In this video I'm showing how to use the Lansky Sharpening System plus a quick overall review.
I show the differences in the Standard, the Deluxe, the Diamond and the Diamond Deluxe versions of this Lansky Sharpening System and show you how to set up and use the kit to sharpen a knife from completely blunt to razor sharp without even stropping.
The Lansky sharpener doesn't come with a strop whichever kit you decide to buy, be it the standard or deluxe, the normal or the diamond but you can sharpen your knives to razor sharp without so I show without. Lansky also sell a strop for this sharpening kit but I showed without.. plus I don't have one.
For this video I sharpen a kitchen knife that was completely blunt using the standard 5 stone deluxe kit, for my next Lansky tutorial I will sharpen a knife using my Lansky diamond sharpening kit.
Thanks for Watching! Hope you liked and enjoyed it or found it informative. Please give it a Like and Subscribe for more videos.
Cheers. Lee

I've got the same unit and really gives you the shits with the slop between the clamp and the universal stand, drill and tapped a hole in the vertical column and use 6mm screw and spring washer on the clamp and it's now a whole totally different tool, gets a real good edge much quicker and a lot less hassle, alsp puts a bit more pressure securing the knife in the clamp, give it a go, you'll be amazed at the difference it makes

It changes the whole nature of the beast, it's an easy fix, and by using a slotted screw, you use a same screwdriver as the clamp to turn the knife over, not a pain in the bum to do but makes it very rigid and no wobble, cheers from AUS

Can i ask what's the main different with stone and diamond on this lansky system? which one do you prefer ? thanks for the video .
@LeesRandomVids
@LeesRandomVids 3 жыл бұрын
Well the stone do everything the diamond do, just the diamonds do it better, they can cut harder metal faster with less wear to the stone. I prefer the diamond but the stone work fine too, I'd be happy with either. I tend to use a mix of both, I use the diamond most but finish with the stone's finest grade which is 1000 grit, the finest diamond is 600 in my kit.

Should the OIL ALWAYS be applied to the stones BEFORE sharpening the knife? Thanks.
@LeesRandomVids
@LeesRandomVids 4 жыл бұрын
Nah, it's not necessary to use it all the time with the regular hones you get in the standard kits, (you can use it if you want but all you will be doing is making a mess and wasting your oil). You use it to clean the hone when the hone starts to clog with material, shown at 15:37 This is also what Lansky recommends too. This is for the regular hones btw, not the diamond ones, the diamonds you dont use the oil, only water to clean them and if you ever buy arkansas hones then they are the ones that you need to use oil with them and keep them oiled while you are using them.

If you use your index finger on the hand on the clamp to push the rod up in the slot you can stop most of the noise and have a bit more control over the staone.
@LeesRandomVids
@LeesRandomVids 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah so the rod is pressing against the top of the hole, some people prefer that. I do the opposite, I put gentle downwards pressure on the the top too so the rod it pressing on the bottom of the hole, I prefer that rather than having the rod rubbing against your finger making it sore. But whichever people prefer is fine. 👍😄

@@LeesRandomVids Up, down.....I'm sure both work the same but in your video it sounds like the rod is just clicking around in the slot which would drive me nuts.
@LeesRandomVids
@LeesRandomVids 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah mate. While I'm on the cutting strokes it's kept on the bottom of the hole, but on the return stokes or none cutting strokes it can go wherever, it has no effect other than a sound, which doesn't bother me in the slightest. I've often thought tho that a small radial spherical plain bearing fitted on the clamp for the rod to pass though which could be made slide up and down the clamp for cutting different angles would be great as it would eliminate any slack in the hole all together. But it would also increase production costs significantly for very little, if any gain.

There's another style of clamp, too, which mostly seems to be in the kits on Amazon. It's a cast metal of some kind, tiny step at the tips but no rubbers, and the screws are a right pain in the arse to get properly tight. I've not yet managed to get it to hold knives properly secure, and it makes me wonder if Lansky have cheapened out in recent years.

I ordered about a week ago from seeing this video and been watching many videos just to learn and it seems to me like the middle is hit many times more than the tip or the heel granted when you start from the heel you hit the middle and when you start from tip to heal you hit the middle again meaning you're doing the middle twice as many times so it's important to hit the tip and heel as a point of importance since the middle will be hit from either side tip or heel. I've been drinking but this seems obvious

@LeesRandomVids

Hi. From what you described it sounds like a Sharpening Rod. You can use them out in the field when you're out camping etc instead of taking the whole kit with you, but they're not used with the system, more like instead of. Chefs tend to use them a lot too, have a look for videos using sharpening rods. The one I have with the ends is called a Mini Dog Bone sharpener, its a similar kinda thing to the sharpening rods. Was your kit brand new? I've not seen any Lansky kits with a sharpening rod included. I ask because my diamond kit was second hand from ebay and the seller was selling it with the extras you saw in mine, I cut out the explanation as felt I was just rambling. I may explain it when I get round to making a video using the diamond kit, and maybe make a quick one using the dog bone too. Hope it help.

I bought a Lansky standard set in Bass Pro in Orlando years ago and it came with a free crock (the dog bone) which I use on a daily basis. I use Lansky (taking as much time as I want to), then keep the edge honed every use by GENTLY running the 'dog bone' down each side. I also have a Spyderco Sharpmaker. @@ussocom3644 After, I tried Lansky, water stones, I decided to buy TSPROF K03 basic version + pad/the disc. An angle, I measure with my phone. I can say 'Third time's a Charm'. The sharpening system sharpens fast and sharpening is enjoyable. I bought the biggest diamond stones which the tool can handle 200x35 x10 from www.vidbrusok.ru/collection/200h35h10-mm?order=descending_price (translate into english in case you decide to buy) The site has Grain correspondence table in case you need. I cut my finger pretty hard when I sharpened my knifes so I suggest use gloves. The gloves will help prevent the cuts and keep your hands clean. Sharpening, as I mention became fast, enjoyable, and you can see result pretty fast. There is no need constantly look at the angle and doubt do I hold the right angle still. Somehow, I really doubt that even the best guys have so steady had that they can hold same angle constantly. Couple words about water stones. The work with water stones is DIRTY, have to look at the angle which is impossible to keep the exactly same angle all the time, is outdated, and there is nothing special, magical or in any way superior in my amateur opinion. This is my amateur opinion about Lansky, water stones, and TSPROF K03.

the oil should have been on that stone the entire time, its not just cleaning oil sir, its meant to both clean and lubricate the blade as the stone removes material. I've watched several reviews of people using this sharpening system and most people seem to have just bought the system and tried to teach themselves the art and science of sharpening knives. There are typically errors in most of these videos. I get that it works kind of, but your results should show you you may have some more learning to do. Why advertise as a tutorial when you're not sure you know what youre doing.

Unless of course Lansky are wrong too? lansky.com/index.php/blog/how-use-lansky-controlled-angle-sharpening-system/#.WphQVmrFJhF *Honing Oil Usage:* *Arkansas hones:* When using these, apply a few drops of the honing oil provided to the surface of the stone before sharpening. Keep Arkansas stones oiled as you work. *Standard hones (Alumina Oxide):* Do not require oiling however you will note as you sharpen, that the stones will begin to move more smoothly. This indicates pores of the stones may be clogging with filings, which reduces the effectiveness of the stone. Clean by putting a few drops of oil on the hone. The oil will lift the metal shavings off the stone’s surface where they can be wiped away with a rag. *Diamond hones:* Do not apply oil to the Lansky Diamond hones: clean diamond hones instead with water and wipe shavings away with a rag. Diamond hones should be completely dry before next usage.
