I’ve been sewing for many years but have never used faux fur in garments and this was precisely what I was looking for and not 40 minutes worth of tutorial! Thank you!

Great tutorial. few extra tips just cause. When cutting the fur, pay attention to the direction of the fluff. For strips tat are fluffy like Ginni Di demonstraded, the fluff needs to go parallel to the sort ends of the strip. when attaching, pay attention to the direction and try to have the same direction (which side of the folded strip faces out when worn) on all pieces to help with cohesion. I find Faux fur cut in this manner to be less annoying/more comfortable if the side facing your skin is where the fur points away from the seam. for a sleeker look, cut the fur parallel to the long edges of the strips. If you are doing a sleek fur look, especially for a collar try to keep the fluff pointing down - this can mean doing collars in two pieces, joined at the back to get the right weight. alternatively, point te fluff of a 'sleek' cut strip up on the costume as you attach it and the result is extra fluffy. cutting strips from scraps and indiscriminantly mixing the nap of te fabric can lead to funky results.

Great point, I automatically paid mind to the nap of the fur in all my examples but didn't think to specifically address it!

@@GinnyDi My first experience with Faux Fur I was making a plush with a pattern intended to make a cotton creature. I dutifully laid out the pattern pieces in the fabric saving layout suggested. Zero attention to the nap. Didn't notice until after I flipped it right side out and stuffed it. went to smooth the nice pettable fur and.... realized I'd made a mangy monstrosity. Lesson learned, nap matters. :)

Perfect! For cutting fur, I like using a razor on the wrong side of the fabric. That helps keep the fur in tact for any remnants so there won't be a harsh cut. Ofcourse, it doesn't matter if it's being hemmed/tucked away. For sewing on a machine, I like doing what you did as well! Sometimes afterwards I'll use a needle to "untuck" some fur that was sewn under and give it a more natural/furry line. If that makes sense?

I use a dog brush (like for getting their undercoat), especially helpful if it has a straight edge, and use it to get the fur out of the seams. Especially for something like a sideseam where more fur can get into the stitching! :)

I was actually fond of having a fur trimmed collar on my vest a few years ago but it was white fur and I died my hair blue frequently. Seeing this makes me want to do that to my vest again minus the blue hair dye. Thanks!

Thank you very much for this video! Although my hood is lined, I like the look of the unlined better, so I'm likely to use that technique instead after I've already sewn the lining in. Very helpful having both results next to each other at the end.

You don't mention that there would be a right side and a wrong side to the fur when attached. When you fold your fur, one side the pile would be going down and the other side it would be going up. So presuming you would want it be facing down on the right side, I can't see that it would look too good on the wrong side.

what foot, needle, stich , width should I use. Just have a simple 2inch precut craft fur to line the bottom of my daughters dress, no lining?
@GinnyDi
@GinnyDi Жыл бұрын
You can use a standard foot, a universal needle, and the default stitch and witch. Generally if a specific foot, needle, and/or settings are not specified, it's because they don't need to be changed. That said, if you aren't using a lining, you cannot follow this tutorial as-is. This method relies on a lining material.

Tip for cutting fur: Cut it with the fur side down! You can cut through the base fabric with less of the hair falling out.
