To prevent bias tape from peeking out on the finished garment as this one is, turn and press so a scant bit of garment fabric is turned inside. More professional finish.

So glad to see someone on KZfaq take the pins out instead of sewing over them! (Well, until the end of your video, that is.) I remember my mother yelling at me to not sew over the pins when I was a child. I don't actually think I ever did but she was very insistent on this point. She'd say that it blunts the needles (and snaps them occasionally) and could damage the action of the machine. So when I saw so many KZfaqrs sewing straight over pins I thought- what has changed? Are there new types of needles and machines that allow for this to take place? My machine is over 20 years old, so I'm not about to start sewing over pins but, can anyone tell me what I've missed out on?
@treasurie
@treasurie 4 жыл бұрын
I don't normally sew over pins either but trying to film and sew at the same time is awkward! The camera is right on top of me and my hands have to keep out the way. Don't sew over pins as it can put the machine timing out.
@loverlyme
@loverlyme 4 жыл бұрын
@@treasurie I see your point. Trying to film, keep the visual domain clear AND sew is quite a feat. I'll continue to take my pins out when sewing. Thanks for your reply.
@keshnadonia
@keshnadonia 4 жыл бұрын
my mom says the same. I'm in the process of learning with her now and she's been sewing since forever. She learned at the age of seven. and still yells at me if i sew over the pinned needles.
@loverlyme
@loverlyme 4 жыл бұрын
This was good to see in action. I've always thought that the bias binding goes half on the inside, half on the outside. I was a bit surprised that you turned it all to the inside of the garment. I guess it really acted as a facing for this top. What's more common? Half and half over the edge? Or all turned over completely to the inside or the outside?
@treasurie
@treasurie 4 жыл бұрын
The half over is for double fold bias tape. So it is a slightly different method. I think they are equally common so it depends what look you want. This method is almost invisible while the other is good for a pop of color.

It is best not to stitch on pins. Sometimes when doing a video I forget as I'm concentrating on filming so my sewing is not the usual standard. Great observation.

For arm holes- Do you sew the bias tape on before sewing the side seams? I have seen it both ways. I am a beginner so wondering which way is best. Thank you!
@treasurie
@treasurie Жыл бұрын
Both ways work. I like to do the side seams first so I can overlap the ends of the bias. It tends to end up flatter.
