Another nice video.... I've a mobile V/UHF in my LR2 which was simple to install but my preferred mobile setup: FT3D on my motorcycle! Radio mounted to the bars using a generic phone holder, power comes from the Yaesu 12V adaptor (Empty AA battery adaptor installed to save constant charge of standard battery), Mic/Tels via bluetooth to my helmet kit. Antenna is a Nagoya on Nagoya mount attached to the rear grab bar and bonded to the frame. Gets out a treat!!

To the Landrover guy: buy some N52 grade large supermagnets. Put your magnetic antenna on the roof, nor slip the supermagnets under the headliner, and as they align in place, mark the locations then epoxy them there. Beware, supermagnets can "jump" and seriously bite your flesh if you give them a chance too. Works on fiberglass roofs too. Use a big magmount (5-6") and don't skimp on the N52 magnets.

Direct to the battery - and fuse it appropriately with a blade type fuse in a good waterproof fuse holder. I do NOT fuse negative or run it directly to the battery - which is what a lot of old timers recommend "because the radio manual says so"... but the standard to take both leads directly to the battery are archaic, based in a time when not all vehicles (some big trucks) were negative ground, and most radios were floating ground. Those days are long gone. Their logic is usually "The manufacturers recommend this way, and they must have a reason" - yes, they do have a reason ... because nobody's rethought that "best practice" in the last 50 years and the problems that can arise from it are rare enough that it's not worth it for them to pay to reassess the situation. I run + directly to the battery or the positive connection point on the vehicle for newer vehicles, or cars with batteries in weird places - the + "jump point" is where you should hook up to in those cars, and the neg to the vehicles common ground point where all grounds come together.

+1 for the Lido mount. Best damn thing for cell phones or radio heads! I use two. 3M makes an "industrial" clear "velcro" that holds toll passes on superhot windshield glass, that's also great.

I have done several mobile installs for CW mobile. As far as hidden antenna car is black and 2M antenna Diamond I spray paint black. Yes, already black but it will get weathered and looks great. Hard to see antenna as it matches car paint. Mounting head unit to front seat post best option. I have removed units and no one can tell I have had a ham radio in the car. Drill no holes, no damage to vehicle. Have fun with radios.

L cut h cut, slope. Lowpass and highpass filters, slope of filter being the db/octave it attenuates the signal. Most vehicles can ground anywhere, if you have the vehicle properly grounded and it is always preferable to go to the frame with as short of a cable as possible. And if you've properly RF Bonded your entire vehicle as you should, you'll have no issues.

Use a 3/4" Greenlee die to cut the hole in the roof. It will seal up with a rubber grommet provided. Pulling the headliner loose you will be able to route your coax to the trim and then behind the trim to the floor. You can go under the carpet by lifting the foot sill and run the coax under the carpet to under the dash near where the radio is mounted.

In the CB days I had a mount that would attach to the radio with a piece of coax that screwed into the radio. The mount that attached to the vehicle had a cable with a SO239 and power wires to splice the factory wires to. They may be a little hard to find but they were easy to find back in the CB days. They had extra wires so you could hook the external speaker to and plug it into the radio.

If you go through the firewall but can't fit the fuse holders go ahead and cut them off so you can feed the power cable through the grommet. Once it is through the firewall use heat shrink and solder the wires back together and heat shrink the joints. A larger piece can go over both wires that have had heat shrink covered the individual wires.

7.62, 5.56, 5.45, 54r, all fun. Installed an ftm400 in a tacoma. Comet antenna off the back end. Seems to work well. Head on top of dash with ram mount. Body under pass seat on a custom bracket with velcro. I do get clicking sound running audio into the truck aux. I hope this is eliminated with a dedicated speaker.

Before deciding on a do it all radio ask yourself how much VHF and UHF you do when in the vehicle. Do you tend to do more with HF while driving? Then you would do better by getting a separate dual band radio and a good HF mobile radio. That way you can monitor your local repeater if you want while operating on HF. When I was working for a living I would work HF regular going to work. My friends from work who were also hams would ask me why I wasn't on the local repeater on the way to work? I told them I was on HF. I had the Alinco HF/VHF/UHF. So I bought a lesser expensive dual band radio and ran both at the same time. That way I knew if one of my co-workers was calling me on a repeater while I was on HF. I usually monitored a net on HF and chose not to monitor only the repeater.

You know what would be the ultimate mobile radio setup? A quad-band radio like the KG-UV980P but with the remote head of the BTech 50x3... that head is a "mount to windshield" almost gps-style head with speakers built-in. If I recall correctly, the 980P can do down to 10 meters (11 really I think) and 6 meters and 2 meters and 70cm for TX. I think it can RX 7 bands, including airband. There are supposedly antennas that can work with all that, but I have to admit to being a noob still studying for my test so I don't have any experience with them yet lol. But I like the idea of having a radio like that which can be easily unlocked if you can find the software to do it (or possibly purchased directly from the factory shop already unlocked) so that it can be used as an emergency backup for other radios too. To be clear, I don't mean to use this for talking on CB or GMRS etc unless it's an emergency situation where I didn't have any of my HTs for those, but I like to have as many options as possible for communication in an emergency. I think having a radio capable of so much makes for a decent emergency backup to the radios we generally use more daily. If you're out and about when an emergency hits, it seems like a good idea to have those options in your vehicle. Sorry if you covered all this before. I only recently found your channel here and am still exploring your back catalog lol. PS - I'm pretty sure the 980P comes with the remote head extension cable and also, it's Wouxon, so it's Super-het instead of system on a chip and able to do proper, real, dual receive. Also, what do you consider to be "great features" in a radio? One of the things that is drawing me to the 980P when I can get it is the channel group scanning. I like the idea of having different bands in their own groups... like a group for GMRS scanning and a group for First responder scanning and a group of just the weather stations or the marine frequencies etc. If I'm driving the PCH (that's one of the things I miss most about living in cali lol) Then I might just want to scan the marine band to listen in on boats and stuff. If I'm driving inland, I might want to monitor both CB and GMRS for traffic info. I can't imagine I would hear anything useful down in CB land until more CBs have FM tho now that that's a thing, thank you Cobra lol.

The Little Tarheel 2 is not very heavy. it's just shy of 2 lbs with the standard whip on it, weighed on my digital kitchen scale. There are less expensive screwdrivers but many have a reputation for failure and expensive repairs. You get what you pay for. I would never try the Icom due to the huge number of complaints of failure and $270 repair bills, the Diamond only as a second choice. Icom's only positive is that it covers all bands but it requires their tuner too. ultimately there is no savings there. Buy what you like choose well and you wont have to buy it again, and again.

I failed to note the mount you were using as I was watching on mu Roku instead of the computer. Hello, silly question. Can I use a cable kit like Diamond 2D4MR, 2D5MR and others to mount directly to the roof of the car or is it just for use on brackets? I can't find anywhere in the pictures if it has a rubber seal due to leaking under the roof. It is not possible to read anywhere what the attenuation is, so I still decide between this from Diamond and T301 from Sirio where at least it provides some information. Josh, there are most states now that have expressly banned handheld mikes, no exclusion for hams, so a mobile vhf/uhf that allows a pricey bluetooth earpiece, can save you a pricey ticket. Sad, but more states are doing this to prevent distracted driving.

Mobile power problem on new cars: radio makers say go to the battery with dual fuses. Car makers say NO because there is a coulomb counter (power sensor) in one power lead at the battery, and if you bypass this, the car's power management system will not operate properly, all charging may be affected. To make things worse, VWG uses an explosive (pyrotechnic) fuse in that same location, to blow the starter and fuel pump in case the air bags deploy. So if you tap in at the coulomb sensor, beware the possible pyrotechics! It has gotten too damned complicated. Some of the alternators actually TURN OFF at highway speed if there are light loads and the battery is 12.4-12.6 volts, to reduce engine load. So there are good reasons to add a 2nd deep cycle battery, for the radio, using an Echocharget, Yandina isolator, or Hellroarer.

How about mounting a HAM antenna to a steel offroad front bumper? Would that work? Or is a magnet a better way to go on the roof?
@HamRadioCrashCourse
@HamRadioCrashCourse 3 жыл бұрын
It’s best to get it up as high as you can on the vehicle. You want the most of the radiating element above the metal of the car.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Ok. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I will look into a magnetic roof mount or possibly a hood mount option.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Assuming the ATAS has some shielding that the Tarheel might not have. Thanks. Should have elaborated 2019 Prius. Think it might have more noise than an older model. Tarheel told me a guy had a Prius and got rid of it because of the noise but nothing about grounding or bonding from Tarheel.

Does anyone know how to prevent water leaking into the car through the coax cable? 😐
@pd1jdw630
@pd1jdw630 4 жыл бұрын
furonwarrior depends on where the through hole is. If like through a grommet it normally should not leak, but you can how ever put some butyl tape in there. This stuff is also great for through the roof antenna’s to put some butyl tape between the roof top and the antenna. Just make sure the grounding is proper on the underside of the roof. Hope this helps.

You can use refrigeration sealant around the hole. It will seal very well.

JD Willemsen PD1JDW The cable goes through the door and I assume the rubber seal would keep it sealed up. It worked fine for my CB antenna coax when I had one. Maybe it enlarged it too much for this smaller coax connection. I’ll look into this tape method, thanks.

Well if it’s a grommet maybe it’s time for a new one. If it’s just the door seal. Make sure the part of the coax that’s on the outside is lower then inside. It’s better to illustrate then to tell but I hope you know what I mean.

A year after buying a handful of Baofangs and occasionally trying to understand how to program UK repeaters into them (the cable and mini CD method was a wasted day)I have decided that they are only any good for mid-range walkie-talkies in SHTF situations in my case (I have a 110+ IQ but don't have the interest to learn this stuff without a drill sergeant standing over me).
