In this video, we show and discuss the unboxing and initial setup of the Anytone D878 UV II Plus. The 878 series are all Part 90 certified commercial radios that support the GMRS repeater frequencies needed to operate on North Georgia GMRS Network. It is a popular HT (handy talkie) choice with our members.
A brief unboxing of the Anytone D878 UV II Plus is shown first. It includes the radio, battery, programming cable (USB to Kenwood K1 type plug) belt clip, a Bluetooth Push to Talk button, charging cable for the BT PTT button, antenna, charging dock, and the power supply for the dock.
Next, we go into the detailed initial setup. We start by using Anytone Options software (AT Options) to set the correct bands. We need Band 0 (Mode 0) to remain Part 90 compliant and to enable wideband, which is needed for GMRS.
We then jump into the Anytone CPS (computer programming software) and disable the keypad lock. From there, we’re able to verify the firmware running on the radio.
Next, we work through creating and setting up a sample GMRS code plug for the radio to get you on the air. It’s always a good practice to save the factory code plug and settings before you make any changes to create your new code plug.
Reminder: add a dummy Radio ID number in the “Digital” section, since this technically a DMR radio and the CPS requires a value for this field. We use 1234567 in this demo.
Many thanks to our friends at Chatt Radio in Chattanooga, Tennessee for loaning us the radio used in this demonstration. Chatt Radio is a great source for all your amateur and ham radio, as well as GMRS radio, emergency weather radio, antenna, coax, and accessory needs.

Okay first off this is fantastic. I mean really. It is so appreciated. I purchased this radio to get into the ham biz so to speak. I'm starting with GMRS. All I can say is thank you. Ham's have a real hard time recruiting into ham. I think it's because they don't have a way to ease people into the biz. Using a GMRS with the family is a wonderful start. This video is a treasure thank you!

Thanks, this video really helped a lot. Bridgecom videos don’t talk about “At options” and it definitely required that part or I would have been screwed. It wouldn’t allow me to put things in wideband, only in narrow band. Again, thank you McDonough 25

Considering a D578Pro for UHF/VHF/GMRS. Anytone's triband antenna only covers UHF Rx (400 - 480 MHz) Tx (420 - 450 MHz). What mobile antenna do you all use to cover UHF/VHF/GMRS? Also, where can I buy a D578 Pro? I can only find AT D578 Plus, which does not appear to be capable of UHF/VHF/GMRS. Thanks for the help!

On line 44-55 which are the repeaters should the transmit and receive frequencies be different? ie repeater 1 which is your line 44 should the frequencies be 462.5500/467.5500 for Rx and Tx?

I always put the repeater inputs in the code plugs for listening purposes. This does two things, by listening to the input you can see who is within range of you for simplex, and you can also switch to that and listen if there is a scenario where both parties are very close to each other. By listening on the input side of the repeater you won’t get desense and will hear the transmission.

I'm still not clear on how to make this radio work on GMRS. I have the same radio and it seems that GMRS is out of band. Is there a part in this video that addresses how to 'fix' that? Thank you. Great video, though, very thorough.

Yes sir that’s the first thing we address in the video is changing to band to allow for gmrs use. That is literally the very first thing we do after the unboxing.

Would we use AT_Options first to set to Radio 0, then read from radio and use the correct CPS version to finish programming channels?
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1 8 ай бұрын
I use anytone options to verify that it is in fact in band mode zero. And "sometimes" you will get lucky, and the firmware version will be listed there when you read from the radio. After that yes everything will be done from the CPS as long as you have the matching CPS version to match the firmware version in the radio. In most cases you won't have to change the mode as it will be from the factory in Mode 0 anyways. Also be sure before you start building out your code plug in the CPS that the CPS is also in mode 0.
@strongbad7745
@strongbad7745 8 ай бұрын
I think my issue before was having both AT options and CPS open at the same time. My first Anytone wasn't in mode 0 but I just happened to order an extra one from Powerwerx last week so maybe I'll get lucky. I think there's a password to unlock mode 0 in the CPS software but I wasn't able to flash due to Band Error.
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1 8 ай бұрын
There is no password needed for band mode 0. Band error messages happen when the band mode that is set in the code plug does not match the band mode that is selected in the radio. You can/will also get a band mode error if you have a channel programmed in your code plug that is not within the frequency range of the band mode that is selected.

Do you have a channel spreadsheet that I can copy and paste into my channel list on the 878?
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1 8 ай бұрын
Anytones unfortunately won’t allow you to do that. You can either import a complete code plug or you have to do each individual, one channel at a time. All of the NGGMRS repeater information is on the website at NGGMRS.org. But again you can’t just copy and paste that.

Well realized I have the 878uv plus, not the 878uv II plus. I can hear ok but can’t transmit. Is it possible or was it a programming error?
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1
@NorthGeorgiaGMRSNetworkDOTorg1 4 ай бұрын
Most likely a programming error. I have a 878uv plus which is basically “generation 1” and it works just fine. “UV ii” is just the newest model. Go back through and check your band mode, also check your offsets, tones, and “ptt prohibit” settings.

I wonder if you can answer me this question ...when scanning channels when the radio gets activity on a certain channel, (somebody starts talking) how do you lock in on that channel?... because pressing the PTT button only send you to a different channel that when you first started scanning ...it does not lock in on the channel with activity. It is so frustrating, there's a few people on KZfaq that have asked the same question. I've asked to BRIDGEcom numerous times they ignore my question probably because I'm not a member of their program .. I wonder if you have an answer. Thanks

I don't care because I'm not the radio police, but some people may not want to use this for GMRS (personal decision). You're giving out bad information here. I think maybe you have part 90 and part 95 confused. Yes, this is a part 90 radio, meaning it is legal to use as a business radio. It has no part 95 certification, therefore is not legal to use on GMRS. I could care less what you use your radio for, but I don't want anyone to be misinformed.
