I wish I had seen this a long time ago. I had just gotten a serger and I had no idea when to serge. It still confuses me when I use a commercial pattern. Thank you so much

Brilliant instructions, I've only had my serger a few weeks, so really helped to be shown where and when to serge, not to mention how to do the actual pocket, thank you :)

From one Kathryn to another- thanks for your video! I love side pockets and so often women's clothes don't have them. I looked at some of my dresses with pockets- they have stitching along the top of the pocket too, to keep it in place. I've also added patch pockets where possible- side pockets for my hands, tissue etc and patch pockets for my smart phone. It's too big and heavy for the side pockets. Greetings from London, England!

I made a t-shirt dress and am trying to add sideseam pockets to it using this video. I do not have a waist band to line up with. I also done have a commercial pattern I self drafted a pocket and sided it down to what was left of the t-shirt.

Catherine, would you consider taking the black skirt apart to change the back pocket to the same fabric (if you can get it?). Or have u sent that skirt to the charity shop by now?!

Catherine I found a tutorial showing a one layer topstitched pocket, however the instructions said to turn a hem up on the edges of the pocket. It seems a serged seam would be less bulky. What do you think? Would you consider a tutorial for a one layer topstitched pocket? Thank you so much for your channel! You’re a genius!

Hi Brenda, a one-layer pocket is a nice technique because it has very minimal bulk. I imagine that the person doing that tutorial was making it for people who might not have a serger, in which case a turned edge on the pocket piece would be fine. But I agree with you that a serged edge would be even better and less bulky.

Thanks so much for this tutorial!!. I understand how to sew pockets using a regular sewing machine but as you say, commercial patterns don’t show you how to do them with a serger which I prefer. I’ve watched a few serger videos and it looks like there is no way to serge without ending up with two layers of serger stitching at some point either on side seams or pocket itself. I can’t work out how ready to wear garments with pockets are sewn. I guess the only way to avoid having two layers of serger stitching would be to do some very intricate serging around all the corners in one line but this seems a bit too risky with cutting into the fabric for me....

Oh! If you want to see how the pockets in ready made garments are sewn and serged, then you need to watch this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/quCUrceQ1sjJaGg.html Thanks so much for checking out my channel. I hope you find it helpful!

Yes it does. If you've ever removed stitches and see that the thread is all wiggly, that's because it became "set" in the seam.
