Geo performs a sharpening on a “Smiling” Straight Razor. This is one of the old school antique straight razors from his collection. This razor was made in Sheffield, England by George Wostenholm and Sons. It is a thick, hefty 6/8 blade and is in need of some TLC in the sharpening dept. Called upon to accomplish the task are the Norton 4000/8000 combination stone and the Naniwa 12,000 grit water stone. The blades are soaked with water, then round trips are performed on each with light pressure, keeping the blade flat on the stone. Next on to the Shave Nation 3 inch leather strop. Round trips are performed on the fabric side which is loaded with chromium oxide, then on to the smooth leather side. The result is a shave-ready straight razor that cuts hairs at the base and midway on the hair itself. This will bring the razor to a shave ready condition and definitely sharp enough to shave with, as will be seen in the next video! Click on "Show More" (below) to purchase Straight Razors, Sharpening Stones, Chromium Oxide, and Leather Razor Strops shown in the video or go to ShaveNation.com Let us know what you’d like to see in an upcoming Geofatboy Shave Nation video.

Hi Geo. Love your channel and your store. I recently became a repeat customer of yours and I can't say enough good things about your business. The turnaround times on orders are second to none. Your price points are excellent and, more often than not, beat out much larger competitors. I enjoy all of the information you present in each video. I also enjoy seeing razors from your personal collection. The fact that you link the products you use directly to your website has been incredibly helpful. I have a question; has any manufacturer ever produce a safety razor that takes two double edged razors? Like perhaps a razor in which the blades are stacked on top of one another? Not really looking to buy anything like that, was just curious and I know for a fact you would be the right person to ask. Either way, keep making the videos and thank you for running such a great business.

Geo, you're the man. Thank you for demonstrating to some of these guys who go crazy with this stuff that in fact all you need is a few basic things to maintain any razor. So many guys are convinced you need some extensive set of 12 stones and 4 strops that you have to meticulously go through one by one then bless it with the blood of a red Heffer at half-moon on third Sunday of the month before it's "actually sharp."

9:10 He doesn't mention it but here, where Geo wipes the blade, is actually a very important step as you don't want to contaminate the leather side with chromium oxide.

I would not know which stones to start with and 100.00 a stone is kind of pricy

he just did with barely any effort on nothing but that 8k norton. which is about equal to a 5k shapton pro. personally, I suggest you stick to naniwa super stones to make it as foolproof as possible. 3k and 12k then strop and call it a day. but. a lot of guys really like stones such as the 3k naniwa chosera. I personally would not use anything more course than that on a straight razor.

Oh, that's easier than a kitchen knife because you don't have to worry about holding at the correct angle.
@jeffhicks8428
@jeffhicks8428 8 ай бұрын
obsessing over angles is high over rated on kitchen knives as well. as long as you're hitting the edge it doesn't really matter. if you're too shallow then keep grinding till you hit the edge and congrats now you have a knife with an even more acute and keen edge than before. if you're too steep, then that's your problem but it will still get sharp. it just wont cut as well.

I keep wanting to move to straight razors from safety razors, but I think I'll start with Japanese ones with replaceable blades.

Try a cheap Turkish one first, they're lighter and a bit more forgiving👍

It's easier to use a "real" straight razor it has a totally different feel and not as squirley. Buy one shave ready and get a good strop and a fine stone and you'll be fine. I like to put electrical tape on the spine of the blade to prevent from wearing the spine down and only buy razors with minimal spine wear. Get an old Boker razor I find them very easy to sharpen. I started buying and restoring and sharpening them 11 years ago. I now have over 70 razors. I cruise ebay and look for sad (good quality) razors that need some love and save them. Sheffield razors are always a good buy like Jos. Rodgers and Wostenholm, Wade and Butcher etc.

@@markthegunplumber8376mark I do the same thing with eBay!! Lol. The only thing I would add is for your first razor you try to hone stay away f from Swedish and Japanese razors. The steel is much harder and takes longer to hone.

Geo, when you do your video of shaving with this SR, I hope you include a fool's pass (S-N on upper lip). Many SR shavers would like to see how it is done and it's a great way to test a blade's edge condition.
