How To Sew Knife Pleats With A DIY Pleating Board Part 2

There are several tutorials out there for making your own pleating board. I've seen one done using wallpaper and another done with posterboard (careful scoring is done to fold these materials smoothly and evenly). For this tutorial I tried to use several of the techniques and combined them into the method that works best for me. You may find that there is a version that you like better as you try out different ideas. It all just comes down to personal preference and sewing style.

I’ve always wanted to make a pleating board! I made a quick one to do in small sections when making a huge knife pleat border for my human size costume. Doll size looks much more doable!

I would never use pencil for this. Although it might be a great idea to start with, pencil can rub off on fabric that is very light. I would use some type of marker that would be completely absorbed and not have any possibility of smudging on your fabric. Great idea. Haven’t seen this in a long time.

The pleating board takes some Practice but is a great technique

I can see that there would be some effort involved in making the pleating "board" to start with, but you could use it again and again. Would be helpful if you make a lot of garments with pleats.

I really like the idea of the permanent pleating board … I’ll have to play with that. (There’s a formal dress pattern with a very unique pleated bodice that I love, but the pleats are awful! This could really help on that one.)
