A detailed guide to help you select and arrange the illumination of your model railroad, or diorama to make it look as awesome as it deserves to be. A good illumination is also ultra-important to get nice looking videos and photos.

Very interesting stuff. Something that also is worth considdering is the use of DMX-controlled RGB(W) fixtures. Wich are available today for very reasonable prices. It's best to use RGBW fixtures, because they have not only Red, Green and Blue to mix your colours, but also Warm white, so you can create any kind of mood that way.

Martin, great video as ever. Could you perhaps ad a diagram which depicts what you have placed where? And some pictures or short video to see what your actual set up is. TIA

A very informative video. I have learnt a lot and will be shielding my LED bulbs [same size as the old tungsten ones] as you suggest. Barry.Devon.

Very helpful video on a subject it seems few modellers seem to properly address to show off their handiwork to maximum effect. Thanks for the background info on the LED terminology and your personal experiences. It is certainly worth while experimenting on layout lighting. Perhaps worth also mentioning trying the LED combined dimmable and adjustable angled units to optimise settings. Stephen

Daylight is 5600K, fluorescent 3800K, bulbs 2800-3000K. Usually you find the value in your camera settings

Well done summary about lights, only the RGB LED for night and transition are missing. Switching to LED is on my todo list. About photo, I use one or more strobes, as they are a lot more configurable than any layout light (like change the strength and direction of the shadows).

Thank you for breaking down an important subject for model railroaders and anyone doing photo or video work. So would you recommend a soft light tube by the middle or back of the layout and a more directed led strip or spots at the front of the layout?

Thanks to explain illumination.. and thank you very much for your time and efforts to share your knowledge and experiences with us. For me.. a view drawings could be helpful on this subject.. especial when talking about different lights and angels so the shadows are right. Could you let us know what for equipment you use for the illumination of your layout. It seems they are also used in building sites or construction area where they needs lots of lighting. Thanks and greetings from the Netherlands!!
