Why Would You Want a Line Array?
Let’s explore the purpose to our Line Array approach because, let’s face it, if you haven’t heard one you might well think this is just about pure power and ludicrous mode output. While you wouldn’t be wrong about their potential for massive output the true reason for owning a REL Line Array has more to do with all the amazingly tactile qualities the highest end music and film sound systems aspire to.
The sound quality, visual presentation and sophisticated forms these deliver elevates merely very good systems to a whole different and better-in-every-way delivery of music and film sound.
What can be even more rewarding than buying a line array, is building one over time. By starting with just one or two RELs, and adding additional subwoofers as funds permit, you can better understand what each unit in the line array brings out in your system. You’ll be amazed at every step of the journey.
Until one experiences a REL Line Array it is hard to understand the profound leap from mundane to edge of the art these afford.

Thanks, for making this line array setup video. I unboxed my S510s a couple of months ago, but have been a little apprehensive to setting them up. Tech support explained to me the setup steps, but seeing it done for me is much better. You filled in some of the fine points of the process and what to listen for that were still a little nebulous.

I fully share all of this configuration! this is the best setup in the world to get huge bass by multiplying the subwoofers! no disfration from loudspeakers to loudspeakers and multiplication of the power per line;) I have been using this principle for 10 years with 8 passive subwoofers independent of each other (4 left + 4 right) without any speaker + amplifier filter external qsc4050hd, the problem encountered was starting to complicate because the sampling by micro analysis I situate the volume of the 4 subwoofers at too large a volume (-18 db)! So I managed to find the secret by analyzing a single subwoofer without connecting the others (4 ohms) and then connecting the other 3 (1 ohm! 4: 4 = 1 ohm) And it works it's absolutely monster ! but you can't do a one-line configuration in one pass ... great, beautifully explanatory video;) first: Obligation to configure only one subwoofer by the measurement microphone second: plug all others in uplink Result: The first subwoofer is configured in perfect micro analysis under its 4 ohm impedance and the electrical principle of connecting the other subwoofers thereafter generates a division by 2 of the Ohms value to the next subwoofer therefore in a configuration of 3 subwoofers we get 1.33 ohms from the entire subwoofer line and therefore a triple multiplication of the power delivered by the power amplifier with a basic analysis 🏅 The huge advantage of its REL subwoofers which has an LFE xlr input and an LFE xlr output is that you can adjust only one subwoofer by the analysis microphone of the preamplifier without connecting the others and connect the other 2 by the LFE xlr output then on the same principle mentioned above but as a separate power amplifier + passive subwoofer it works on the same technical principle but as an integrated amplifier in the subwoofer;) 👍

I have a pair of G1 MK2s. Just this single pair for now though I plan on building the array when I have a little more space. When John sets the volume and crossover points on the S510s what does that correspond to on the G1? We don't have the click settings but that screen in the front. I am assuming 30hz for crossover and maybe 15-20 for volume? I have pretty big front speakers and my volume is currently set nearer to 25 than 15. Thank you.

I have a pair of s510’s, no 6 pack yet. I set them up using sneakers as the first anchor set in this video. My mains are set perfectly with proper rake angle. However, they have adjustable spikes. The REL’s do not and sit directly on a carpeted floor. The problem with this is that my speakers are perfectly leveled, but my subs are not and are clearly leaning forward compared to the mains due to issues with the floor. Should I add shims under the foot rails to make the s510’s in perfect vertical alignment with the mains? This would wind up decoupling the subs with the flor and a latter amount of the rails would no longer be touching the floor. Any advice?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. If the floor in your room is not perfectly level, then thin wooden shims can be used to balance the subwoofer on the floor. In our experience wooden shims are thin and solid enough to still allow the subwoofer to be coupled to the floor.

I’m curious after seeing this setup, which essentially fees like two tower speakers in front of the room. With the Line Array Setup, is the impact of “room mode” in low frequency space, which seems to necessitate subwoofers generally, not relevant? If so, would one be able to achieve overall better sonic performance with a true full range speaker with +/- 3db @ 20-25Hz, provided they are powered adequately for the room?
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics Жыл бұрын
Thank you for reaching out. Using a full six-subwoofer line array does help to resolve some low-frequency room acoustics issues, and can lead to a more balanced distribution of low-frequency energy in the room. While a pair of main loudspeakers that can truly reach down to 20Hz with authority and strong dynamics would be ideal, in practice there are very few speakers that can achieve this in a typical listening room, and these types of speakers require significant amplification to be able to produce these sub-bass frequencies, let alone do so with precision and detail in the sub-bass. By contrast, using an appropriate subwoofer paired with your main loudspeakers will produce higher quality sub-bass, and typically for less cost than a truly full-range speaker and power amp that can adequately drive them.

The description of the resonant bass drum head having a delayed and perceivable attack is something that might need another examination because that’s not what happens. I’m an audiophile so I pay attention to, and appreciate sound quality. I’ve also been a serious drummer my entire life, and have been professional full-time for over half my life (I’m middle aged now). I’ve played over 6,000 live shows all over the world, plus studio work both commercially and also engineering the sessions myself in my own studio. I’ve played concert bass drums in orchestras as well as marching bass drums, and to this day I’ve been listening to a large (40”+) bass drum played practically every night for the last 23 years. I’ve heard it acoustically, recorded, and close mic’d with an in-ear monitor mix literally thousands of times. There is no second transient. It doesn’t do that, at any dynamic level. NO drum does that. Perhaps you’re hearing a room reflection as the “second transient” because that’s much more likely since it would take a given distance to hear any type of latency. Either way, I’d like to know the recording you reference when you hear this, the actual time mark too if possible. I’m always willing to learn something new, but as of right now this seems like you’re describing something else. Thanks for making the video.

I started with a pair and now own a full REL G1 MkII 6-pack, (main speakers are Dynaudio Evidence Masters with Boulder 2000 series electronics and Transparent Opus Gen-5 cabling) and my favorite track to demo it is "Chimes" by Bruce Stark. There is basically "nothing" in the song (it's a Bösendorfer piano and, well, chimes!) anyone initially identifies with needing "sub-bass", but when you kick the line arrays on you literally get an ENTIRE hidden layer of details, spatial cues, harmonics and decay from the instruments and the "room" the recording was done in that just makes everyone's jaw drop whenever I do it...And yes, I can just about knock my house off it's foundation on EDM and techno music, lol, but that's really the "lowest hanging fruit" with the 6-pack's capabilities. I tell everyone you just have to experience the REL line array to "truly" understand it but once you do it'll damn near impossible to go back to just a pair of subs, lol.

What happens if you setup an array with the exact same settings? Do all three basically couple to each other and act as one giant sub? And then what does auddessey room correction do if there are two sub outs? Is it basically trying to correct whatever sub is connected to the reciever, making it out of sync with the other two subs? Or does using the xlr cable between subs ensure the same signal from the processor is repeated to each sub?

When stacking REL subwoofers to form a line array, each subwoofer should be the same matching model. This helps to ensure that the complete stack is sonically coherent from top to bottom, and that the speed of each subwoofer is a perfect match. In addition, only select models in our lineup are designed to be safely stacked, these being the S/510, S/812, Carbon Special, HT/1508, G1 Mk.II, and No.25.

The explanation of line array setup is very helpful. I am certainly no expert, but curious about the following. 1. Is the distance of a driver from the floor important? If so, why? I note a stack of 15 inch woofers is much higher than 10 inch woofers. 2. If the mid level sub is the fulcrum, why not dial that in first? It will roll off at a higher frequency than the bottom sub, therefore the bottom sub crossover would be set to blend with the mid level sub roll off. 3. Could the balance and gain of the mid and high bass be achieved from 1 sub using DSP PEQ rather than a sub for each frequency band? 4. Wouldn't the bass be cleaner with the subs placed close to the wall behind to minimise blurring from sound reflecting off the wall? DSP could be used to delay the mains to ensure impulse synchronisation/phase. 5. Is there interference (cancellations etc) between the drivers in an array? 6. If bass is omni directional, why is toe in relevant? 7. With all subs reproducing almost equal bass frequency bandwidth but in difeents ways (roll off, crosover, gain), wouldn't the overall response feature peaks rather than be than flat? Cheers

It is possible that we will add this ability in the future, though at this time we do not recommend stacking a main loudspeaker on top of a two-subwoofer line array stack. This is in part due to the risk of damaging the speakers due to them falling off of the subwoofer stack, and also because the ideal location for the main loudspeakers will oftentimes not be the same spot that the subwoofers are placed.

Hi Rel, I was wondering if your next Generation HT line subwoofers going to go lower in frequencies, and also would you consider using dsp just for the ultra low frequencies only. For example down to 20-22 hz analogue and below 20 hz DSP. Best of both worlds. I am sure if you did use DSP you would be using it more effectively than anyone else.
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
At this time we do not have any information about potential future generations of our Serie HT subwoofers, though it is possible that they will reach deeper than the current models. That being said, at this time we do not have any plans for including DSP in any of our subwoofer models. In our experience DSP can add additional latency to the subwoofer's output, which can negatively impact the subwoofer's ability to blend with your main loudspeakers.

@@RELAcoustics cheers for the reply. When it's connected via the high level connection, that would mean that my speakers run in full range though right? So bass would be coming from my floor standers AND the rel sub? I've got Focal Kanta 2's, and I play 2 channel music through an integrated Rotel S14 amplifier. I'm considering buying the two Rel s812 subwoofers. And I want to confirm that in a 2.2 set up, Rel's recommendation is that I would still run my Kanta's in full range, and run the 2 Rel subs in stereo and have bass coming from the Kantas as well?

@@rasta.j Thank you for reaching out. When connecting REL subwoofers using the High Level input it is essential to set the corresponding main speaker channels to "full-range" or "large" output, so that both the main loudspeakers and the subwoofer receive a full-range signal with no filtering applied. The subwoofer's Crossover control will then be tuned by-ear to just below where the main loudspeakers naturally roll-off in their own low-frequency extension in your room. When tuned well there will be minimal overlap between the output of the subwoofer and that of your main loudspeakers.

This method applicable to a dual subs set up?

Thank you for reaching out. The instructions outlined in the beginning of this video (for the first/bottom two subwoofers in the line array) will also apply when setting up a stereo pair of subwoofers.

If you are not able to use "Cosmo...Old Friend" from the Sneakers soundtrack in your system, then any recording that you are familiar with that has deep and consistent sub-bass impulses will work well. Ideally the recording should be primarily acoustics instruments, rather than electronic music with synthesized sub-bass, since your ears and brain will have a better frame of reference for what sounds "correct" in terms of subwoofer tuning settings.

So is this a 5 way configuration
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
In a sense the line array setup shown in this video does act as a five-way speaker configuration, though it does function differently compared to a true five-way main loudspeaker.

Tried that Sneakers track…what the hell? What little bass is in that track is sporadic and way in the background, played through dual T5i REL subs already well set up. Puzzled. Maybe someone csn suggest a track with a solo bass line played low and clear

Greetings, Besides safety issues, why not add another pair of subwoofers and make it an 8-pack? If bass moves vertically, as John has stated in previous videos, why not add a fourth subwoofer if one desires so? Thank you.
@RELAcoustics
@RELAcoustics 2 жыл бұрын
Adding a fourth pair of subwoofers to your line array can work well in significantly tall listening rooms, though in the majority of listening rooms a six-subwoofer line array offers the best possible performance.

Can you do a setup with 1 und 2 subs in a room, too? A real setup would be nice. Those subs are not connected...i am rly struggling to setup my new s/812. Either I have badass base but it hurts my ears over time or my ears are ok but i lose the badass experience...

Thank you for reaching out. We will forward this feedback to our marketing team for consideration with future videos, though in the meantime the instructions outlined at the beginning of the video for the bottom two subwoofers will be the same as what should be done for a single or stereo pair of subs. If you have any specific questions about subwoofer tuning for your system, then feel free to write in to contactus@rel.net and we will be happy to assist.

There´s only one thing that´s stopping me buying a 6 pack, having absolute perfect pitch i want to hear EVERY single bass note. I´m looking at Velodyne DDplus series where i can fine tune with DSP so that every single bass note can be tuned to my listening position . My listening room is full treated. How can you fine tune with DSP or perfect pitch?

I would not recommend Velodyne any longer. At one time, they were the undisputed leader in home audio subwoofers... and that lasted 15yrs or so. Now, their focus is elsewhere, their sub tech is dated, their offerings way overpriced, and most importantly their service customer support is poor. I've owned multiple Velodyne subs since early 90's. Unfortunately, it's simply not the way to go any longer. You'd be much better off with JTR, Rythmik, of course Rel. Instead of feature set (dsp, room optimization), focus on core performance... ie., low distortion, high output. DSP, and system optimization tuning etc, is constantly evolving, and ideally addressed outboard of the sub.

Maybe if you used DSP with adjustable time delay, you wouldn't have to do all this physical moving around nonsense

Or ideally implement both, ie., physical optimization first, then further tune via DSP.

@@FOH3663yup. Basically need dedicated six channel minidsp hd like unit, self calibration, of levels, phase and then summed subwoofer frequency response then EQ Doesn't solve the issue with avr setup that would only be for hifi. Where you send subs full range. Avr setup would need different settings. But set speakers to large? Bye bye drivers . Bad bad advice.

@@user-gf7kj5vj3p Right ... I was simply pointing out it's best to do it all; - physically move them around to optimize the best loading/coupling - plus pull down resonant energy peaks via EQ'ing, and manipulate the time domain For various reasons, all too often enthusiasts don't move subs around, ie., exploring and measuring the best sub location. Huge amounts of headroom is gained by finding the ideal spot. The video is ridiculous.

Since the crossover frequencies are not the same for the individual subs, the phase is also different between them. This entire setting up meter long wavelength devices a millimeter back and forth seems nonsensical.
@RELAcoustics

In our experience, even though the Crossover settings will be slightly different between each subwoofer in the stack, the phase switch settings will remain the same for the three subwoofers in each stack.

In the video there is no signal being produced by the subwoofer line array or the main loudspeakers, since it is extremely difficult to accurately record the output of a full-range stereo system to where you can hear the changes to the crossover and level settings in a KZfaq video. In the video, John is using his experience setting up countless subwoofer line arrays to show you what you should be listening for and how you should go about tuning a line array of REL subwoofers.
