. i was locked into 6G. I should have set up as SHR. In my case I will start replacing the existing drives, but I will buy 6G. Too painful to start over. Moving away from Drobo was a good move for me. I use a Mac. Every time the operating system was updated Drobo compatibility was delayed by months. Drobo always gated OS updates.

Good video core t way to setup a Synology nas for new people it's very good you covered mostly all the basic stuff only part I say you missed was setting up smart extended disk scan schedule that runs 5 days before the the data scrub runs, as that's used for pre disk fail detection (I would run a manual first time smart extended scan early as well as that tests all disk sectors that plus the raid first time sync is a good test) and maybe warn users about using smr disks in raid as well is a bad idea

Important note about BTRFS file system. It is not supported on all their models. In the past they broke user data with their regional restrictions when they allowed it on some models but then took it away via update. So be very careful.

i like your videos. Just a quick question. What would be the best solution/scenario (bought my self an DS1522+ for backing up all our photo moments. ) 1. I want that my wife and I have access to all our pictures but when adding for example extra family members to the group, that they do not see those pictures. But will have their own space where they can store stuff,
